ISU'S BLUMBERG CENTER DEVELOPS COMPREHENSIVE READING DISABILITIES WEB SITE
TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - More than 20 percent of elementary school children have difficulty learning to read and write, according to P.G. Aaron, professor of educational and school psychology at Indiana State University and primary author of a new Web site on reading disabilities. Aaron, a noted researcher and expert in the field, has worked with a team of educators and others from Indiana State's Blumberg Center for Interdisciplinary Studies in Special Education to develop the site. It is designed to help parents and educators gain a better understanding of reading disabilities and to provide insight into alternative methods of teaching reading. "The Web site takes a comprehensive look at reading difficulties," Aaron said. "It does not dwell much on efforts to classify children as poor readers, dyslexic readers or children with learning disabilities. Instead, the philosophy is to identify the source of the reading difficulty - regardless of the labels, such as learning disabled, slow reader, etc., that schools normally employ - and address the cause of the reading problem. Classifying children, categorizing them, and labeling them have failed to produce positive results over the years."

The School of Education began offering a new program in special education in January 2003. All teacher education students seeking a teaching license in special education will major in either elementary or secondary education and will complete the requirements for licensure in their major area. Students will also complete a series of courses for an additional license in mild interventions. Mild interventions is the new term used by the state to refer to the level of service required by school-age students with special needs. In the past, teaching licenses were given according to specific disability categories; however, future licenses will no longer specify disability categories. The special education course sequence is designed to prepare teacher education students to work with students with special needs who participate in the general education curriculum, and require mild levels of support or mild interventions to be successful. It is anticipated that teacher education students who complete this sequence of courses will work with students with learning disabilities, mild mental disabilities, emotional disabilities, and others who require mild interventions.

Background and Resume
Welcome! Allow me the opportunity to introduce myself. My name is Michael True. I am a Disability and Senior Issues Consultant. I have over 25 years of experience working with consumers, direct care providers, and program administrators. In each setting, I continuously sought to obtain and utilize the most up-to-date information for insuring quality practices and services. Working within both institutional and community-based programs, I specialized in education/skill development and long-term care of individuals with developmental disabilities, mental illnesses, and other disabeling conditions. Over the years, I have been involved in program start-ups, developing policies and procedures, creating and implementing documentation systems, and in personnel management including staff development and orientation training. In addition, I have spent much of my time working directly with consumers and their families. Tasks in these areas included: consumer assessment for program placement, skill and educational evaluations, individualized plan development, behavior management interventions, curriculum development, and direct teaching and training. I have determined accessability and adaptive equipment needs in homes, schools, adult programs, and in the community. As administrator/QMRP, I have coordinated service plan meetings and have overseen the implementation of hundreds of personal programs. I have participated in government agency auditing procedures and preformed pre-audit surveys, as well.
