Year of birth: 1938 1. Why are you running for school board director? As a former administrator, a parent, grandparent and taxpayer of the Marion Center School District, I have an interest in our educational system. I hope the decisions, I am a part of making, serve to improve the educational process in our school district. 2. What do you think needs to happen in you district to meet the NCLB goals? Because of the great strides being taken by the administration and staff, these goals are currently being met in the Marion Center School District. However because the expectations of the act are not realistic, I believe the plan will destroy itself in years to come. 3. What areas are important to emphasize so that our children grow to become healthy, responsible and productive citizens?

    Office of the Chancellor
    Chancellor Ruth J. Person, Ph.D.
In September of 1999, Ruth J. Person became the chancellor at IU Kokomo. When the new chancellor was recommended for the position following a national search, the university search committee recommended her on the basis of the breadth and depth of her experience and education; her engaging personality; and her inclusive, collaborative leadership style. Indiana University President Myles Brand concurred, noting that Person, "understands the needs of campuses that serve large populations of commuter and nontraditional students. I believe that she will be an enormously effective leader for IU Kokomo for many years to come." In her first annual State of the Campus address in January, Person outlined an ambitious process designed to move IU Kokomo in a positive direction to ensure its future as a public provider of comprehensive higher education in north central Indiana. She urged members of the campus community to take the long view and focus on the future by setting objectives and performance measures that support IU Kokomo's mission of educating area residents at bachelor's and master's degree levels. From that address came "Focus on the Future," the theme for Person's installation celebration and for Person's planning and performance-based leadership perspective.

State Action for Education Leadership Project [SAELP]
The issue… States are central players in setting policies and creating conditions necessary for successful leadership, and for preparing future leaders to perform effectively in schools and districts. Yet very few states have a comprehensive plan for improving district and school leadership. Sometimes, state policies may actually limit those efforts. The response… In 2001, The Wallace Foundation announced a three-year, $8.9 million grant to launch the State Action for Education Leadership Project (SAELP), a national consortium led by the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO) and including the National Governors Association, the National Conference of State Legislatures, the National Association of State Boards of Education, and the Education Commission of the States. Working directly with 15 selected states, SAELP will lead a national effort to ensure that laws and policies in all 50 states strengthen the capacity of superintendents and principals to improve student learning. The SAELP states are: Connecticut; Delaware; Georgia; Illinois; Indiana; Iowa; Kentucky; Massachusetts; Missouri; Montana; New Jersey; Oregon; Rhode Island; Vermont, and Virginia.
