Memory Lane Dept. - Back in April of 1995 I was working at the Internet Multicasting Service in Washington, D.C. We were experimenting with uses for this crazy new thing called the Internet, and in 1995, particularly the 'world-wide-web', using an early browser called 'Mosaic'. The boss-man at IMS, Carl Malamud, was always great about getting all the new toys to work with (and tolerating my crazy ideas for content). About that time he picked up a gizmo that really knocked me out: a digital camera. It was a solution looking for a problem because for the first time it became possible to take a photograph and get it online within just a few minutes. I decided to put my nascent HTML skills to work to try to post about an event while it was still in progress. So here's the link to: Earth Day XXV on the Mall. I interviewed representatives of several environmental groups that had tents on the Mall that day. You'll find a menu to the various pages at the bottom. Use your browser's back arrow to return to the main menu. Try not to laugh, the web was at the time a frontier wilderness.

Boarding Schools - Military Schools Discipline
There are signs that the military ethos can accomplish things not easily achieved otherwise. Military curricula are even taking hold in some public schools. In Detroit, the Charles Rogers Academy, named for a black army general, offers much the same program as a military prep school. Students of each year have different ranks, discipline is tight, and standards are high. About half the seniors attend collegean extremely impressive rate for an inner-city school. By shifting their focus from training future soldiers to preparing civic leaders, military boarding schools have made a comeback although their ranks have thinned since WWII. Of course, military boarding schools can seem more like another planet to the average teen. At Massanutten, a military boarding school, reveille is at 6 o'clock every weekday morning. Cadets are required to attend formation 45 minutes later dressed in full uniform, complete with polished boots. There, members of Alpha Company that's all the girls are scrutinized for signs of excessive grooming. Sparkle nail polish and heavy makeup are banned. Hair must be tied neatly into military buns or cut above the collar.

Alternative Schools Education
With the quality of most public schools dwindling as a result of increased enrollment and decreased funding, many parents seek alternative schools to educate their children. Effective alternatives include private schools whose focus is a military style of discipline and education. Military schools provide cadets with the traditional college prep curriculum found in public schools, but the quality of teaching often exceeds that found in public school. Since most military schools are also a boarding school, many times the teachers are fully dedicated to the students and can offer extra academic assistance. In addition to a quality education, cadets can expect to have organized daily study time to ensure they complete their assignments and keep from falling behind. Many parents with troubled teens think that the structure and discipline taught in military boarding schools is just what their child needs, but there are actually

Feedback SISTER SCHOOL PROJECT Introduction On November 18, 2000 four members of the Superior Elementary School community left Denver to travel to Khandbari, Nepal home of their sister school, the Surya Boarding School. The team consisted of Dr. Holly Hultgren, Principal of Superior Elementary, 5 th grade teacher Gregg Rice, Reading Specialist Amy Schackman and parent representative Mary Commander. The journey was very successful in the endeavor to build and enhance the relationship with their sister school. The group brought eight boxes of school supplies and hundreds of pen-pal letters from the students at Superior. The staff and students of Surya Boarding School were also very enthusiastic to welcome the guests from their sister school, Superior Elementary. The team from Superior Elementary shared lessons for 4 days with the students at Surya Boarding School in areas such as literature, poetry, geography, science, and oral hygiene. All lessons at Surya are taught in English and the team was pleasantly surprised at the proficiency of all students, especially their command of the English language, both written and verbal. A dinner was hosted by the Superior contingent for the staff of the Surya Boarding School to get to know one another on a more personal basis and to discuss educational strategies. It was a memorable and very successful "meeting of the minds."

The ERIC Clearinghouse for Social Studies/Social Science Education (ERIC/ChESS) is one of sixteen subject-oriented clearinghouses that compose the ERIC system. The heart of this system, the ERIC database of education-related literature, contains nearly one million citations with abstracts, drawn from a variety of disciplines. Citations to journal articles, teaching and curriculum guides, bibliographies, research reports, and conference papers are included. The ERIC database is available free in many large public and university libraries and on the Internet.
The listings below are drawn from the ERIC database and include both teaching materials and general background information on the topic. The key to obtaining the full text of the materials cited below is the unique ERIC number assigned to each item in the database. Journal articles, denoted by "EJ" numbers (for example, EJ549890) can be copied at most academic libraries, borrowed through interlibrary loan, or purchased from article reprint services such as UnCover, UMI, and ISI. Research reports, conference papers, and other materials besides journal articles are denoted by "ED" numbers (for example, ED398110); paper or microfiche copies of most of these documents can be purchased from the ERIC Document Reproduction Service (EDRS), 7420 Fullerton Road, Suite 110, Springfield, VA 22153-2852; (800) 443-3742; (703) 440-1400; <edrs@inet.ed.gov>; <http://edrs.com>; or copied from an ERIC microfiche collection, available at many libraries.

Kindergarten Boarding School
I'm not kidding. According to BBC News the newest trend for middle-class families is to send their kindergartners to boarding schools and some programs accept children as young as two for their programs. Seems very Brave New World to me somehow, particularly when the principal of the school explains "the boarding experience fostered abilities in the children which day attendance was not necessarily able to do." He continues: "The boarders are more street-wise and more independent." What I wonder about is why being street-wise is so important for a two year old, particularly of the growing middle class in China. But more importantly than that, this seems to be about the least attachment parenting-oriented approach I can imagine. Why is this basic concept so hard for parents to remember: Children need parents. They need supervision and they need role models, but most of all they need love, attention and nurturing. China is a country that has always paid great attention to agriculture, indeed, that was one of the cornerstones of the Communist Revolution and Chairman Mao's initial improvements to the nation, yet I'm sure there isn't one farmer in China who would plant a field then leave it fallow hoping that the crops would grow well and be ready to harvest at the end of the season. So it's a mystery why some modern Chinese seem to think they can do just that with their children.

Bush picks conservative for court
file:home1
July 20, 2005 BY DEB RIECHMANN

WASHINGTON President Bush named federal appeals judge John G. Roberts Jr. on Tuesday to fill the first Supreme Court vacancy in a decade, delighting Republicans and unsettling Democrats by picking a young jurist of impeccably conservative credentials. If confirmed by the Republican-controlled Senate, the 50-year-old Roberts would succeed retiring Justice Sandra Day O'Connor, long a swing vote on a court divided over abortion, affirmative action, states' rights and more. The president said his choice will ''strictly apply the Constitution in laws, not legislate from the bench.'' In brief remarks of his own, Roberts said he has argued 39 cases before the Supreme Court in a career as a private attorney and government lawyer. ''I always got a lump in my throat whenever I walked up those marble steps to argue a case before the court, and I don't think it was just from the nerves,'' he said. ''I look forward to the next step in the process before the United States Senate,'' he added.

A National Historic Landmark, Angel Island Immigration Station served as the primary West Coast port of entry for immigrants to the United States. Chinese immigrants detained at the station carved poetry into the walls of the barracks, leaving an invaluable historical record of the Pacific immigration experience. Long-term deterioration and water damage threaten the structural integrity of the buildings. Many of the inscriptions have weathered to the point that they are barely legible. http://www.bccn.boone.in.us/jamestown/edhistory.htm
History: Education History
Between 1832 and 1837 private schools were established in all of the new settlements. A schoolhouse was established in Jackson Township in 1835 and provided what is described by Harden as 'rudimentary instruction' for pupils who came through the forests and swamps to attend. Schools in the county at this time were supported by subscription and settlers took turns boarding the teacher as part of their pay. School terms ran from six to twelve weeks. The first school in Jamestown, built of rounded logs and heated by a huge fireplace, was located near the Boone-Hendricks County line. Another school building stood west of Jamestown and yet a third, at a later date, was located on the north side of Main Street at the west end of the business district. These schools operated under the jurisdiction of the district school system. By the 1870's, nine one-room schools were operating in Jackson Township. These nine schools were consolidated into two, one school in Jamestown and one in Advance. The Jamestown School was erected of brick in 1873 at a cost of $12,000 on land said to have been donated by John B. Couch. It should be noted that the cost figure cited in the Historical Society's History of Boone County, Indiana is $15.000. Elementary and high school students were transported to the new school by means of horse drawn school hack, the precursor of the modern school bus. The facility was heated by stoves until a steam heating plant was installed during the holiday vacation of 1906-1907. Despite improvements to the school in 1906, the structure was condemned by the State Board of Health in 1907. Permission was granted to hold classes in the building for the 1907-1908 school year. If repairs and changes were made, the condemnation was to be lifted.
