Grouping/Scheduling School Administrators Article SCHOOL ADMINISTRATORS ARTICLE Alternative School Calendars: Smart Idea or Senseless Experiment? If American students are to compete effectively in a global economy, do they need to spend substantially more time in school? Would increasing the length of the school year or school day raise students' achievement, or would it be more advantageous to alter how we use the time we currently have? Many school systems are experimenting with alternative instructional schedules in an attempt to find out. Included: Year-round schools, later start times, the four-day week, trimesters, and more! Are American schools serving up a quality education for all students? Although we provide students more years of formal schooling than any other nation, our school year is short, usually only 180 days. The world's average is 200 to 220 days per year, and Japan's is 243. (See "Give Kids More School,"

Child Protective Services Social Worker (Welfare): We had a parent support group but there wasn't enough interest to keep it going. It became parents just complaining against welfare. Also cost is a problem. The parents didn't want to pay the $15.00 required. Teacher of Emotionally Handicapped Students: Because of a lack of resources. There is no good, affordable child psychiatry available. The system is so crowded we can't get help even from the available services. Principal of Middle School: They are available now. Maintaining discipline while maximizing educational opportunities
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. The Center for Evaluation and Education Policy at Indiana University in Bloomington and the Indiana Youth Services Association are releasing major new findings on out-of-school suspension, expulsion and disciplinary alternatives in Indiana in an effort to contribute to a statewide dialogue on school discipline. This week the project, Children Left Behind, released a set of three briefing papers focusing on the extent to which school exclusion is effective or necessary in maintaining safe and productive school climates. While schools must make every effort to ensure safe school climates, the findings of the CLB project reveal that out-of-school suspension and expulsion do not appear to contribute to that goal. Key findings of the project include:
  • At the national level, higher rates of out-of-school suspensions are associated with poorer school climate, higher dropout rates and lower achievement.
