GROWING UP IN THE U.S.
I was born in Vancouver, Canada, but my family moved to Pasadena, California when I was still in school. There wasn't a large Indian American community at all in Pasadena, so we were definitely one of the few. It was kind of weird, going to high school with the sort of typical California blond-haired, blue-eyed students all around me. When I was growing up, I wasn't aware of my Indian identity. I think it was more American. Then I got to college and realized how Indian my upbringing was. It was a weird feeling. I had identified myself as American, spending all of my adolescence rejecting my Indian culture, saying, "I'm American. I'm American." And then when you get a little bit older, you realize "wow, now I'm more Indian than American." My family was very traditional and very Hindu. I remember my mom saying, "Well, if you don't learn how to cook, no one is going to want to marry you." There wasn't much progressive thinking going on in those days. So I totally rebelled. I was more like a tomboy and joined sports teams and was always doing the things that interested me, but that my mom said wouldn't make me a good marriage candidate. FROM ACTING TO DIRECTING
I took my first acting class in high school. I got very excited about it, and it was the first thing I got interested in and thought, "Wow, I wanna do this. This speaks to me the most." And, of course, that's not a very popular decision with Indian parents. So, it kind of played into the whole double life of trying to be a good student by day and then going to these acting classes at night and trying to learn that craft.

Jan 8, 2005 Indians are just Yankee-doodle dandy
By Priyanka Bhardwaj
NEW DELHI - A study released last month by the US Census Bureau confirms what has been suspected for quite some time: that Indians are the best educated, highest-earning, youngest and most likely to be white collar workers among all major ethnic g roups in the United States, including native-born Americans.
The study, titled "We the People: Asian Americans in the United States" and based on 2000 census results, highlights the enormous socio-economic mix of the 10 million Asian-Americans, of whom more than one-third live in California. In the past 10 years, the number of Asian-Americans has increased from 6.9 million, or 2.8% of the US population, in 1990 to 10.2 million, or 3.6%. If one were to take into account mixed race Asian-Americans, counted by the census for the first time in the year 2000, the population is 11.9 million, or 4.2% of the US population.

References Approximately 2 million American Indians and Alaska Natives live in the United States. Since July 1, 1990, the U.S. population of American Indians and Alaska Natives has increased by 10.4%. The number of American Indians and Alaska Natives is expected to increase steadily to 2.4 million in 2000, 3.1 million in 2020, and 4.4 million in 2050. Major subgroups in this population are American Indians, Eskimos, and Aleuts. Most American Indians and Alaska Natives have settled across the country; the largest percentage resides in Oklahoma (13%). Although many tribes consider tobacco a sacred gift and use it during religious ceremonies and as traditional medicine, the tobacco-related health problems they suffer are caused by chronic cigarette smoking and spit tobacco use. Because of the cultural and geographic diversity of American Indians and Alaska Natives, tobacco use often varies widely by region or subgroup.
Health Effects
  • Nationally, lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death among American Indians and Alaska Natives.

[Access article in PDF] Becoming American, Becoming Indian: An Immigrant Community in New York City is a clearly written and engaging ethnographic study of South Asian neighborhoods in New York City. While much of the literature in South Asian diaspora studies remains mired in rehearsed generalities, Madhulika Khandelwal's study is refreshing because it is so rigorously grounded in neighborhood ethnography, carefully tracing the population and employment shifts between Manhattan and the outer boroughs of NYC, and subsequent movements away from well-known Indian ethnic business districts like 74 th Street in Jackson Heights back into the suburbs.

Asian American
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
An Asian American can be generally defined as a person of Asian ancestry or origin who was born in or is an immigrant to the United States The term "Asian American" is credited to the historian Yuji Ichioka who, in the late , used it to describe members of a new pan-ethnic radical political identity who shared common histories, experiences, and goals. In the United States, this term has widely supplanted the term " oriental " which was popularly used before the to describe East Asian peoples regardless of nationality, upbringing, or origin. Some have argued "oriental" is politically loaded and referenced a colonial "other" (see orientalism "Asian American", like " Hispanic American ", can not be defined as a similar group of people sharing similar cultures or physical features. For example, Indian Americans Filipino Americans , and Japanese Americans are very different from each other in both culture and physical features. Like the term "Hispanic American", saying that a person is "Asian" is not specifically referring to a certain lifetyle or culture and could refer to a wide range of different Asian ethnic sub-groups. Additionally, although the term "Asian" in the United States is most popularly used as a term to group peoples with physical characteristics resembling East Asian people, Asians from the
