Health Problems in Asian American/Pacific Islander and Native Hawaiian Women
Who are Asian American/Pacific Islander and Native Hawaiian women in the United States? Asian American/Pacific Islanders and Native Hawaiian women represent one of the fastest-growing and most diverse populations of women in the United States. Asian Americans represent a number of groups, including women from Vietnamese, Korean, Asian Indian, Japanese, Filipino, Cambodian, Laotian, and Chinese descent. Among Pacific Islanders are women who are Hawaiian, Samoan, Guamanian, Tongan, and Fijian. So, this population has a vast array of languages and cultures. Some of these women are 4th and 5th generation Asian Americans, while 75% are recent immigrants and refugees. Native Hawaiians and American Samoans are part of the Asian-American population, but they are native to this country, not immigrants. Asian American History PROJECT DESCRIPTION America has been called both a melting pot and a tossed salad because of its history of immigration and assimilation. However, not all immigration groups were quickly or easily accepted into the American way of life. Asians were one of the groups that found it hard to come to the United States, and once they had immigrated, found their lives restricted in ways that other immigrant groups did not encounter. In spite of these obstacles, Asian Americans have contributed in many ways to our nation's history and continue to be one of the largest new immigrant groups today. To learn more about the history and culture of these Asian Americans, Scholastic.com presents Asian American Heritage. This online activity introduces different stories and activities to students and reinforces that Asian Americans have diverse cultural backgrounds. This activity celebrates those differences especially during Asian Pacific American Heritage Month in May. Pakistani-born painter Shahzia Sikander is a breakout South Asian star
By By Barbara Kantrowitz and Julie Scelfo Newsweek March 22 issue - Six floors above Times Square, in a bare rehearsal studio, the sun is rising on Bombay. At the center of the room, a slender middle-aged woman chants softly. She's surrounded by two dozen young performers playing beggars and peddlers who rise from slumber in the intricate ballet of an urban morning scene. Their dance moves become ever more energetic as the pianist in the corner pounds harder on the keys. The woman is Madhur Jaffrey, the actress and cookbook author who has made a career of introducing the tastes of her native India to the West. But this time she is serving up an enticing mix of Indian and Western rhythms called "Bombay Dreams," a Broadway musical that Andrew Lloyd Weber and his creative team hope will hook mainstream America when the show opens next month. RELATED STORY Profiles: Powerful and Influential South Asians The stars of this breakout generation include directors like M. Night Shyamalan, 33 ("The Sixth Sense," "Signs"), and artists like the critically acclaimed Pakistani-born painter Shahzia Sikander, 34. ABSTRACT The problem of meeting the normative demands of two cultures (host country and country of origin) has been linked to adolescent substance use as a way to cope with conflicts with parents. This paper examines intergenerational conflict as a precursor to alcohol, tobacco, and other drug use among second-generation Asian-Indian adolescents (Asian Americans whose parents emigrated from India). Based on systems theory, a structural model depicting the linkage and temporal sequelae of mediating factors is presented. Risk and protective factors unique to Asian-Indian adolescentssociodemographic, family relationship, peer bonding, psychological, cultural, and ecologicalare identified. Further, the impact of gender differences on family relationships is examined. Implications of the findings for drug use prevention policies, with special emphasis on developing comprehensive primary prevention strategies, are discussed.

INTRODUCTION Demographics Between 1980 and 1990, the Asian-Indian population grew by 126%, as compared with 108% for Asian Americans overall (U.S. Bureau of the Census, 1990). Asian-Indians are now the fourth largest Asian-American group. However, there are significant differences among Asian-Indian, Chinese, and Japanese Americans (U.S. Bureau of the Census, 1990). While the national average for completing four or more years of high school is 66.5%, it is 80.1% for Asian-Indian, 71.3% for Chinese, and 81.6% for Japanese Americans. Also, while 51.9% of Asian-Indian, 36.6% of Chinese, and 26.4% of Japanese Americans have completed four or more years of college, the national average is 16.2%.

Saturday, Jun 18, 2005,Page 16 Advertising On a fine spring day in Manhattan, Reshma Taufiq, 28, was the first to audition for a role on a new MTV channel that will be aimed at second-generation desis, or immigrants from the Indian subcontinent. Her emerald-green bodice fit snugly atop navel-baring jeans, and her long black hair curtained her cheekbones as she sweated under the studio lights, trying sexy, then cheery, then exuberant variations on "Live from Jackson Heights, Queens, it's MTV Desi." Azhar Usman, 29, with his knitted skullcap and full beard, presented somewhat differently. An MTV executive, he explained, had recruited him, saying, "We're going to redefine the identity of the MTV host. It doesn't have to be someone sexy and good-looking." A comedian (and lawyer) from Chicago, Usman used the audition to invent an exaggeratedly accented (and quite amusing) character: Vijay the VJ.
