The awards were announced on April 29 by the US Pan Asian American Chamber of Commerce. Why Indian Americans should Support Bill Lann Lee
Debasish Mishra M any Indian Americans nationwide are lending their support to Bill Lann Lee, a Chinese American, who is currently serving as the Acting Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights, the top civil rights enforcement position in the country. Across the country, many Americans are demanding that the word, 'Acting', be removed from Lee's title so that he may fully and vigorously fight for civil rights protections. If his current nomination is confirmed by the US Senate, Lee will become the highest ranking Asian American in the Clinton Administration. This has led some in the Indian American community to ask, 'Why should I give my support to a Chinese American? What has he done for us as Indian Americans?' The answer is simple: we should support Lee's nomination because his record in enforcing our nation's civil rights laws demonstrate that he is a man of enormous integrity and conviction who is committed to making this a better country for all Americans. The Civil Rights Division at the DOJ enforces laws that prohibit discrimination on the basis of race, national origin, gender, disability, religion and other protected categories, in the workplace and in schools. Bill Lann Lee has done much to improve the lives of Americans by eradicating discrimination. One need only look at his record to understand why the Indian American community should step up and firmly support him.

http://www.indnet.org/census/
India Network Foundation, Inc. Demographic Data on Asian Americans and Asian Indian Population in the US Prepared by Professor K.V. Rao from a variety of resources on the web. A racial category of Asian Indian was added to the US census questionnaire in 1980 for the first time in the history of Census. Due to lack of publicity of this new racial category and confusion with native American population with Asian Indian population, the 1980 census did not capture all Asian Indians and there were cases of misclassification and self-reporting errors. The 1990 census captured most Asian Indians but confusion remained. The 2000 US Census not only included Asian Indian race category but also allowed people to specify more than one race. Detailed analysis of mutli-race will be presented when the data is released by the Bureau which we hope will provide a picture of assimilation of Asian Indians with other racial groups through marriage/love relationships. The total United States population in 2000 is 281,421,906 (without any adjustment) The overall intercensal growth rate from 1990-2000 was 105.87% and the average annual growth rate was 7.6%. Asian Indians now comprise 0.6 percent of the United States population with 1,678,765 (crossing first time the million mark). Asian Americans consists of 3.6 percent of the United States population, with 10,242,998. By including multiple race reporting, this number exceed 11 million population. Asian Indians form the third largest Asian American Group comprising 16.4% of the Asian Americans (Chinese, and Filipinos take the first two slots).

South Asian Americans Organize Tsunami Relief Efforts
(Private American relief agencies report millions of dollars in donations)
By Edmund F. Scherr
Washington File Special Correspondent

Washington South Asian communities across the United States are mobilizing resources to help fund relief efforts in the wake of the December 26 tsunami that devastated coastal areas of countries throughout the region and to support those who have lost friends and family members in the disaster.
American-based private relief organizations report being overwhelmed by donations and offers of help.
The United States has several large concentrations of immigrants from the affected nations and thousands of American-born citizens with ties to that region.
Southern California has well over 100,000 immigrants from the nations hit by the tsunami, and the San Francisco area has thousands of immigrants from India and Sri Lanka. California is also home to about half of America's 70,000-strong Indonesian immigrant community.
Chicago has an estimated 120,000 residents of Indian descent, and there are large numbers of South Asian immigrants in the New York, Detroit and Washington metropolitan areas.

For more Festival information or tickets, please call 415-255-4299. The Festival proudly presents the feature film debut from Indian Canadian filmmaker Gaurav Seth, A PASSAGE TO OTTAWA, starring Nabil Mehta, Amy Sobel and Jim Codrington. Based on a Yuri Nagabin short story, A PASSAGE TO OTTAWA, tells the touching tale of an eight year-old boy and his search for a hero. Also offered will be Indian Australian filmmaker Kay Rasool's timely documentary MY JOURNEY, MY ISLAM. MY JOURNEY, MY ISLAM is a personal look at Muslim women, living at various points of the globe, and their relationships to their faith. In addition to offering the latest films from Indian and Indian American filmmakers, the Festival celebrates its two decades with a look back. SFIAAFF proffers "Salaam Mira!: The Short Films of Mira Nair," a program that highlights the movies of a master filmmaker whose works have been an important part of previous Festivals. An essential figure in world cinema, filmmaker Mira Nair (MISSISSIPPI MASALA, SALAAM BOMBAY!) has always crafted movies that look at the melding of cultures, often with a lighthearted touch. "Salaam Mira!: The Short Films of Mira Nair" includes two rarely seen documentaries, SO FAR FROM INDIA (SFIAAFF 1983) and LAUGHING CLUB OF INDIA, and a short, THE DAY MERCEDES BECAME A HAT.

Asian Americans: Arthur Hu's Index of Diversity
(c) Arthur Hu 1984-2020, please cite when using data from here on how to get more complete data or complete text of these references Some people collect stuff, this is my 15 plus years collection of racial statistics, organized around statistics for Asian Americans. Most racial statistics are given for blacks, maybe hispanics, but very few for Asians. Asians are unusual in that they have both the characteristics of disadvantaged minorities, like the African Americans, and over-achieving minorities such as the Jews and Episcopalians. What is remarkable is that, contrary to the popular thesis that Whites are always on top, and persons of color are always on the bottom because of racism, more often than not, Asians have lower rates of most headline problems. You'll almost never see them documented because of the unwritten rule that Whites must end up best and Blacks, worst. If you wander around, you'll also find evidence of when even the lower income, lower education Hispanics are better (AIDS rates, infant mortality, life expectancy) and even the few places where Blacks are better. I rank them, and figure out a conclusion instead of starting out with the conclusion and ommitting data that doesn't support it. Asians have higher household incomes are healthier , get better grades and test scores , go to the best colleges at the highest rates in the most rewarding and difficult fields commit fewer crimes , and have more solid families in terms of structure than the whites, even though they may have a higher rate of

"ABCD" - directed by Krutin Patel
ABCD Review by Emily Ting Respond to this review by posting your comments below! 12.22.01 Coming on the heels of "American Desi," Krutin Patel's feature debut "ABCD" is the newest addition to a slowly expanding Indian-American film library. Though rough in its production, it deals poignantly with generational and cultural clashes. Links Respond to this review by posting your comments below! Official website ABCD stands for American Born Confused Desi. A Desi is an Indian native, and ABCD describes young Indian-Americans caught between their Indian roots and their American lifestyles. The film centers around immigrant Anju Mehta (Madhur Jaffrey) and her two grown Desi children, Raj (Faran Tahir), a hardworking accountant, and Nina (Sheetal Sheth), a successful ad executive. Raj is the obedient son who dutifully entered an arranged engagement with a traditional Indian woman whom he doesn't quite love, and Nina is the angry daughter who uses promiscuity as a weapon of rebellion. Anju is the typical Indian matriarch who wishes the best for her children but often gets her goodwill mistaken for oppression. For the kids, it's a constant struggle to balance their American identity with their mother's plea that they not forget their Indian roots.
