Asian / Asian American Music
Introduction
Note: This site is constantly being updated, especially the calendar of events and log... added pictures of Jeff Chang (see Log #23) and Kiran Ahluwalia (see Log #24)...
Site coverage: contemporary music by Asian Americans (and Asian Canadians)... also contemporary music influenced by Asia.
The reviews on this page were mostly written for a DC-area 'zine called, AAMPLITUDE. It was put out by , a non-profit organization that existed from the early 80's to mid-90's. As a collector of Asian American recordings (lp's, cassettes, cd's) I had the opportunity to play some of this music on my Asian American radio show, "Gold Mountain." For many years, the magazine-like program aired on WPFW 89.3 FM, the DC community station owned by Pacifica. ( And I should add that this site has some coverage of radio about Asian Americans, things heard over the air, and other encounters with radio. Meanwhile, I, eventually, hope to explore the notions of Asian American music what it might be, whether there is a viable "Asian American aesthetic", and how it fits into the musical categories one runs into.

The Nov. 5 midterm elections saw a significant Indian-American participation, even though most of the candidates who ran for office did not make it. Young Indian Americans involved in the process aired their views regarding the election to News India-Times. The three respondents in this Round Table are Toby Chaudhuri of Washington, D.C., national press secretary to Marian Wright, head of the Children’s Defense Fund, former special assistant to the secretary, Department of Interior, and deputy press secretary to Al Gore’s Presidential campaign 2000; Gail Dave of New York, an attorney and chair of Project Impact, a national nonprofit, nonpartisan organization aimed at creating greater South Asian American political participation; and Narsi Narsimhan of Georgia, who runs the Indian Professionals Network and maintains a voter list in Atlanta that reaches thousands of Indian Americans. Q: What do you think of the results of Nov. 5 elections - are they in favor of Indian-American interests? GAIL Dave
: I thought Dr. Shambhu Banik (a physician and Republican activist in Greater Washington) was a good role model as he advised that we should have good relations with both parties. Our primary interest is to increase participation and those are not partisan interests but, rather, democratic interests democratic with a small ‘d.’ I unfortunately don’t know the numbers for South Asians voting, but generally the campaigning did not reflect issues of concern to our community domestically - for example, immigration, bilingual education, hate crimes. All these took such a backseat in the elections that I don’t know if our interests were really favored.

Often the term “East Asian” and “Asian American” cause confusion in relation to
library collections. Traditionally, the East Asian collections focused on East Asian
countries such as Japan, Korea, the Philippines, and China rather than on the
distinct experiences of Asians in America or of Chinese in other countries, known
as ChineseOverseas. Asian Americans include the following groups: Asian Indians, Chinese, Filipino, Japanese, Korean, South Asians (Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka Americans), and Southeast Asians (Burmese, Cambodian (Kampuchean), Lao, Lao Hmong, Lao Mien, Thai, Vietnamese Americans) . Desis in the House is what cultural studies ought to be. Sunaina Maira gets deep inside of the social and cultural worlds of second generation Indian Americans and illuminates the links between the local and global, history and nostalgia, nationalism and cosmopolitanism. Maira's perceptive insights into the complex and fluid styles, music, dances, desires and dreams of desi youth will force us all to think about cultural identities in new ways."

They are just two of the hundreds of hip young people who flock to the desi (i.e., South Asian) party scene that flourishes in the Big Apple. New York City, long the destination for immigrants and migrants, today is home to the largest Indian American population in the United States. Coming of age in a city remarkable for its diversity and cultural innovation, Indian American and other South Asian youth draw on their ethnic traditions and the city's resources to create a vibrant subculture. Some of the city's hottest clubs host regular bhangra parties, weekly events where young South Asians congregate to dance to music that mixes rap beats with Hindi film music, bhangra (North Indian and Pakistani in origin), reggae, techno, and other popular styles. Many of these young people also are active in community and campus organizations that stage performances of "ethnic cultures."

South Asian American Studies A Working Bibliography 1975-1994
Rosane Rocher
A collection of essays, The Asian American: The Historical Experience , edited by Norris Hundley in 1976, included an article originally published by Gary R. Hess in the Pacific Historical Review As a bibliography developed for a course in which a majority of enrolled students were born of post-1965 immigrants from India in the United States, this selection of titles differs in some respects from that in South Asians in North America: An Annotated and Selected Bibliography edited by Jane Singh and others at the Center for South and Southeast Asia Studies, University of California, Berkeley, in 1988. The original occasion for Singh's bibliography was the cataloguing of a library collection on the Gadar Party, an organization founded in 1913 by immigrants from the Indian subcontinent on the West Coast of the United States and Canada in support of India's struggle for independence. The difference in focus is reflected in the title: whereas South Asians in North America evokes South Asian sojourners on alien American soiland includes items dealing with visitors to North America such as Vivekananda, the present bibliography places the South Asian American experience within the context of an Asian American ethnicity. It is the premise of the course for which this bibliography was developed that the experience of Americans of South Asian origin is best studied in the light, not only of a global South Asian diaspora, but also of the shared experiences of successive generations of Americans of Asian ethnicity. Differently from the focus indicated in the subheadings "The Immigrant Experience, 1900-1946" and "The Immigrant Experience, 1947-1986" in

HOME June 21, 2005 Asian-American MTV MTV is planning 3 new channels aimed at Indian-Americans, Chinese-Americans and Korean-Americans. That's what MTV World is counting on as it introduces three new channels focusing on the growing population of young, acculturated Asian-Americans: first, MTV Desi, which will go on the air in late July; then MTV Chi, for Chinese-Americans, by the end of the year; and MTV K for Korean-Americans next year. The channels will not be merely tweaked reproductions of MTV India, MTV China or MTV Korea, three of MTV's 42 channels abroad. Rather, they will, like their target audiences, be hybrids, blending here and there and grappling with identity issues, mostly in English.
MTV Desi will serve as the prototype. Interspersed among Bollywood videos, electronic tabla music and English-Gujarati hip-hop , it will feature brief documentary clips profiling desis, comic skits about South Asian-American generational conflicts, interviews with bicultural artists and desi house parties, live. MTV Chi will mix up Mandarin rock, Canto pop and Chinese-American rap; MTV K will tap into South Korean hip-hop and the little-known but vibrant Korean-American pop scene.

Stark Contrasts Found Among Asian Americans
Print Email Indian Americans have surged forward as the most successful Asian minority in the United States, reporting top levels of income, education, professional job status and English-language ability, even though three-fourths were foreign-born, according to U.S. census data released Wednesday. The striking success of Asian Americans who trace their heritage to India contrasted with data showing struggles among Cambodian, Laotian and Hmong immigrants. Those three groups reported continued significant poverty rates, low job skills and limited English-language ability since their flight from war and political turmoil. The report, "We the People: Asians in the United States," was based on 2000 census data and underscored the enormous socioeconomic diversity among the nation's 10 million Asian Americans, more than one third of whom live in California, the state with their largest population. Asian Americans increased from 6.9 million, or 2.8% of the U.S. population, in 1990 to 10.2 million, or 3.6%, in 2000. Including mixed-race Asian Americans, counted by the census for the first time in 2000, the population was 11.9 million, or 4.2%.
