Introduction to Silambam Nillaikalakki
SILAMBAM is a traditional stick fighting system from South India . South India has a rich culture of many thousands years, at least inheritated since the Dravidian empires. The nowaday Tamil culture and people still have highly valuable gems to share, amongst them is Silambam. Though fighting with sticks is universal, it has reached there a summit in technics intricacy, complexity and efficiency. Silambam is the name in Tamil for a practice encountered throughout the whole South India. It supposedly comes from Silam or Silambu , meaning hill in Tamil, and Bamboo , a Marhat word. Hence Silambamboo , shortened to Silambam , roughly meaning "Bamboo from the Hills", as sticks were usually made out of a special kind of filled, yellow bamboo found there. We can point that the style hereby presented originates from the Kurinji Hills , presently in the Kerala state, which also consolidates the reference to hills. NILLAIKALAKKI designates the style presented here. Nillai meaning "posture", and

With a change in perceptions about beauty and adornment, the aboriginal Indian Bindiya, the symbol of inner shakti, the fabled red dot ‘kumkum’ that the women wore in the center of their forehead has now become a fashion statement. Associated with marriage and feminity, the practice of wearing a bindi is a Vedic tradition that women follow as a conformation to the spirit of womanhood . [You may have to set your browser to Unicode text encodings and select a unicode font.] The Encyclopedia of Indian Philosophies is an ongoing project to assemble and summarize all that is currently known about the various systems (darsana) of Indian philosophy. Initiated forty years ago, the entire series is planned to consist of some 28 volumes: 26 dealing with particular philosophical systems, an introductory Bibliography, and a concluding Glossary/Index. Karl H. Potter is Professor Emeritus in the Department of Philosophy at the University of Washington. Each volume in the series contains an Introduction by its Editor(s), followed by summaries of all the philosophical texts of the system known to exist in Western language translation, or extant only in editions, or in a few cases available only in manuscript. These summaries are arranged in the chronological order in which the texts appear to have been written, and provide a guide to the literature together with a flowing account of the development of thought through the history of the system being covered. The summaries are solicited from specialists in the field from throughout the world who have an intimate knowledge of the texts being summarized. For purposes of control, "Indian philosophical work" as understood for the project is confined to treatises which are (1) of philosophical interest throughout; (2) theoretical rather than purely practical in their intended function, and (3) polemical or at least expository in a context where defense of one view among alternatives is appropriate.

117. Encyclopedia Of North American Indians - - Religion
Essay by a Osage theologian on the religious traditions of various native peoples.
http://college.hmco.com/history/readerscomp/naind/html/na_032600_religion.htm
Entries Publication Data Advisory Board Maps ... World Civilizations Encyclopedia of North American Indians
Religion
The phenomena referred to by the term Native American religions For instance, among the Ni U Konska Some would argue that the so-called vision quest is evidence of the quintessential individualism of Plains Indian peoples. However, just the opposite can be argued, because in Plains cultures the individual is always in symbiotic relationship with the community. This ceremony involves personal sacrifice: rigorous fasting (no food or liquids) and prayer over several days (typically four to seven) in a location removed from the rest of the community. Yet in a typical rite of vigil or vision quest, the community or some part of the community assists the individual in preparing for the ceremony and then prays constantly on behalf of the individual throughout the ceremony. Thus by engaging in this ceremony, the individual acts on behalf of and for the good of the whole community. Even when an individual seeks personal power or assistance through such a ceremony, he or she is doing so for the ultimate benefit of the community. In God Is Red Indian peoples, then, tend to locate sacred power spatially—in terms of places or in terms of spatial configuration. This is in stark contrast to European and Euro-American religious traditions, which tend to express spirituality in terms of time: a regular hour on Sundays and a seasonal liturgical calendar that has become more and more distanced from any sense of the actual flow of seasons in particular places and is therefore both more abstract and more portable than Native American traditions. In the Southern Hemisphere, for instance, Christians celebrate Lent (named for springtime and the lengthening of the days) and Easter during the antipodean autumn. It would be an exaggeration to argue that Indian peoples have no sense of time or that Europeans have no sense of space. Rather, spatiality is a dominant category of existence for Native Americans whereas time is a subordinate category. Just the opposite is generally true for European peoples.
