Police: Two killed in Indian blast
Story Tools MUMBAI, India (CNN) Two people were killed and 15 others were wounded Monday in a blast in a crowded suburb of Mumbai, India, a police official said. The official said it was too soon to say whether the blast was an attack, but security has been tightened. Officials said the explosion took place at the rear of an empty city bus in Ghatkopar, an eastern suburb of Mumbai, previously known as Bombay. The casualties were bystanders, officials said, and the bus, which was close to a railway station, was destroyed in the blast. Such blasts in the teeming metropolitan area are rare. India has been concerned over recent attacks against Indian targets in the disputed territory of Kashmir. India's Jammu and Kashmir state is in the north of the country. Mumbai is on the western coast of India, toward the south along the Arabian Sea.

Indian PM says sorry for quit threat
It is widely thought that Vajpayee is the only person who can keep India's fragile coalition together By staff and wire reports NEW DELHI, India Indian Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee has said he is sorry for the trouble he caused parliament by threatening to resign. Vajpayee apologized to parliament on Wednesday, saying his party did not accept a dramatic offer he made to step down and that he reconsidered after the governing coalition asked him to stay on. Parliament had adjourned in an uproar on Tuesday after 76-year-old Vajpayee told his Bharatiya Janata Party he was fed up with speculation about his health and bickering within the coalition, and threatened to quit. Indian voters stream to the polls
An Indian soldier helps an elderly voter to a polling station LUCKNOW, India Indian voters have streamed to the polls in the first of four state elections. Polling began Wednesday in the northern state of Punjab, which borders Pakistan. Polling in populous Uttar Pradesh, the traditional heartland of the Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), starts on Thursday. The small hill state of Uttaranchal and the rebellion-torn northeastern state of Manipur are also due to vote in the elections which cover a population of more than 200 million. The polls are being held in stages to allow police to be moved around the country to prevent violence. Analysts see the elections as a test of the popularity of the national ruling coalition, during a period of increased military tensions with Pakistan.

Indian plane hijacking a hoax
By Satinder Bindra CNN New Delhi NEW DELHI, India (CNN) - The reported hijacking of an Alliance Air Boeing 737 with 54 passengers on board turned out to be a false alarm, India's civil aviation minister said early Thursday. The incident was triggered by an anonymous phone call to ground controllers by someone reporting a hijacking. Staff alerted the pilot of the plane, who immediately took safety precautions, locking the cockpit door and landing at the nearest airport New Delhi, Civil Aviation Minister Shahnawaz Hussain said. "It was not a mock exercise or a planned exercise. We had assumed that the plane had been hijacked and the prime minister was also awake and was being informed," Hussain told reporters. The plane was on a domestic flight from Mumbai to New Dehli, and landed at 12:55 a.m. Thursday.

Ancient Indian remedy 'lowers cholesterol'
Ayurveda is an East Indian health practice using herbs, acupressure massage, yoga and other techniques WASHINGTON (Reuters) A traditional remedy used for 2,500 years in Indian ayurvedic medicine works to lower cholesterol, and in a new way that might lead to the development of improved drugs, researchers said on Thursday. The resin of guggul, or the myrrh shrub, is used in India to battle obesity, arthritis and artery disease, and is now approved for lowering cholesterol. David Moore of the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston found the guggul extract lived up to its reputation. "It really does lower cholesterol in a number of clinical studies in the Indian literature," Moore said. But the one study that has been done in the United States showed the remedy in fact raised cholesterol slightly, and Moore said it could interact with other drugs.

SPECIAL REPORT Kashmir history Where conflict rules NEW DELHI, India Indian police have killed two suspected terrorists who they say were planning to attack a shopping mall crowded with shoppers on the eve of a major Hindu festival. Warned that a terrorist attack might take place, a special team of police were dispatched to the upscale Ansal Plaza in downtown New Delhi, where they came upon the suspects at 8 p.m. (9:30 a.m. EST). The suspects were parking their white, late-model Suzuki car in the basement parking lot of the mall, commissioner of police for special operations Neeraj Kumar said Sunday. As police sought to question the men, who were walking toward the mall's shopping area carrying bags, they ran, Kumar said. When one of them fired on police, authorities returned fire, killing both men, Kumar said.

A technological marvel the cochlear implant can give partial hearing to many profoundly deaf people. But the implant has sparked a surprising debate. Many in the deaf community view deafness as a culture with its own distinct language and identity, not a medical problem in need of remedy. Deaf people ask, why fix something if it isn't broken? The question disturbs many hearing parents of deaf children who see the implant as the only hope for their child to participate in the hearing/speaking world. Producer Loretta Williams explores the culture of deafness.
Program Credits Speak Easy, Speak Not was produced by Loretta Williams. It aired as part of making Connections, Science on Soundprint, a special series funded in part by the National Science Foundation. Resources Links: Hearing Exchange A collection of resources and ideas on hearing loss including an interview with the Cochlear Corporation.
