India's history and culture is ancient and dynamic, spanning back to the beginning of human civilization. Beginning with a mysterious culture along the Indus River and in farming communities in the southern lands of India. The history of india is one puncuated by constant integration with migrating peoples and with the diverse cultures that surround India. Placed in the center of Asia, history in india is a crossroads of cultures from China to Europe, and the most significant Asian connection with the cultures of Africa. India's history is more than just a set of unique developments in a definable process; it is, in many ways, a microcosm of human history itself, a diversity of cultures all impinging on a great people and being reforged into new, syncretic forms. IndHistory.com brings you the india's history starting from ancient history of india to modern indian history. Shown below is the india timeline starting from 3000 BC of ancient indus valley civilization and harappa civilization to 1000 AD of Chola Dynasty of ancient history of india. Indian History in Short : The History of India begins with the birth of the Indus Valley Civilization in such sites as Mohenjo-Daro, Harappa, and Lothal, and the coming of the Aryans. These two phases are usually described as the pre-Vedic and Vedic perio ds. It is in the Vedic period that Hinduism first arose: this is the time to which the Vedas are dated.

Medieval India
The Rajput period was an era of chivalry and feudalism. The Rajputs weakened each other by constant fighting. This allowed the foreigners (Turks) to embark on victorious campaigns using duplicity and deceit wherever military strength failed against Rajputs. Mohammad Ghori defeated Prithviraj Chauhan, the Tomar ruler of Delhi, at the battle of Tarain in 1192 and left the Indian territories in the charge of his deputy, Qutubudin (reign - 1206 - 1210), who had started life as a slave. Khiljis, Tughlaqs, Sayyids and Lodis followed and this period is known as the Sultanate. When the power of the Sultans declined, the outlying provinces once again became important and the process of Hindu Islamic synthesis continued almost without any interruption. Babur (reign - 1526-30), the founder of the Mughal Empire in India, was the descendant of Timur as well as Changez Khan. Ousted by his cousins, he came to India and defeated Ibrahim, the last Lodi Sultan in 1526 at the First Battle of Panipat . There was a brief interruption to Mughal rule when Babur's son Humayun (reign - 1530-40) was ousted from Delhi, by Sher Shah, an Afghan chieftain.

The earliest known capital city of Indraprastha was founded by the Pandavas in c1450BC. Maya, the Danava architect built a splendid palace and court for them. Recent finds support the view that it was located in the Purana Qila area. There are various views as to how Delhi, the capital of Indian Subcontinent, derived its name. It may have come from Raja Dillu's Dilli, c100BC, which was sited just east of Lalkot, or from Dhilba founded by the Tomar Rajputs in c736AD. And some say it came from the medieval town of Dhillika located near present date Mehrauli. Other cities recorded are Surajpal's Surajkund c1024 AD, Qila Lal Kot c1024 AD which was built by Anangpal and Qila Rai Pithora c1170 AD of the brave and daring king Prithviraj Chauhan.
Ala-ud-Din-Khilji built a new capital for himself at Siri, c1302 AD. His palace of a thousand pillars saw many triumphs and tragedies, but has since completely gone to ruins. It was Ala-ud-Din-Khilji who built the magnificent tank called Hauz Khas. At that time it had enough water to meet the needs of the city. Ghiyas-ud-Din-Tughluq, in c1320 moved south and built the fort city of Tughlakabad on the rocky southern ridge. It has massive bastions and walls. Though strategically located, it was deserted within 5 years perhaps because of a shortage of water.

Places of Worship HISTORY OF INDIA India is a very vast nation geographically; it forms the meeting ground between the East and the West and hence an important destination to conduct trade with the Western nations. This point in particular, attracted many a foreign invaders to lay hands over this nation - known for her rich culture, wealth as well as tradition. India has always seen a variety of religions taking birth in different parts of the country an as a result, a natural tolerance grew for different groups following different religion types. However, as evil follows good, rifts took birth too. And one has been seeing bloodshed over matters of religious bias time and again. India has seen a variety of rulers including Persians, Greeks, Chinese nomads, Arabs, Portuguese, British and other raiders all of whom conquered over the local Hindu kingdoms who invariably survived their depradations, living out their own sagas of conquest and collapse. All the while, these local dynasties built upon the roots of a culture well established since the time of the first invaders, the Aryans. The discovery of India's most ancient civilization literally happened by accident. In the mid-1800's, British engineers who were busy constructing a railway line between Karachi and Punjab, found ancient, kiln-baked bricks along the path of the track. This discovery was however treated as a little more than curiosity unless archaeologists later revisited the site in the 1920's and determined that the bricks were over 5000 years old.

Student's Corner A (Very) Brief History of India
INDIA'S history goes back almost six thousand years and has passed through many different stages and societies and invasions from outside.
The earliest civilization was in the Indus Valley (now in Pakistan), with its well-planned city-states of HARAPPA AND MOHENJODARO , which lasted from 3250 to 1500 B.C.
At that point the ARYANS came in from the North and spread through large parts of India bringing with them their culture and religious beliefs, including the HINDU RELIGION
In 567 B.C. Gautama Buddha was born, who was the founder of the BUDDHIST RELIGION . Also at around this time Mahavira lived, who started the JAIN RELIGION.
Two hundred years later, in the 4th century B.C., Emperor ASHOKA , one of the greatest leaders of all of India's history, led the Mauryan Empire to take over almost all of what is now modern India.
They were followed by the Guptas in the north, while in the south part of India several different Hindu empires, the Cholas, the Pandyas and the Cheras spread and grew, trading with Europe and other parts of Asia till the end of the 1100s.
CHRISTIANITY entered India at about the same time as it came to Europe. Legend has it that St. Thomas the Apostle arrived in India in 52 A.D.

Photo: Rajendra Shaw/Oxfam Following independence India was divided up in a process called partition, to create Pakistan as a Muslim state. This was a difficult process; many millions of people had to travel between the new states, and in the unrest, people were killed. Mahatma Gandhi opposed partitition; he was assassinated by a Hindu fundamentalist. The dispute between India and Pakistan over Kashmir began at independence and has rumbled on ever since with periodic outbreaks of cross-border skirmishing. The potential dangers of conflict over Kashmir were underlined when both countries tested nuclear weapons within weeks of each other in May 1998 and for several months in 2002 there seemed to be a real risk of war. History of Kabaddi

How to Play

History:

Though kabaddi is primarily an Indian game, not much is known about the origin of this game. There is, however, concrete evidence, that the game is 4,000 year old. It is a team sport, which requires both skill and power, and combines the characteristics of wrestling and rugby. It was originally meant to develop self defence, in addition to responses to attack, and reflexes of counter attack by individuals, and by groups or teams. It is a rather simple and inexpensive game, and neither requires a massive playing area, nor any expensive equipment. This explains the popularity of the game in rural India. Kabaddi is played all over Asia with minor variations.
Kabaddi is known by various names viz. Chedugudu or Hu-Tu-Tu in southern parts of India, Hadudu (Men) and Chu - Kit-Kit (women) in eastern India, and Kabaddi in northern India. The sport is also popular in Nepal, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Japan and Pakistan.
Types of Kabaddi
In India, Kabaddi is recognised in three forms:

Maurya's empire came to power in 321 BC. The empire reached its peak under Emperor Ashoka who converted to Buddhism in 262 BC. Ashokan edicts and pillars can be seen in Delhi, Gujarat, Orissa, Sarnath in Uttar Pradesh and at Sanchi in Madhya Pradesh. In 319 AD, Chandragupta II founded the Gupta Empire. The arts flourished during this period, with some of the finest work being done at Ajanta, Ellora, Sanchi and Sarnath. Mughal Era - Muslim power first made itself strongly felt on the subcontinent with the raids of Mahmud of Ghazni. In 1192, Mohammed Ghori, who had been expanding his powers across the Punjab, broke into India and captured Ajmer. After Mohammed of Ghori was killed in 1206, Qutub-ud-din became the first of the Sultans of Delhi. The invasion of Muslims continued until Mughals came into power and ruled over northern India till the beginning of the 17th century. The six great Mughals were Babur, Humayun, Akbar, Jehangir, Shah Jehan and Aurangzeb and their reigns were between 1527 until 1707. Some of the wonderful monuments built during the Mughal reign are Taj Mahal, Fatehpur Sikri, Fort in Agra and Red Fort and Humayun's Tomb in Delhi.

"What makes a nation, is the past, what justifies one nation against others is the past", says the noted historian Eric Hobsbawm. Hence, when talking of a nation, it becomes very imperative that the past should also be talked about. And the past of India is as fascinating and interesting as it is momentous.
ORIGIN OF INDIA:
Indus Civilisation: The best place to start is no doubt the beginning but the beginning of India can be traced back to thousands of years ago, somewhere in the 2500 BC with the earliest but very advanced civilisation which was indigenous. Around 4,500 years ago, cities began to rise among the scattered agricultural settlements on the Indus plain. These were the cities of Mohenjo-daro and Harrapa. The ruins found show that the quality of life in those cities was higher than many Indians enjoy today. Around 1500 BC, after a continuous existence of 1,000 years, the Indus Valley Civilisation vanished from the face of earth. Aryan Invasion: In the middle of the second millennium BC, India was overwhelmed by the first of many invaders: the Aryans. They came in about 1500 BC from the grasslands of central Asia and thereby lived a nomadic life based on cattle raising. They settled in the region to the north west of India, known as the Punjab. With time, they drifted into the subcontinent and settled around the Gangetic Valley, pushing the early dark-skinned Dravidian settlers deeper into the south of the peninsula. The Aryans were the first of many invaders to India. There were constant invasions from Asia - Alexander the Great, the Scythians, the Huns, the Arabians, Persians and Afghans. Various religious groups battled for dominion. Power fluctuated between the Hindu, Muslim and Buddhists.

India Bharat Around 3000 BC, the Dravidian inhabitants of the Indus Valley, in present-day Pakistan, built about a hundred cities, erected huge temples in larger urban centers, like Harappa and Mohenjo Daro, created a written language that has yet to be deciphered, and carved cylindrical seals of rare perfection. With their irrigated agriculture they developed a prosperous economy and maintained active trade from the Indian Ocean to the spurs of the Himalayas, using the Indus River as their main means of communication. Little is known about their culture, their political organization or development except that, after five centuries of existence, invaders devastated the whole region, exterminating the population and destroying their civilization. Towards 1600 BC, waves of Indo-Europeans arrived from Afghanistan, gradually conquering the subcontinent. Armed with iron weapons, protected by armor and using war chariots, they subdued the local population and established numerous states. The civilization they created, later called Vedic, was based on a rigid caste system in which the conquerors constituted the dominant nobility. They were called the ariana or ayriana - nobility - giving rise to the term Aryan which was later generically used to designate all Indo-Europeans. The Iranian-Greek invasions of the 6th-4th centuries BC (see Iran) did not reach Magadha in the Ganges River valley, the most powerful state in India. Under the rule of Ashoka, 274-232 BC, Magadha occupied the entire subcontinent, except for the extreme south. Indian civilization proper dates from this period. Ashoka and his descendants were the driving force behind a cultural unification that included the organization and diffusion of Buddhism, based on the preaching of Gautama Siddhartha, who lived from 563 to 483 BC, and was later known as Buddha. Between the 1st and 3rd centuries AD, this civilization began to break up, fragmented by the development of the Seythian Kusana (see Afghanistan) and Ksatrapa states in the northeast.

Radiology in North India further evolved at the time of partition in 1947, when a large number of medical practitioners including radiologists migrated to Delhi from Pakistan. Some of the prominent radiologists among them were Dr. Diwan Chand Agarwal, Dr. R K Handa, Dr. R C Goulatia, Dr. R M Sharma and Dr. Roshan Lal. Dr. D C Agarwal had been one of the leading radiologists in Lahore since 1927. This remarkable man laid down the foundation of a modern X-ray clinic in Delhi. Similar advancements were taking place in the southern, western and eastern parts of India and Madras (now Chennai), Bombay (now Mumbai) and Calcutta grew in stature. The Barnard Institute of Radiology was established in Chennai and many radiologists who could not go abroad for training, went to Madras for their post-graduate studies.

History and Government
History: Indian civilisation can be traced back to at least 2500 BC, although the ancient civilisations did not encompass the whole of India as it is known today. The first known civilisation settled along the Indus River in what is now Pakistan. This, however, collapsed around 1500 BC. Between 521 and 486 BC, under Darius, the area became part of the Persian Empire. Alexander the Great arrived in India in 326 BC, but did not venture beyond the boundaries of the Persian Empire, which only extended as far as the Indus. India’s two great religions, Hinduism and Buddhism, had already been developed. Various dynasties followed, the last of which was the Gupta Empire (AD 319-606). The invasion of the White Huns brought all this to an end, and northern India became fragmented, and was only reunified with the arrival of Muslims from the west. During this time, the south had been trading by sea with the Romans and Egyptians. It took some time for Muslim forces to forge a permanent presence in northern India: in the late 12th century, Muhammad of Ghori, who had built a powerbase in what is now the Punjab, rapidly expanded eastwards. His conquests led to the establishment of Delhi as a major centre of political power and ultimately its position as the Indian capital. The next major influx after the Muslims was the Moghuls, who swept over the mountain passes from Central Asia in the 1520s and maintained effective control of the north until the mid-18th century.

India launches a powerful GSLV rocket toward space Space technology has allowed the nation of India to move into the world of high technology, a place previously occupied only by more-developed nations.
India has been up there since July 18, 1980, when it became the eighth to demonstrate it could send a satellite to orbit above Earth. India launched the satellite Rohini 1 on an Satellite Launch Vehicle (SLV) rocket from the Sriharikota Island launch site.
Indian cosmonaut Rakesh Sharma spent eight days in 1984 aboard the USSR's space station Salyut 7.
In recent years, India has concentrated much of its space development work on complex applications satellites and more powerful rockets. The nation's two main interests are satellites for remote sensing and communications used for weather pictures, disaster warnings and feeds to 552 television and 164 radio stations on the ground.
Here's a partial chronology:
  • 1963 - The first sounding rocket was launched Nov. 21 from TERLS.
