The invasion of the White Huns brought all this to an end, and northern India became fragmented, and was only reunified with the arrival of Muslims from the west. During this time, the south had been trading by sea with the Romans and Egyptians. It took some time for Muslim forces to forge a permanent presence in northern India: in the late 12th century, Muhammad of Ghori, who had built a powerbase in what is now the Punjab, rapidly expanded eastwards. His conquests led to the establishment of Delhi as a major center of political power and ultimately its position as the Indian capital. The next major influx after the Muslims was the Moghuls, who swept over the mountain passes from Central Asia in the 1520s and maintained effective control of the north until the mid-18th century.
Pakistan section). Since this time India has been a democratic republic, with the first proper elections taking place in 1951, and Hindu law has been modernized to a great extent, eradicating many of the old inequalities. Nonetheless, the caste system, which assigns an individual to a particular stratum in society from birth, has proved resilient to reform.

[Upload image] The people of India have had a continuous civilization since 2500 B.C. when the inhabitants of the Indus River Valley developed an urban culture based on commerce and sustained by agricultural trade. This civilization declined around 1500 B.C. probably due to ecological changes. During the second millennium B.C. pastoral Aryan-speaking tribes migrated from the northwest into the subcontinent. As they settled in the middle Ganges River Valley they adapted to antecedent cultures. The political map of ancient and medieval India was made up of myriad kingdoms with fluctuating boundaries. The first great empire in India was the Maurya empire in Northern India. Chandragupta Maurya expanded and strengthened the empire, defeating Alexander the Great's successor Selecus. The greatest king of the Maurya empire was his grandson Ashoka, who embraced and propagated Buddhism. In the 4th and 5th centuries A.D. northern India was unified under the Gupta Dynasty. During this period known as India's Golden Age Hindu culture and political administration reached new heights. Islam spread across the subcontinent over a period of 500 years. In the 10th and 11th centuries Turks and Afghans invaded India and established sultanates in Delhi. In the early 16th century descendants of Genghis Khan swept across the Khyber Pass and established the Mughal (Mogul) Dynasty which lasted for 200 years. From the 11th to the 15th centuries southern India was dominated by Hindu Chola and Vijayanagar Dynasties. During this time the two systemsthe prevailing Hindu and Muslimmingled leaving lasting cultural influences on each other.

Arab and European Conquests

India's extraordinary history and geography are inextricably interrelated. A meeting ground between the East and West, it was routinely invaded, while at the same time its natural isolation and magnetic religions allowed it to adapt to and absorb many of the peoples who penetrated its mountain passes.
Regardless of the many Persians, Greeks, Chinese nomads, Arabs, Portuguese, British and other raiders who conquered the land, local Hindu kingdoms invariably survived their depradations, living out their own sagas of conquest and collapse. All the while, these local dynasties built upon the roots of a culture well established since the time of the first invaders, the Aryans. In short, India has always been simply too big, too complicated, and too culturally subtle to let any one empire dominate it for long.
The Discovery of India's Most Ancient Civilization British engineers in the mid-1800's, busy constructing a railway line between Karachi and Punjab, found ancient, kiln-baked bricks along the path of the track. This discovery was treated at the time as little more than a curiosity, but archaeologists later revisited the site in the 1920's and determined that the bricks were over 5,000 years old. Soon afterward, two important cities were discovered: Harappa on the Ravi river, and Mohenjodaro on the Indus. The civilization that laid the bricks, one of the world's oldest, was known as the Indus. They had a written language and were highly sophisticated. Dating back to 3000 BC, they originated in the south and moved north, building complex, mathematically-planned cities. Some of these towns were almost three miles in diameter and contained as many as 30,000 residents. These ancient municipalities had granaries, citadels, and even household toilets.

But the British army left India ultimately in 1950. The Indians celebrate 26/1/1950 as the Republic Day of India. On this day the Indian constitution was adopted. Until its independence in 1947, other countries which neighbor India today; Pakistan, Bangladesh (formerly East Pakistan), Myanmar (formerly Burma) and distant places like Aden in present day Yemen; were all parts of British India and were all considered as India. Until then (including the British era) India was never one single country but a collection of kingdoms and authorities with no sense of unity. In this sense India as one single country is mainly a result of British rule. Before that the word India was not used to indicate the present day India, but any kingdom, culture or community that existed between present day Afganistan, in the west, up to China and Myanmar in the east. The earliest human activity in the Indian sub-continent can be traced back to the early, middle and late Stone Ages (400,000-200,000 BC). They are culturally diverse and religion plays an important role in each one's life. About 83 percent of the people practice Hinduism. Another 12 percent are Muslims, and millions of others are Christians, Sikhs, Buddhists, and Jains. Eighteen major languages and more than 1,000 minor languages and dialects are spoken in India. Though Hindi is the official language, English is also widely spoken. Arts, Culture and Music of India India has a rich cultural heritage that it is very proud of. The music and dance of the country is based on the Natya Shastra, a form of Sanskrit music and dance that was practiced during the 2nd century AD. The music can be divided into the North Indian Hindustani style and the South Indian Carnatic (Karnatak) style. Dance is also a major art form in India. The major classical dance forms include Bharata Natyam, Kathak, Manipuri, and Kathakali. As far as Indian art goes, its architecture, sculpture, and painting have developed many distinct styles over the centuries and is widely accepted all over the world. Most of the designs have religious touches to it. Flag of India The flag of India has three equal horizontal bands of saffron (subdued orange) at the top, white in the middle and green at the bottom. History
This compilation is dedicated to everyone who has made St. Stephen's College what it is today. As is evident from its size and content, this booklet is far from being a comprehensive history of the College. It attempts to evoke through vignettes the spirit of a renowned and distinguished institution. The compilers wish to thank, Mr Shankar Ghose, Mr Ranjit Bhatia, Dr Wilson, Mr Lawrence Paul, Dr Aditya Bhattacharjea, Mr Subarno Chatterjea, the computer lab assistants, the library staff, Arvind Ranganathan, Tarun Singh and Deepak Gehlaut(for trying to teach a novice to operate computers) and all the others for their encouragement and help. By the essential conditions of their life, by the circumstances of their history, by the continuity of their growth through political and religious revolutions, by the catholicity of sympathy in which they embrace every form of speculation and enquiry, by the happy discipline through which they combine reverence with freedom and enthusiasm with patience, the Universities are providentially fitted to train men who shall interpret the faith of the West to the East, and bring back to us new illustration of the one infinite and eternal Gospel.Nowhere does the spirit of England find a more complex expression, nowhere is it more easy, more natural to believe that the Mission of England will not be unaccomplished. PORTUGUESE GOA INDIA – HISTORY

If there is one thing that makes Goa different from other parts of India than it is its East-West symbiosis giving it a special historical and social niche. The history of Portuguese Goa India tells a sweet and sour story of colonial heritage, oppressive rulers, a glorious culture, and uneventful immediate past.
As a land with the identity of its own, Portuguese Goa India was brought into focus when it was liberated of Portugal from its oppressive rule of around 450 hundred years in 1961. Goa was captured and annexed to the Portuguese in 1510 following the urges of trade and demand of spices and also cottons and indigo. But, Goa has a history that starts much before Portugal even thought of Goa being where it is.
Goa - The Early History
Goa was coveted and ruled by a great number of Indian kingdoms and dynasties from the 4th century onwards. The first kingdom to rule Goa and Konkan were Bhojas, who were the feudatories of Ashoka in 4th and 5th centuries AD. The city of Chandrapur (present Chandor) was founded by Prince Chandraditya, son of Chalukya King Pulakesin from 566 to 597 A.D. after this, Goa was ruled consecutively by Silahara Dynasty, Kadamba Danasty, and finally Hoysalas from 1022 to 1342 A.D.

THE GLOBAL AFRICAN COMMUNITY NOTES FROM A BROTHER IN INDIA:
HISTORY AND HERITAGE By INIYAN ELANGO, M.D. Edited and Posted by
RUNOKO RASHIDI T he first thing those who enslaved the Black people did was to erase all records and memories of our great heritage and history. This is because a rootless people will always wallow in self-pity and self-destruction. For example, the first thing that was done by the Sinhalese (the majority people in Sri Lanka who find kinship with the North Indian Hindus, Sanskrit language and their Aryan heritage), when they started a civil war with Sri Lanka's minority Tamil people two decades ago, was to burn down the centuries old library in a city called Jaffna which housed priceless Tamil books which were hundreds of years old. The civil war still wages in Sri Lanka and the Tamil Tigers, Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), are fighting for "Tamil Eelam", a separate Tamil homeland for Tamils in Sri Lanka. So that is why I consider it very important to make our people very proud of themselves again because we are the owners of the richest and the oldest civilization and culture. We were civilized, cultured and humane when the Aryan hordes were plundering, killing and amusing themselves in barbarism all over Europe and Central Asia. I think you know about the erstwhile "Lemuria" continent which bridged the Indian sub-continent and Australia, where the pre-historic Tamil (Black) people lived. Much of Lemuria was lost to the sea during a massive oceanic upheaval. But the aborigines of Australia are supposed to be the descendants of the pre-historic Tamils. Much of the customs and the language of the aborigines of Australia is similar to those of the rural Tamil folk. Even the facial features of the Australian aborigines and the Melanesian people is very similar to that of Tamil "Pariah" (Dalit) people.

38. A Brief On The History Of India
History of india India s political history, india s origin.
http://www.embassyofindia.com/in_hist.htm
MAP FACT SHEET VISITNG INDIA India's History "India" is derived from the river Indus, along whose banks the Aryans from Central Asia came down over the Himalayas and into the Indo-Gangetic plain around 1500 BC. However, the first evidence of human settlement in the Indian sub-continent dates back to 6000 BC, and these settlements expanded around 3000 BC into what is today known as the Indus valley civilisation, which apparently flourished till the coming of the Aryans. Available archaeological evidence is insufficient, and the Indus script yet un-deciphered, to enable a detailed account of this period in Indian history, but there is enough to show that the Indus valley civilisation was highly urbanised, its cities marvels of town planning, based on agriculture and commerce and trading with contemporary Mesopotamia, Sumeria and Egypt. What is known as the medieval age of Indian history can be loosely termed the age of invasions, beginning with the Turks in the 11th century. The Turkish Sultanat gave way before the onslaught of the Mongols who established the great Mughal empire (1526 to 1857), which at its zenith stretched from today's Afghanistan to deep down into India's Southern peninsula. With Vasco de Gama's arrival at Calicut on India's western coast in 1498, the latter half of India's medieval era saw the Portuguese, the Dutch, the French and the British entering India from the sea, initially as traders and later as colonisers.
