Indian Animals Killed for Leather
While many Hindus still hold cows as sacred, most people look the other way as cows, buffaloes, and bullocks are killed for meat and leather. Many international retailers routinely use skins from cows slaughtered in India. The slaughter of cows is legal in only a few Indian states, which means that cattle marked for slaughter must travel by road in a death march for hundreds of miles to the few states where slaughter is legal. In 1999, PETA president Ingrid Newkirk led a team to India to investigate complaints received from caring Indian citizens about the treatment of cows, buffaloes, and other animals killed to meet the demand for leather in the West, particularly in the United States and the European Union. What the team found would disturb the most hard-hearted.
Newkirk's team included Manfred Karremann, a German photo-journalist who documented gentle old Indian bulls and other animals being goaded onto trucks designed for fewer than half their numbers. The team saw that the animals' legs were often broken and their necks painfully twisted to make more room inside the vehicles. Animals inadvertently smothered one another and gouged and blinded each other with their horns. Live animals struggled under the dead and dying for hours during long, hot journeys to the slaughterhouse. Some animals were made to walk between trucking points and were beaten and forced to move forward, even when totally exhausted, by having chili seeds rubbed into their eyes and by having their tails broken by handlers. At most slaughterhouses, animals who survived transport were dragged inside, where they were able to see others dying before they themselves were cut, skinned, and dismembered, often while still conscious.

Opium Trading in India;
almost a century old
By Our Correspondent,
Mumbai, October 16
The land is dry and unyielding under a blazing sun and for ages now local people have worked these fields with their eyes turned skyward, waiting for the rains. Their crop is a fragile one, sensitive to the whims of the unpredictable weather. It must be harvested carefully and quickly. Welcome to the harvests of India, one of the largest opium harvesting countries in the world. Tucked away in the remote interiors of North India, acres of poppy fields produce tons of precious opium that is perfectly legal and reported to be strictly regulated by their government. However some of the opium grown here ends up on the black market or is saved for the villagers’ personal use. India is said to be a transit route for illicit heroin, hashish, and morphine base from Afghanistan, Pakistan, Burma, and to a lesser extent, Nepal. Cannabis smuggled from Nepal is mainly consumed within India, but some makes its way to western destinations. Heroin seizures data during 2000 may point to increased illegal production of heroin within India from opium gum diverted from the licit fields. Some heroin locally produced from diverted opium gum was bound for the international market, including the United Kingdom and Sri Lanka. India is a transit area for heroin from Afghanistan and Pakistan and from Southeast Asia (Burma, Thailand, and Laos). Most heroin transiting India appears bound for Europe.

Indian soldiers lured by dollars
By Siddharth Srivastava
NEW DELHI - The first reports about the happening appeared in January. Now it is a phenomenon that has spread across the country, involving possibly thousands of people. In a very discreet operation, US and British security sub-contractors are seeking out Indian ex-servicemen known for their professionalism and discipline for deployment in Iraq.
Moves by the coalition forces to outsource security are a result of the alarming increase in casualties, with indications of the war dragging on for some time. Further, there is a less likelihood of an attack on an Indian, who mingles easily with the general population, and who is also generally considered friendly by Iraqis. For the retired lowly paid Indian soldier, the money being doled out is attractive and difficult to refuse.
Needless to say, the Indian personnel work under the direct command of United States and British forces. Most are deployed to perform security duties, such as guarding key installations like oil wells, refineries, food convoys and ports, as well as normal day-to-day duties around military camps. Though there is no involvement in direct combat, the situation in Iraq is fraught with risk, with some reports indicating that a few Indians might already have been injured.

India, Sri Lanka count the cost

PUNE - It is the saddest commentary that one of the world's worst human tragedies may actually have limited economic impact. Munich Re, the world's largest reinsurer, announced late last week that it expected its damage claims resulting from the tsunamis that hit Asia to be less than US$135 million. In a press statement issued last Tuesday, it said it did not expect claims related to the world's strongest earthquake in 40 years to change its forecast of 2004 profits of between $2.4 billion and $2.7 billion.
"Judging by the information it has received so far, the Munich Re Group expects its own burden to be limited, with a figure currently under [$135 million]," Munich Re said in the statement, adding that it needed more time for a better estimate. "This means that at present there is no reason to adjust the result forecast for the current business year," it said.

200. WaterAid
The Indian government is committed to change and has set ambitious targets to ensure all the rural population have safe water and sanitation by 2010.

India is a huge and diverse country with a population of over one billion people. Over 40% live in poverty with lower caste dalits, and increasingly women, making up the largest proportion of poor people. Population growth is rapid, particularly in urban areas due to migration from rural villages. To read more about India  click here In a country so large, there are vast numbers without sanitation and water: over 170 million don’t have access to safe water and 69% of the population (690 million people, 10 times the UK population) lack adequate sanitation. As a result 600,000 children under five die from diarrhoeal diseases every year. Since the late eighties, when WaterAid began working in India, it has developed practical techniques to set a standard of good practice for water, sanitation and hygiene projects.
Following a review in 2002 WaterAid has changed the direction of its work, shifting from its traditional focus in Southern India to the poorer states in the North to target some of India’s most vulnerable communities. The main office has now moved from Tiruchirapalli in Southern India to New Delhi, bringing WaterAid closer to policy makers in the sector, and two further regional offices have opened in Bhopal and Bhubaneswar, to coordinate the six new states WaterAid now operates in.  Over the coming years WaterAid will continue to implement its plan of reducing its commitments in the Southern Indian states and expanding its work in North India.
