Surveyors study whether islands shifted in quake
January 5, 2005 NEW DELHI The tsunami triggered by a massive undersea earthquake Dec. 26 not only washed away thousands of people living on India's coastlines, it also may have permanently altered India's geography. ADVERTISEMENT India's chief surveyor said that some islands in the Andaman and Nicobar archipelago, a group of about 550 islands stretching between Burma and Indonesia, may have shifted when the Earth shook. The surveyor, Prithvish Nag, said a team of geodetic surveyors has been sent to the islands ''to study how the contours may have changed or islands may have [been] shifted by the impact of the earthquake." ''This is a huge and time-consuming exercise to see the shift, the tilt, and the tectonic changes in the area," Nag said. Officials said it was important to assess the changes because of their potential impact on ocean shipping and because a possible northward shift in tectonic plates could affect a quake-prone region in northeastern India. Military officials confirmed that India's southernmost point in the Indian Ocean, a coral reef in the Nicobars called Indira Point, had vanished beneath the water. The island, about 86 miles from Sumatra, was hit by the full wrath of the tsunami.

PEOPLES
The racial, ethnic, religious and linguistic diversity together with the caste system complicates any analysis of the population. A 1991 survey identified 4,635 distinct people groups. More detail is given under the individual states. People Groups based on culture and caste rather than language are the more important for understanding India’s complexity. The Indo-Aryan invasion and conquest of India three millennia ago led to the marginalization of the original inhabitants (many of the tribal peoples of today), subjugation of much of the Dravidian population and the emergence of multiple mixed race groups (now backward castes). The caste system established Brahmin control over the majority. Fundamental to Hinduism, it pervades all religious and social structures in India. Caste discrimination is forbidden by the constitution, but is socially important for over 80% of the population. There are an estimated 6,400 castes. Each functions as a separate group because of the social barriers that separate them.

India's Western Ghats are blessed with an astonishing variety of wildlife. Unfortunately, human intrusion is increasingly threatening the last remaining habitats. Many species are already extremely close to extinction. Besides declining herds of wild elephants, visitors to the proposed Altaghat Resort and women's shelter might see some of the animals on this page. Most of the fauna and much of the flora is endangered. Our mission includes contributing to the preservation of these wonderful species.
The Nilgiri Langur has been hunted for its fur and supposed medicinal meat and organs. Its habitat is from 3000 to 7000 feet in southern India's Western Ghats. Here is an awesome Langur story!
Bonnet Macauque's are cute little guys common to southern India, and less threatened. They are very social and will eat anything they can lay their hands on. Click on the Macaque to hear them in the jungle!
The Sambar deer stands 1.6 meters or 5 feet tall at the shoulder. The Sambar is the largest Indian deer. They like to graze in cultivated areas. As a result some humans hunt them.
The Gaur or Indian bison are majestic animals that roam the hills and shaded groves of the Cardamon Hills. They can often be seen grazing at dusk. Their distinctive white socks give them away. Clouds of mosquitoes may follow them around!

MAP FACT SHEET VISITNG INDIA India's Geography With a total land area of 3.3 million square kilometres, 2933 kms wide and the 3214 kms long, the Indian sub-continent is set apart from the rest of Asia by the towering Himalayas to the north. From the Himalayas, one comes down into the Indo-Gangetic plain, then crosses over the Vindhyan mountains to enter the Deccan Peninsula, bounded by the Bay of Bengal to the south-east and the Arabian sea to the south-east, with the southern-most tip projecting into the Indian Ocean. The Deccan plateau is the oldest portion of India, geologically speaking, and is believed to have been part of a super-continent together with S. America, Africa, Australia and Antarctica. As the continents drifted apart, the moving Deccan plate collided with the Tibetan block of South Asia about 50 million years ago and the Himalayas up out of the sea and up against the rest of Asia. Over the years, the persistent pressure of the Deccan drifting northwards pushed the Himalayan mountains upwards, a process which geologists say is still continuing, causing earthquakes and tremors in the Himalayan ranges as the accumulated stress is released. As the Himalayas rise, they are also steadily being eroded by the three great rivers of Northern India - the Indus, the Ganges and the Brahmaputra. The alluvial soil brought down by these rivers filled up the vast depression between the Deccan plateau and the Himalayas and created what is the Indo-Gangetic plain today. Other rivers at work in India, transforming the land, include the Mahanadi, Godavari, Krishna, Kaveri and the Pennar which created the deltas and flood-plains of India's east coast, and the Narmada, Tapti, Sharavati, Netravati, Bharatapuzha, Periyar and the Pamba which did the same for the west coast.

August 13, 2003 View a gallery of Rajasaurus narmadensis , including a chart, illustration, and photos >> A new species of dinosaur was announced by Indian and American scientists today: a 30-foot (9-meter), horned carnivore that hunted other dinosaurs 65 million years ago. A reconstruction of the dinosaur's skull (see photo gallery ) may shed light on how the continents drifted into their present positions and what might have caused the extinction of the dinosaurs. When paleontologists Paul Sereno and Jeff Wilson arrived in India in 2001 to study a mixed collection of dinosaur bones gathered by Indian scientists 18 years earlier, they found the bones spread out on an office floor. Sifting through the collection, they separated out the bones of a theropod, or meat-eating dinosaur. When they found the center part of a skull, they recognized a horn resembling those of dinosaurs found in Madagascar. Their search continued, yielding a left hip, then a right hip, then a sacrum.

Updated May 4, 2004 When Lindsay Oaks went to Pakistan in the year 2000, there were so many vultures that he got bored looking at them. Now, three years later, the raptors are nearly gone. Within a few years, they may be extinct. The culprit appears to be a drug akin to aspirin and ibuprofen. In a study that sheds light on a decade-old mystery, Oaks, a veterinary microbiologist at Washington State University in Pullman, and colleagues link the vulture deaths to the recent and widespread use of diclofenac, a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug that has become a popular treatment for ailing livestock throughout the Indian subcontinent. Vultures, which once clouded the skies, were the subcontinent's carcass disposal system. When an animal dies, hide collectors remove the skin, leaving the rest for the birds. But over the last decade, populations of the Oriental white-backed vulture (
