    123. India The Melting Pot Of Cultural Diversity!
with 15 officially recognised languages, various styles of art, architecture, literature, music and dance, india has a fascinating culture.
    http://www.embassyofindia.com/in_cult.htm
MAP FACT SHEET VISITING INDIA India's Culture With about 800 dialects and 15 officially recognized languages, several religions including Hinduism, Islam, Christianity, Jainism, Buddhism, Sikhism, Zoroastrianism and Judaism, various styles of art, architecture, literature, music and dance, and several lifestyles from the urban and rural to the tribal, India is a melting pot of cultural diversity. Indian dance has an unbroken tradition of over 2000 years, with themes drawn from mythology, legends and classical literature. It also can be broadly divided into folk/tribal dances which have many regional variations, and the classical dances, which are based on ancient texts and have rigid rules of presentation. Some of the major classical dance traditions are Bharata Natyam, Kathak, Odissi, Manipuri, Kuchipudi, Mohiniattam and Kathakali. Indian literature can date its origins to the oral tradition of the Vedas and the great epics of India, which are still an integral part of daily life. Poetry, drama, fiction, non-fiction and all other literary styles have a substantial corpus in each of India's major languages and in quite a few dialects, while the oral tradition also continues through folk songs and dramas. Theatre in India also has ancient historical roots, though classical theatre is performed very rarely nowadays, having been overtaken by a vibrant tradition of folk theatre (including puppet and shadow theatre) and modern professional theatre, which draws not only dramas written in any Indian language but also on non-Indian theatre from Shakespeare to Chekov to Andrew Lloyd Webber, either in English or in translation.

Next SOUTH ASIAN HISTORY Pages from the history of the Indian Subcontinent Islam and the sub-continent - appraising its impact Perhaps no aspect of India's history excites more passion and violent disagreement than the evaluation of Islam's role in the sub-continent. On the one hand, the most extreme advocates of the 2-nation theory see the arrival of Islam as overwhelmingly positive - defending every gory invader or brutal conqueror that reached Indian soil - there are others who see the arrival of Islam as an even more destructive event for the people of the sub-continent than colonial rule. (See the article on the 2-nation theory for a comparison of India's Islamic period with colonial rule) . For Indians, this problem has been compounded by the impact of colonial rule, and its attempt to foster divisions and heighten tensions between India's different religious communities. A successful fight against colonial rule required the widest possible unity of the Indian people. This often meant that historical disputes between Hindu and Muslim scholars had to be muted. The fear of inciting communal riots or tensions and religious separatism weighed heavily on many historians. Partition caused such fears to linger on into the post-independence period as well. Because Muslims were a minority in India, there was a reluctance on the part of secular historians to critique the role of Islam in any way that could be perceived as 'negative'. Unfortunately this also led to an intellectual vacuum and historical confusion that has now been exploited by less scrupulous historians and even sheer myth-makers.

    The World
"So far as I am able to judge, nothing has been left undone, either by man or nature, to make India the most extraordinary country that the sun visits on his rounds. Nothing seems to have been forgotten, nothing overlooked." Mark Twain, from Following the Equator I t is impossible not to be astonished by India. Nowhere on Earth does humanity present itself in such a dizzying, creative burst of cultures and religions, races and tongues. Every aspect of the country presents itself on a massive, exaggerated scale, worthy in comparison only to the superlative mountains that overshadow it. Perhaps the only thing more difficult than to be indifferent to India would be to describe or understand India completely. Set apart from the rest of Asia by the supreme continental wall of the Himalayas, the Indian subcontinent touches three large bodies of water and is immediately recognizable on any world map. It is the huge, terrestrial beak between Africa and Indonesia. This thick, roughly triangular peninsula defines the Bay of Bengal to the east, the Arabian sea to the west, and the India Ocean to the south.

    Jain Art from India
The Peaceful Liberators By John Guy The exhibition presents before Western audiences the remarkable artistic achievement of Jainism and its contribution to world religion. The principal themes which found expression in the art of Jainism are presented, notably the role of the Jina image, the significance of the deities, the ritual and narrative role of the illustrated text, and the Jain cosmology as seen through cosmological paintings. The place of pilgrimage in the Jain tradition is illustrated through monumental pilgrimage paintings.
There is much in the historical development of Jain art which has parallels in the religious art of both Hinduism and Buddhism, but there are other aspects, particularly in relation to the role of the image in worship, which diverge fundamentally from the other traditional Indian religions. In the exhibition, stress is placed on the unique contribution of Jainism to the Indian religious and artistic tradition. Jainism
Jainism grew out of the teachings of a series of historical teachers who became "enlightened" and hence liberated beings, the most recent being Mahavira (c. 599-527 BC), the 24th

Objecting to the ongoing controversy over altering the status of the Taj Mahal from a government heritage property to a waqf, or charitable trust, one, Uttar Pradesh Tourism Minister Kaukab Hameed said he was apprehensive that tourist inflow into the world famous monument would be adversely affected. He said money was the main reason behind the waqf board's sudden interest in the 17th century mausoleum built by Mughal emperor Shahjahan for his wife Mumtaz Mahal.

Dear Visitor, Here goes a Sloka (couplet) from the Atharva Veda (one of the 4 Vedas - treatises on knowledge from ancient India) which embodies the true spirit of humanness expressed, not today, but four thousand years ago. We are the birds of the same nest,
    We may wear different skins,
    We may speak different languages,
We may believe in different religions,
We may belong to different cultures,
Yet we share the same home - OUR EARTH. Born on the same planet
    Covered by the same skies
    Gazing at the same stars
    Breathing the same air
We must learn to happily progress together
Or miserably perish together, For man can live individually, But can survive only collectively
It is this spirit of humanness that has been the undercurrent of existence in a part of the world known by many names like Aryavarta, Jambudwipa, Bharatvarsha, Hindustan or India. This spirit has also prevailed in many other parts of the world where the right thinking of humankind has prevailed. Shiva-Nataraja - the Indian God of Dance.

Music and Dance of Rajasthan The music and dances of Rajasthan are heady, exciting, hypnotic and compelling… and very much a part of the eternal appeal of this strange and wondrous land. They constitute the very warp and weft of life in Rajasthan-indeed the state has a very vibrant, highly evolved tradition of performing arts carefully nurtured and sustained over the centuries. Cuisine of Rajasthan 'The land of Princes', as Rajasthan is called boasts of many a fine kitchen - both within the palaces and outside. Princely kitchens have produced many an incomparable and exotic delicacy of shikar meat. The smoked Rajasthani kebab - sule - is bare-be-cued in about a dozen different ways. At the other extreme is Maheshwari Cuisine or the vegetarian cuisine of the Maheshwars of the Marwar or the Jodhpur area. Fairs and Festivals of Rajasthan Rajasthan, a barren desert land, becomes resplendent with the colors of joyous celebration and gay abandon of its fairs and festivals. There is a fair for every religious occasion, every change of season and every harvest, all invariably a reflection of the genius of their arts and crafts and their ascetic refinement. Rajasthan has all the usual Hindu and Muslim festivals, some celebrated with special local fervor as well as a number of festivals of its own. The exact dates, determined by the lunar calendar have specific religious significance.

    Hummingbird buys RedDot
The consolidation continues. Hummingbird , with its strength in Document Management has announced the acquisition of European RedDot solutions. RedDot has its strength in Web Content Management. This gives Hummingbird and RedDot an opportunity to address the ECM space and cross sell to each other's customers.
However, true benefits will only accrue if the two vendors actually integrate the products tightly. This means having a common user repository, common content repository and some kind of workflow interoperability. Otherwise, the two would just be like desparate products, with companies having to duplicate data and users, which defeats any advantages that could be got by a single ECM product.
