Gandhi Statue Dedication Ceremony at Hermann Park
Houston
October 2nd, 2004 In a solemn ceremony Houston Mayor Bill White and Ambassador Ronen Sen unveiled a life size bronze statue of Mahatma Gandhi at the prestigious Hermann Park in downtown Houston. Among other dignitaries were former Mayor Lee P. Brown, who initially approved the project, US Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee and Consul General Skand Tayal. The ceremony was attended by over 1000 Houstonians. In a moving tribute to Mahatma Gandhi, Chief Guest Ambassador Ronen Sen referred to the spiritual link between the Mahatma and Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. He recalled the historic Salt March at Dandi and its resonance with the courageous Montogemry Bus Boycott against racial segregation in United States. Ambassador Sen emphasized the commonality of the principles and values followed by these two great reformers and their subsequent adoption by President Nelson Mandela in the struggle against apartheid. He said that the Mahatma symbolizes India's unity in diversity and, for the world, the Mahatma was an embodiment of peace and non-violence. Ambassador Sen thanked the city of Houston and the community for coming together to install the statue in the "serene surroundings" of the Hermann Park. Mayor Bill White in his remarks praised the apostle of peace Mahatma Gandhi and spoke highly about his contributions to tolerance and non-violence and their relevance to the mankind in today's world. Former Mayor Lee P. Brown remembered the influence of Mahatma Gandhi on Martin Luther King and how it guided him to adopt non-violence as the means to achieve his goal of racial equality. U.S. Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee referred to the strength of peaceful non-cooperation in the struggle against injustice.

The invasion of the White Huns brought all this to an end, and northern India became fragmented, and was only reunified with the arrival of Muslims from the west. During this time, the south had been trading by sea with the Romans and Egyptians. It took some time for Muslim forces to forge a permanent presence in northern India: in the late 12th century, Muhammad of Ghori, who had built a powerbase in what is now the Punjab, rapidly expanded eastwards. His conquests led to the establishment of Delhi as a major center of political power and ultimately its position as the Indian capital. The next major influx after the Muslims was the Moghuls, who swept over the mountain passes from Central Asia in the 1520s and maintained effective control of the north until the mid-18th century.
Pakistan section). Since this time India has been a democratic republic, with the first proper elections taking place in 1951, and Hindu law has been modernized to a great extent, eradicating many of the old inequalities. Nonetheless, the caste system, which assigns an individual to a particular stratum in society from birth, has proved resilient to reform.

          People and Culture
India is the world's second most populous nation (after China). Its ethnic composition is complex, but two major strains predominate: the Aryan, in the north, and the Dravidian, in the south. India is a land of great cultural diversity, as is evidenced by the enormous number of different languages spoken throughout the country. Although Hindi (spoken in the north) and English (the language of politics and commerce) are used officially, more than 1,500 languages and dialects are spoken. The Indian constitution recognizes 15 regional languages (Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada, Kashmiri, Malayalam, Marathi, Oriya, Punjabi, Sanskrit, Sindhi, Tamil, Telugu, and Urdu). Ten of the major states of India are generally organized along linguistic lines.

Healthcare in India Culture of India The Indian culture has enjoyed an international reputation for the brass and bell metal work. The technology of metalworking had been entrenched in the Indian Culture by 2500 B.C. This technology then was manifested in myriad exquisite and sturdy images and icons. These images and icons are still found in temples. They are still being produced in household niches such as lamps, platters and other items required for acts of worship. The metals being used for these products are mostly gold, silver, copper, brass, bronze, and other mixed metals and alloys. Infact the world-famous dancing figure of Nataraja, which is a strong element of the Indian Culture, is a work in the Chola tradition. This piece of art epitomizes the achievement of art in the Indian Culture.
