Approximately "Real World" Learning with the Hybrid Model
by Rachel Spilka,
University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee
Most workplace professionals write documents in a fairly mature way. They typically write:
  • Independently or with collaborators, without direct or constant supervision; With frequent interaction with team members at remote locations, and not just with those at their own division or company; With computers and other electronic equipment; and With the freedom to make important decisions about project and time management, such as determining when and how to interact with others, how to collaborate with irresponsible writing partners, how to resolve unexpected problems that arise, and how to meet deadlines despite mishaps and obstacles.
How can instructors of business and professional writing prepare students for the relative freedom and independence of this kind of thinking and writing? Several years ago, I discovered the value of using the hybrid model to teach business and technical writing. Up to that time, while teaching in traditional classrooms, I wasn't able to simulate writing situations in workplace settings, or to expose students to the complexities of workplace writing. Sure, like many instructors, I tried innovative teaching methods such as routinely sending students out to "the real world" to conduct research or work on short-term service projects for actual clients. But my students still tended to work on projects with too much instructor oversight and supervision, to collaborate mostly in person with writers they knew well instead of collaborating from a distance with writers they barely knew, and to manage projects with regular instructor or peer input, instead of mostly on their own.

Introduction to Hybrid Courses
by Carla Garnham and Robert Kaleta,
Learning Technology Center,
University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee
What is a hybrid course? Hybrid courses are courses in which a significant portion of the learning activities have been moved online, and time traditionally spent in the classroom is reduced but not eliminated. The goal of hybrid courses is to join the best features of in-class teaching with the best features of online learning to promote active independent learning and reduce class seat time. Using computer-based technologies, instructors use the hybrid model to redesign some lecture or lab content into new online learning activities, such as case studies, tutorials, self-testing exercises, simulations, and online group collaborations.
What is the Hybrid Course Project? During 1999-2001, the University of Wisconsin System Curricular Redesign Grant Program funded a collaborative project involving UW-Milwaukee and four UW-College campuses (Rock County, Sheboygan, Washington, and Waukesha). Coordinated by UWM's Learning Technology Center, the project developed a Web resource of hybrid courses, created a model faculty development program for teaching hybrid courses, and supported 17 faculty in their efforts to design, develop, and teach their first hybrid courses.

EColabor is designed to address problems in communication, agreement, and change management in document production, which are reportedly significant but rarely addressed. Based on the Inquiry Cycle model, EColabor supports stakeholders in systematically managing their documents. EColabor records all the processes of elaborating documents in shared hypermedia and provides comprehensive support for utilizing these records, applying multimedia and CSCW technologies to the document production process. Data and Activities for Solar Learning
    National Science Teaching Standards
One of the primary goals of creating this compact disk was to offer educators a highly flexible data set of actual telescopic images studied by scientists in an effort to improve our understanding of solar dynamics. We feel this data set, along with the arranged modular investigations and literature, offer a unique, yet authentic, view of our sun. Due to the long duration of archived images, users can witness many of the fundamental solar behaviors and characteristics. We believe that there is no other resource available for teachers that has as thorough a compilation of solar image files, covering one full solar magnetic cycle of 22 years. The flexibility of the data, and accompanying movie, make it useful in a variety of subject classrooms as well as for different age groups. Instructors can use the images to casually supplement existing curriculum; or, for more formal settings as in independent research projects. Teachers have the opportunity to administer one of the prearranged investigations or simply use the data to allow students to conduct their own scientific inquiry. Those wishing to incorporate this data set and activities will find that it addresses many of the national science standards. Both

The Higher Education Funding Council for England has commissioned the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education to carry out a second programme of reviews of a sample of Foundation Degrees (FDs) in England in the academic year 2004-05. The major purposes of the review process are:
    • to encourage improvements in the quality of FDs through the publication and sharing of good practice to provide effective and accessible public information on the standards achieved by students on FDs to provide public information on the quality of student learning opportunities in FDs to secure value from public investment in FDs.
The findings from the reviewers' lines of enquiry result in a published report containing two threshold judgements. In the case of programmes where there are students who have graduated, the report contains judgements on the confidence, or otherwise, the reviewers have in:

    Preparing for the First Day
The impression you make on the first day of class will set the tone for the rest of the course. I this session, you will build a "toolbox" of information and skills to prepare for the first day of class. Session topics will include teacher-student expectations in the classroom, setting the tone for the course, and building a positive rapport with students.
    How Students Learn
Understanding the learning process is key to good teaching. In this session, we will look at some relevant findings from cognitive science and discuss how to use that knowledge to help facilitate learning in the classroom.
How Understanding Learning Styles can Improve Teaching and Learning
Knowing how your students learn is key to helping you design and conduct a successful class. You will explore differences in learning and teaching styles, how to determine appropriate classroom approaches based on those styles, and how to help motivate students.
