Post-Impressionism
Post-Impressionism was a diverse art movement that engulfed the European art community in the latter part of the 19th century. Post-Impressionism constitutes a continuation of the Impressionist effort to portray painting in a differential and unbridled manner. The paramount figures to emerge in the movement include: Paul Cezanne, Vincent Van Gogh, Paul Signac, Georges Seurat, Paul Gauguin, and Pierre Bonnard. The Post-Impressionists each developed individual styles that supported, or eroded the fabricated principles of the Impressionist movement. History Post-Impressionism emerged in 1886 with the official cessation of the Impressionist movement. Before the movement's decline, the Impressionists had successfully conquered a generation of skeptical critics. Although the movement lasted less than a decade, the Impressionist school had indirectly challenged and inspired their successors (the Post-Impressionists) to venture into new artistic expression similar to the way they had. 1886, with the final decline of the Impressionists, the Post-Impressionists surfaced as the primary art movement in Paris. When they emerged however, they did not support the Impressionists naturalistic form as the Impressionists may have wanted, but the Post-Impressionists ironically rejected their teachings in the same way that the Impressionist had done. The Impressionists had unknowingly passed the same rebellious quality that had made their movement a success.

94. The Development Of Southern California Impressionism, Essay By Jean Stern
By the early twentieth century, Post impressionism had evolved into By 1900,impressionism had become the most popular art style among American artists
http://www.tfaoi.com/aa/2aa/2aa643.htm
The Development of Southern California Impressionism by Jean Stern The following essay was written in 1982 by Jean Stern, then Director of the Petersen Galleries in Beverly Hills, CA. It is an essay written for, and included in, the book titled Plein Air Painters of California: The Southland , by Ruth Lilly Westphal and published by Westphal Publishing, Irvine, California, ISBN 0-9610520-0-7 W ith the advantage of retrospect of over eighty years, the Southern California Impressionist style, or plein air style, can be traced as a concurrent phase of the American Impressionist movement and, thus, as a direct offshoot of the French Impressionist style, although decidedly tempered and qualified. The style was established in California at a time when Impressionism was just becoming acceptable in general throughout the United States. The practitioners were a closely knit group of professional artists who painted together and were active in numerous artistic societies, on the East Coast as well as in California. They exchanged ideas and were open to outside influences . The diverse group of artists who came to Southern California did so for a variety of reasons: a bright sunny climate that is ideal for out-of-doors painting, an opportunity to settle in a fresh environment, a need to escape tight restrictions of the Eastern art milieu. it was a reasoned decision calculated to improve their art. A few artists came later in their careers, some because of failing health; others stayed after brief visits. In any event, once in California, most artists recognized the potential benefit to their art and either settled permanently or established part-time studios. After coming to Southern California, these artists did not sever commercial relations with the East but continued to participate in Eastern art exhibits and competitions. They were products of the American art scene and remained a part of it in spite of the vast geographical separation.

99. Post Impressionism
Post impressionism is a term which is less easy to define than impressionism . Vincent first tried to be an art dealer, working in his uncle s gallery.
http://www.eyeconart.net/history/postimpressionism.htm
Post Impressionism Georges Seurat
Sunday Afternoon on the Island of Grande Jatte, 1884-85 Post Impressionism is a term which is less easy to define than Impressionism. Though the impressionists differed in personal styles and favorite subjects, one thing which was consistent between the artists was their interest in the transitory effects of light and spontaneous compositions. Though the post-impressionists are also concerned with light, it is not as much of a central concern, and their personal styles differ greatly. When we look at the works of Georges Seurat, for example, it is obvious that he is concerned with the effects of light, but his compositions definitely do not evoke a sense of the spontaneous moment. First and foremost, he is noted for his invention of a method of applying paint in small dots of color. He called this method divisionism, but the term pointillism is more commonly used today. Seurat developed this method in response to his understanding of scientific theories about the perception of light and color. It had recently been discovered that light can be measured in particles as well as wavelengths. It had further been concluded that when we see the various colors of the light spectrum, our eyes perceive the various particles, but the mind mixes them into distincly different colors. Seurat's paintings are a visual experiment of this idea, placing tiny dots of various colors side by side, and allowing the viewer's mind "mix" them. When perceived up close, they are a dizzying array of vibrant colors. When seen from a distance, the image comes together in a more muted palette, for the colors which are placed side by side become mixed.
