Post-Impressionism
Post-Impressionism follows Impressionism. The artists involved were influenced by Impressionism although their work shares few similarities. Disinterested in recording light and color phenomena, Post-Impressionism is characterized by bright color, sharp, often outlined edges. In pursuit of individual goals, theories, and interests, they don't work or exhibit together. Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (too-LOOZ-loe-trek) Fast Facts Famous as an artist and as an aristocrat in Paris, Toulouse-Lautrec traveled and associated with the intellectuals of the era. Feeling physically grotesque, Lautrec removed himself from a traditional life in favor of the Parisian underworld from which his unromantic contemporary subjects were drawn. He painted social taboos and sordid truths of Parisian life in a straightforward unsentimental manner. The resulting work ironically elevates low life to high art. The general public found his work distasteful and shocking! He was influenced by Japanese prints and the Impressionist, Degas. Quadrille at the Moulin Rouge, 1892

In "Mr. Bennett and Mrs. Brown," Woolf writes that "on or about December, 1910, human character changed" (194 in Virginia Woolf Reader , ed. Mitchell A. Leaska). This was roughly the time of the first Post-Impressionist exhibition in London, "Manet and the Post-Impressionists," arranged by Roger Fry, Clive Bell, and Desmond MacCarthy. Mark Hussey has a good discussion of the term "Post-Impressionist," including a description of that exhibition and comments and cross-references regarding the December 1910 quotation. Below are some links on post-impressionist art, including images and explanations: Hutchinson Encyclopedia http://www.tiscali.co.uk/reference/encyclopaedia/hutchinson/m0012573.html Includes this explanation: "The term [post-impressionist] was coined in 1910 by the British art critic Roger Fry, in the title of Manet and the Post-Impressionists, an exhibition he organized at the Grafton Galleries, London. Fry also organized a second post-Impressionist exhibition two years later. The artists who were best represented at the first exhibition were Cezanne, Gauguin, and van Gogh, and these three are regarded as the most important and influential of the post-Impressionists, closely followed by Georges Seurat." Impressionism, Post-Impressionism, and the Eucalyptus School in Southern California by Nancy Dustin Wall Moure The following essay was written in 1982 by Nancy Dustin Wall Moure, then Assistant Curator of American Art at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. It is an essay written for, and included in, the book titled Plein Air Painters of California: The Southland , by Ruth Lilly Westphal and published by Westphal Publishing, Irvine, California, ISBN 0-9610520-0-7 Impressionism Can the terms "impressionism" and "post-impressionism:' labels originally applied to certain French art movements of the nineteenth century, be appropriately applied to any Southern California landscape movement of the early twentieth? The term impressionism first applied by the hostile critic Louis Leroy to a canvas by Claude Monet in 1874, has come to be used very loosely. In simplest terms, French Impressionism was a very small, avant-garde movement whose members experimented for a brief number of years (c. 1870-c. 1880) with painterly ways to capture light on canvas. Since Southern California's first professional artists didn't arrive until the 1890's, no Southern California artist can qualify as an Impressionist on the basis of time alone. The French Impressionists' innovations in color and brushwork advanced art over that of their immediate predecessors. No Southern California Impressionist can make that claim. Lastly, Impressionism implies a certain aesthetic primarily the capture of light on canvas through the use of pure, unmuted, bright colors and such stylistic and compositional elements as a shallow, two-dimensional space, occupied by flattened forms, an uptilted picture plane resulting in a high horizon, off-center focal points, preference for dynamic diagonals rather than static verticals and horizontals, and the juxtaposition of decorative patterns and textures. The Impressionists favored landscape, some of which included architecture followed by figure studies and still lifes. Human figures, when treated, most often came from the upper classes and were primarily portrayed in leisure, urban activities.

Post-Impressionism is an umbrella term used to describe a variety of artists who were influenced by Impressionism but took their art in different directions.
There is no single well-defined style of Post-Impressionism, but in general it is less casual and more emotionally charged than Impressionist work.
The classic Post-Impressionists are Paul Cezanne, Paul Gauguin, Vincent van Gogh, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec and Henri Rousseau. The Pointillists and Les Nabis are also generally counted among the Post-Impressionists.

Images COURSE CONTENT AND APPROACH
Art 222: Impressionism and Post-Impressionism is concerned with critically encountering art in the later nineteenth century in Europe (c. 1860s-1900). Artists, critics, and art historians have defined this period and place in terms of imbricated styles and movements: Realism, Impressionism, Post-Impressionism, Neo-Impressionism, Symbolism, Aestheticism, Art Nouveau, etc. As we examine artistic production in this period, one of our goals will be to "deconstruct" these labels in order to identify and investigate the complexities of artistic conditions and social-political circumstances to which these labels refer.
On a day-to-day basis, we will explore the complex field of interpretation in the visual arts with an emphasis on testing different critical strategies. We will do this by combining intensive looking at works with discussion of significant accounts critics and historians have proposed and debated. Our daily practice will be informed by several overarching themes or propositions, such as:
1. How conceptions of change and modernity challenged painting both as an art medium and as a social production (in both instances painting understood as having its own established conventions and traditions.)

Image of Impression, Sunrise at www.artchive.com/ftp_site.htm , Mark Harden, mharden@texas.net March 2000. Email message. Impressionism was an art style that began in France during the 1870’s. Impressionism presents an immediate impression of an object or event. Impressionists tried to show what the eye saw at first glance, rather than what the artist felt or knew about the subject. The painting made by Claude Monet on the right is said to be one of the first painted in what became the Impressionist style. The name, Impressionism, comes from the painting's title: Impression, Sunrise Impressionists tried to paint light as it appeared to the eye when it reflected from the surface of an object. They created this effect by applying paint in small dashes of color. The artists would work outside in natural light to see exactly how the light would appear on their canvas. An Impressionist Eye: Painting and Sculpture from the Philip and Janice Levin Foundation This summer, Cincinnati will be treated to art by some of the best-known artists of all time as the Taft Museum of Art presents An Impressionist Eye: Painting and Sculpture from the Philip and Janice Levin Foundation . This outstanding collection includes such beloved artists as Edgar Degas, Claude Monet, Camille Pissarro, Pierre Bonnard, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, and Edouard Vuillard. In addition to tracing the distinct personal taste of two private collectors, An Impressionist Eye offers a captivating look at an intensely innovative period of nineteenth-century European art. The exhibition highlights three groups of canvases-images of women, interiors and still lifes, and leisure and country scenes-and a group of sculptures. The earliest work in the exhibition is Camille Corot's Portrait of a Girl , the first of a group of paintings of female figures that includes a dancer by Degas, a bather by Renoir, and Vuillard's Woman with a Hat Among the most beautiful of the intimate interior scenes in the collection are three Vuillard paintings. These form the core of the group of interior views that also include works by Bonnard and Berthe Morisot. Complementing the interiors are several still lifes, including Monet's
