What are Dental Implants?
Dental implants are metal posts or frames that are surgically positioned into the jawbone beneath your gums. Once in place, they allow your dentist to mount replacement teeth onto them. How do Dental Implants Work? Because implants fuse to your jawbone, they provide stable support for artificial teeth. Dentures and bridges For some people, ordinary bridges and dentures are simply not comfortable or even possible, due to sore spots, poor ridges or gagging. In addition, ordinary bridges must be attached to teeth on either side of the space left by the missing tooth. An advantage of implants is that no adjacent teeth need to be prepared or ground down to hold your new replacement tooth/teeth in place. To receive implants, you need to have healthy gums and adequate bone to support the implant. You must also commit to keeping these structures healthy. Meticulous

Placing Dental Implants
When you get implants, more than one dental professional may treat you. The implants will be placed in your jawbone by a surgeon (an oral surgeon or a periodontist). A prosthodontist or general dentist will make your crowns, bridges or dentures, which will look like natural teeth. The surgeon will coordinate your treatment with your general dentist or prosthodontist to decide what implants to use, how many implants you need and where they should be placed. Because there are different types and manufacturers of implant devices, the approach your dentists use may differ from the description presented here. The following describes the steps that a dentist typically takes when placing an implant. Before Placing an Implant Not all people are good candidates to get dental implants. A person who is most suitable is someone who is in good health, has healthy gums, and has enough bone in his or her jaw to allow an implant to be placed in the jawbone. To determine if you are suitable to get an implant, you will have to be examined by a dental professional. Some people are interested in getting implants to replace teeth that have been missing for a number of years. Others may need implants to replace teeth that were extracted recently because of severe decay, periodontal (gum) disease, infection or injury. In some cases, the teeth can be extracted and the implant placed at the same time. However, if you have a severe infection in a tooth root or your gums, your dentist may wait a few months after removing the teeth to allow the area to heal.

What are dental implants? A dental implant is a titanium fixture that is implanted in the jaw. It can replace a single tooth or it can be a support for a bridge or a denture. Who is a candidate for dental implants? Anyone in reasonable health who wants to replace missing teeth. You must have enough bone in the area of the missing teeth to provide adequate anchorage for the implants. Most people today are potential candidates for dental implants to replace a single missing tooth, small bridges or removable partial and full dentures. What is the success rate of dental implants? This depends on where the implants are placed and their function, as well as how well they are cleaned at home after they are completed. Most studies show success rates of at least 90%. Why are dental implants so popular?

Implants are permanent fixtures, embedded in the jaw to provide anchors for the replacement of teeth, or the stabilisation of dentures.
This group of photos above show implants replacing back teeth, thus restoring excellent chewing function.
Due to Mr Appleyard's extensive Oral Surgery and Implant training, surgical procedures can be offered within the practice, or at any of the Hospitals with which he is fully accredited. Sedation is available for office based procedures.
Here we see an excellent example of an implant replacement for a missing front tooth (and also some crowns on the side teeth). The benefit of implants is that no other teeth are cut or involved in the replacement of the tooth. They are highly predictable and the long-term success rate for implants is over 90%. They are cost comparative to a bridge, but better in that they do not involve other teeth. That is, with a bridge, if one tooth fails, the whole unit may be jeopardised. In the case of implants, each tooth stands alone.

Dental Implants Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) Is there another way I can have a tooth replaced other than a bridge? Return to Top What is involved in placing implants? First, surgery is performed to place the anchor. Surgery can take up to several hours, and up to six months may be required for the bone to grow around the anchor and firmly hold it in place. Some implants require a second surgery in which a post is attached to connect the anchor to the replacement teeth. With other implants, the anchor and post are already attached and are placed at the same time. After the gums have had several weeks to heal, the next step is begun. The artificial teeth are made and fitted to the post portion of the anchor. Because several fittings may be required, this step can take one to two months to complete.

Having dental implants put in is a two-step process: first, support posts are attached to the jaw bone; after the tissue heals around them, an artificial tooth is fastened to the support post, completing the dental implants. Springfield dentist Dr. Elfman, although he does not perform the post implant process, is able to provide his patients with the artificial tooth portion. To ensure that it is as realistic as possible, Dr. Elfman will take the time to ensure that this crown matches the size, shape and color of the surrounding teeth. Implants
Loss of teeth, followed by a successive reduction in jawbone, results in a constant deterioration in the stability of loose dentures. In addition, many patients are afflicted by a severe loss of self-confidence, reduction in chewing and speech function. Altogether, the loss of teeth can have a dramatic effect upon a patient's overall medical and dental well being. If you have loose teeth from gum disease, are uncomfortable with your dentures, or your smile reveals missing teeth, you may want to consider dental implants. Dental implants are substitutes for the root(s) of a missing natural tooth or teeth. They can support a single crown, a series of crowns, a removable partial denture, or a complete denture. Dental Implants result in local and total rehabilitation. With them, people are rediscovering the comfort and confidence to eat, speak, laugh and enjoy life.
To provide you with a better understanding of dental implants, we have integrated the module you see to the right with our website. Many of the frequently asked questions pertaining to dental implants are discussed. Case studies, video testimonials, and a printable brochure are also available through the module.

For most patients, the placement of dental implants involves two surgical procedures. First, implants are placed within your jawbone. For the first three to six months following surgery, the implants are beneath the surface of the gums gradually bonding with the jawbone. You should be able to wear temporary dentures and eat a soft diet during this time. At the same time, your dentist is forming new replacement teeth.
