Dental Implants
What are dental implants?
An alternative to dentures, dental implants (small dental appliances that are inserted into the upper and lower jaws) help to restore the mouth that has little or no non-restorable teeth. Dental implants are slowly replacing dentures used by some people, as they provide many advantages of traditional dentures. Advantages of implants over dentures:
For some people, particularly persons with loose or poor fitting dentures due to flat ridges, or persons with multiple missing teeth who need support for crowns and bridges, implants may be considered a more appropriate alternative to fix the appearance of missing teeth than dentures. According to the American Academy of Implant Prosthodontics, implants help to accomplish the following:
  • reduce movement of dentures, bridges, and/or crowns

24. Welcome To Van Ness Oral Surgery And Implantology Center
Dr. Tolstunov has been teaching Implant dentistry at the University of the Pacific, in the Bay Area on the topics of Implant dentistry and oral surgery.
http://www.sforalsurgeon.com/implants.html
Dental Implants (with bone grafts) provide a permanent replacement of missing teeth and associated Oral structures, prevent bone loss from non-use atrophy, and preserve adjacent teeth from destruction. Implant teeth look, feel and function like natural teeth. The person who has lost teeth regains the ability to eat virtually anything and can smile with confidence, knowing that teeth appear natural and that facial contours will be preserved. The implants themselves are tiny titanium posts which are placed into the jawbone where teeth are missing. The bone bonds with the titanium, creating a strong foundation for artificial teeth. In addition, implants can help preserve facial structure, preventing the bone deterioration which occurs when teeth are missing. Dental Implants are changing the way people live! With them, people are rediscovering the comfort and confidence to eat, speak, laugh and enjoy life. Dr. Tolstunov has received extensive training in Oral/Dental Implantology. In 2003, after taking vigorous examination, he became Diplomate of the American Board of Oral Implantology/Implant Dentistry , the highest professional achievement in the subspecialty of Dentistry, Implant Dentistry. In 2004, after taking a comprehensive examination, Dr. Tolstunov was awarded a status of

All possible measures should be taken to preserve and maintain your teeth because the loss of a single tooth can have a major impact upon your dental health and appearance. However, it is still sometimes necessary to remove a tooth. Here are some of the reasons why a tooth may need to be extracted.
  • Severe Decay Advanced periodontal (gum) disease Infection or abcess Orthodontic correction Malpositioned teeth Fractured teeth or roots Impacted teeth (mainly wisdom teeth)
There are certain risks associated with any surgery. Pain, bleeding, permanent numbness, broken root tips and bone are several of the possible risks. Dr. Howell will explain any associated risks prior to surgery but it is important that you realize that though we take every possible precaution to reduce these risks, you either accept the possiblility of the risks or you may elect not to have the surgery.

Here is a list of common problems that are treated by oral surgery: Tooth loss: When a patient loses a tooth from disease or injury, a dental implant can be placed into the mouth.  This is an alternative to removable dentures, and can be more natural looking.  A dental implant must be anchored into the jawbone for stability, so ideal patients must be healthy, hygienic, and have good bone density.

Wisdom teeth, or third molars, do not always erupt properly when they decide to make an appearance. It's wise to get an early opinion on getting wisdom teeth pulled before they cause pain, swelling, infection, caries and gum disease.
