Impeachment
Most states also provide for impeachment of judges. State impeachment methods tend to follow the federal form, and like the federal system, it is used relatively rarely. One recent high-profile case occurred in New Hampshire in 2000, when the New Hampshire House of Representatives leveled impeachment charges against Supreme Court Chief Justice David Brock and two associate justices. The House impeached Chief Justice Brock on grounds that he had engaged in various forms of improper behavior, but did not impeach the associate justices. The Senate declined to convict Chief Justice Brock.
Impeachment as a Political Weapon
It is relatively rare for any federal official, including judges, to be impeached. However, threats of impeachment are not especially rare, particularly when members of Congress disagree with a particular decision by a federal judge. Such calls for impeachment may be used to try to influence pending or future decisions in particular types of cases.
From the founding of the United States, efforts to impeach judges have at times been based on political, rather than legal, standards. The case of Supreme Court Associate Justice Samuel Chase is a prime example of the danger of political battles affecting the impeachment process. Justice Chase was an ardent

Clinton's lawyers get 30 hours to make case against impeachment
Senators start talking about procedures for possible trial
WASHINGTON (AllPolitics, December 6) President Bill Clinton's attorneys will have 30 hours on Tuesday and Wednesday to make their case to the House Judiciary Committee that he shouldn't be impeached for his role in the Monica Lewinsky affair. On Sunday afternoon, the White House issued a statement accepting that schedule, which was put forward by the Judiciary Committee earlier in the day. But the statement made it clear that White House was not happy that the committee refused to give Clinton's lawyers four days to present his case, as they had requested Friday. "The Independent Counsel (Ken Starr) spent four years and $40 million investigating the president. The committee is spending four months doing the same. Our request for just four days has now been cut in half," the statement said. "Nevertheless, we will work to defend the president despite these restrictions."
Lott says he now expects Senate trial
On Sunday, senators on both sides of the political aisle said the time has come for the Senate to consider what procedures it will use to try Clinton if the full House of Representatives approves any articles of impeachment.

June 17, 2005 Ahh, Democrats ... They're So Cute When They Play Make-Believe Dana Milbank, of all people, notes the folly of a handful of Congressional Democrats yesterday in pretending to hold a committee hearing on articles of impeachment for George Bush. Just like little girls having a tea party, the Democrats brought in realistic-looking props and played their parts just as if the meeting was real. It was so cute In the Capitol basement yesterday, long-suffering House Democrats took a trip to the land of make-believe. They pretended a small conference room was the Judiciary Committee hearing room, draping white linens over folding tables to make them look like witness tables and bringing in cardboard name tags and extra flags to make the whole thing look official. Rep. John Conyers Jr. (D-Mich.) banged a large wooden gavel and got the other lawmakers to call him "Mr. Chairman." He liked that so much that he started calling himself "the chairman" and spouted other chairmanly phrases, such as "unanimous consent" and "without objection so ordered." The dress-up game looked realistic enough on C-SPAN, so two dozen more Democrats came downstairs to play along.

Senate moves forward on impeachment trial
Lawmakers put off decision on witnesses until after opening statements
January 8, 1999
Web posted at: 6:37 p.m. EST (2337 GMT) WASHINGTON (AllPolitics, January 8) The Senate unanimously approved a road map Friday for continuing the impeachment trial of President Bill Clinton. With opening arguments set to begin next Thursday, all 100 senators gathered in their role as jurors to vote on the detailed bipartisan deal, worked out in a closed-door meeting earlier in the day. The plan does not explicitly settle the touchy issue of whether witnesses will be called to testify, but says a vote on witnesses will occur after both sides make their opening statements and there is questioning by senators. Impeachment FAQ Take Action ... Past
Impeachment Overview
Bush has misled this nation for too long. His aggressive foreign policies and corporate give-aways threaten the well-being of all Americans and of other people around the globe. We cannot allow the damage from a Bush Presidency to continue for another four years. His actions are blatantly illegal under International Law and our own Constitution. Now is the time, therefore, to impeach George Bush and high ranking officers in his cabinet.
What is Impeachment?
Impeachment is technically just an indictment, an accusation. Following impeachment, there is a trial and perhaps a conviction. Conviction requires removal from office. The accusation, the actual "impeachment", is made by the House of Representatives. Once impeached, the Senate conducts the trial. Many people use the word "impeachment" to refer to the entire process. But technically it only refers to the formal accusation. Remember Bill Clinton was impeached for lying about having "sex" with Monica. He was then tried by the Senate but found not guilty and remained in office. On this website we will often use the term impeachment to refer to the entire judicial process. Grounds for Impeaching Bush - I believe the most compelling reason for impeaching GW Bush is for Violations of International Law relating to his War on Iraq Constitutional Basis for Impeachment - The Constitution spells out who can be impeached, what for, and by whom.

Senators condemn closed-door impeachment deliberations
February 9, 1999
Web posted at: 5:53 p.m. EDT (1753 GMT) WASHINGTON (AllPolitics, February 9) As the Senate began its closed-door deliberations in the impeachment trial of President Bill Clinton, senators who wanted to open up the proceedings condemned Tuesday's vote rejecting a rule change to do that. They called the move to allow senators to put their final statements into the record after the trial "a great leap sideways." "I think that the motion that passed that would enable any senator who wants to to make public his or her statement in final deliberations ... represents a great leap sideways, not a step forward," said Sen. Paul Wellstone (D-Minnesota). "It is a very poor substitute for being in open session." Sen. Paul Wellstone

Impeachment
From dKosopedia, the free political encyclopedia. Impeachment is the bringing of charges against government officials for misconduct, corruption, or abuse of power. Impeachment can occur at the state level, but in general discussion the term usually refers to charges against federal officials. Impeachment is occasionally misconstrued to mean the removal of an official from office, but in fact it is only the beginning of the process that may lead to an official being removed. Impeachment is analogous to an indictment in a criminal case, and a trial and conviction must follow before an official is removed from office. Impeachment of Federal Officials
The U.S. Constitution says that: "The President, Vice President and all civil officers of the United States, shall be removed from office on impeachment for, and conviction of, treason, bribery, or other high crimes and misdemeanors." The phrase "civil officers" includes Cabinet members and Federal judges, but not members of Congress. The House of Representatives has the sole authority to impeach federal officials, which it can do by a simple majority vote on

"When you are caught in the process of committing a crime, whether it is a common burglary or a war of naked aggression, you do not ask leave to consummate the act. Should this be any less apparent when there are hundreds of thousands of lives in the balance? This nation went to war on allegations our leaders knew with absolute clarity were false and malicious. Stubbornly clinging to the lie while slandering those who bring the truth to public light only compounds the crime with arrogance and obstruction the very crimes that ultimately ended the reign of Nixon. Under the leadership of this president, America is directly responsible for the massive destruction of an innocent nation’s infrastructure, a monumental waste of desperately needed resources, and the loss of more lives than we are willing or able to count." Democrats struggle with impeachment inquiry vote
Vote is set for Thursday; White House downplays its lobbying efforts
WASHINGTON (AllPolitics, October 7) On the eve of Thursday's floor debate and vote, House Democrats vulnerable in next month's elections are struggling to decide whether to join the Republican majority in launching a formal impeachment investigation of President Bill Clinton. The Democrats, unhappy with the White House's anti-impeachment strategy and searching for cover on the issue, suggested the president make a public statement giving them more political leeway to vote Thursday in favor of the impeachment inquiry, CNN has learned. Also in this story: Even after the president said Wednesday morning that lawmakers should vote on "principle" and "conscience," Democratic Caucus Chair Rep. Vic Fazio (D-California) came to the White House to criticize the president's strategy and ask for a more direct statement giving Democrats a "pass" to vote in favor of the inquiry. The White House is worried about a large Democratic defection, since the fewer Democratic votes the easier it will be for the White House to cast the inquiry as politically motivated.

by Congresswoman Barbara Jordan July 25, 1974 Mr. Chairman, I join my colleague Mr. Rangel in thanking you for giving the junior members of this committee the glorious opportunity of sharing the pain of this inquiry. Mr. Chairman, you are a strong man, and it has not been easy but we have tried as best we can to give you as much assistance as possible. Earlier today we heard the beginning of the Preamble to the Constitution of the United States, "We, the people". It is a very eloquent beginning. But when that document was completed, on the seventeenth of September in 1787, I was not included in that "We, the people". I felt somehow for many years that George Washington and Alexander Hamilton just left me out by mistake. But through the process of amendment, interpretation, and court decision I have finally been included in "We, the people". Today I am an inquisitor. I believe hyperbole would not be fictional and would not overstate the solemnness that I feel right now. My faith in the Constitution is whole, it is complete, it is total. I am not going to sit here and be an idle spectator to the diminution, the subversion, the destruction of the Constitution. Mr Dirceu denies claims he operated a scheme to secure politicians' support in exchange for public funds. Impeachment hearings also began against two other deputies accused in the scandal - Brazil's worst for years. Mr Dirceu, an ally of President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, known as Lula, quit as his chief-of-staff in June. He has said he is innocent of the charges and has refused to resign his seat in Congress - a move that would have spared him from the impeachment proceedings and a possible eight-year ban. "I'm not going to resign, I'm quite calm, I committed no crime," he told reporters as the Congress' ethics council began its hearing. Mr Dirceu has a week to organise his defence.
