Wahid cleared but impeachment still likely
Wahid is running out of time, and options JAKARTA, Indonesia Indonesian prosecutors have cleared President Abdurrahman Wahid of wrongdoing, but moves to oust him are expected to persist. Attornery-General Marzuki Darusman cleared Wahid of any involvement in two graft scandals late Monday. Wahid's involvement in the corruption cases triggered moves to impeach him. But Wahid's clearance is unlikely to derail pressure to oust him because the criticism has moved to a more general attack on his erratic leadership. Parliament has so far issued two motions of censure against the president one for his alleged involvement in two high-profile corruption cases and another for failing to meet key policy targets set by parliament. Judiciary Committee approves final article of impeachment
Democrats launch fight for censure
WASHINGTON (AllPolitics, December 12) The House Judiciary Committee Saturday approved an abbreviated fourth article of impeachment against President Bill Clinton. With Republicans calling the allegation in Article IV "an assault on the Congress," the GOP-controlled committee voted to charge Clinton with making false statements in his answers to 81 questions the committee posed to him last month. The committee voted, 21-16, along strict party lines. Also in this story: Before voting on the fourth article of impeachment, the committee agreed to delete charges the president made false and misleading statements to the people of the United States and his staff and frivolously asserted executive privilege. Gregory Craig The House of Representatives must now vote on whether to impeach the president on the committee's four articles and send him to trial in the Senate. The House floor vote is tentatively set for December 17.

Impeachment: The Process and History
The Constitution spells out in a few brief clauses the roles of the House and the Senate in impeaching officials and removing them from office. Although House and Senate rules control the actions of each chamber, there is no uniform practice for carrying out impeachments, partly because the process occurs so infrequently and under varied circumstances. House Committee Battles Over Impeachment 'Plot'
WASHINGTON (AllPolitics, March 25) Democrats on the House Judiciary Committee charged Tuesday their Republican counterparts are plotting to use a review of the Justice Department to lay the groundwork for an impeachment inquiry against President Bill Clinton. "I must now come to the House to report that the Republican leadership is now planning to surreptitiously commence ... an impeachment investigation without any notice to the Congress, to the Democrats on the Judiciary Committee or to the American people, without a vote from the House of Representatives," Rep. John Conyers (D-Mich.) said on the House floor.

Indonesia party backs off early impeachment
There have been hopes that Wahid and Megawati can mend their relationship, which has been increasingly cool By staff and wire reports JAKARTA, Indonesia Indonesia's biggest political party has backed away from efforts to bring forward an impeachment hearing against embattled President Abdurrahman Wahid, local media reported. Earlier, some legislators in the Indonesian Democratic Party-Struggle (PDI-P) of Vice President Megawati Sukarnoputri had said the impoverished country was too volatile to wait until the August 1 impeachment session, the date originally planned. However, after a meeting on Tuesday, the party decided there was no firm constitutional basis for speeding up the hearing, The Jakarta Post reported. Meanwhile, Defense Minister Mahfud MD one of Wahid's senior ministers tasked to lobby major opposition parties to prevent the impeachment process told reporters on Wednesday that the lobbying team has finished its work. ALSO Australia prepares for Wahid's visit "The response is generally positive," he said, as quoted by detikcom news portal, without giving any more details.
