Explosive Starr report outlines case for impeachment
Document provides sordid details of the Clinton-Lewinsky relationship
WASHINGTON (AllPolitics, Sept. 11) In an explosive report to Congress, Independent Counsel Ken Starr outlines a case for impeaching President Bill Clinton on 11 grounds, including perjury, obstruction of justice, witness-tampering and abuse of power, while providing graphic details of the sexual relationship between the president and former White House intern Monica Lewinsky. The report, released Friday afternoon on the Internet, claims that Clinton took actions "inconsistent with the president's constitutional duty to faithfully execute the laws." A House vote earlier in the day paved the way for release of the first 445 pages of Starr's report, with an estimated 2,600 pages of supporting materials still awaiting House Judiciary Committee review. The Impeachment
A remarkable event happened on 8. April 1476. At this time it was usual to put anonymous accusations in a wooden box (called tamburo), which was put up in front of the Palazzo Vecchio (Picture).
On 8. April Leonardo and four others were accused. The anonymous person accused Leonardo to have a homosexual affair with Jacopo Saltarelli, who was a model. The procedure ended for all participants with an acquittal of the charge.
This story is an indication of the supposed homosexuality of Leonardo da Vinci. Back Continue

Quick takes from the Impeachment hearing
WASHINGTON (AllPolitics, November 19) The House Judiciary Committee's hearings into possible impeachable activities by President Bill Clinton got off to a rancorous start Thursday. Here are some of the key quotes and exchanges from the day's historic proceedings.
Partisan bickering
Committee Republicans and Democrats, who have a history of partisan bickering, did not disappoint as the hearing got underway and Democrats introduced a motion to give Clinton's attorney David Kendall two hours to cross-examine Independent Counsel Ken Starr. One exchange between Chairman Henry Hyde (R-Illinois) and Rep. Mel Watt (D-North Carolina) was especially heated: Hyde: The gentleman has made a point that the president needs more time to present you said, present. He will be given all the time in the world to present, unlimited time to...

Impeachment process unstoppable: Indonesia's Speaker
JAKARTA, Indonesia JAKARTA, Indonesia The impeachment process against Indonesia's President Abdurrahman Wahid is unstoppable, the Speaker of Parliament, Amien Rais, has told CNN. He said that a power-sharing arrangement may still be possible "after we have a new president," referring to the present Vice President, Megawati Sukarnoputri. Parliament voted on Wednesday to begin the impeachment process against Wahid that could see him out of office in August. Fanatical supporters of the president invaded the grounds of Parliament in Jakarta and paratroop reinforcements flew to Wahid's stronghold of East Java to dfeal with violent protests on Wednesday. "The violence, the troubles and turmoil in East Java are not natural," Rais said in an interview with CNN's Veronica Pedrosa. "It was engineered, it was quiete artificial. So if the authorities and the police take strong measures without any hesitation they will calm down and they will know they are playing a losing game. It is a matter of time, they will face reality and they will have to accept the reality."

188. The Politics Of Andrew Johnson
Examines the bitter political battle that caused the only impeachment of an American President.

The Politics of Andrew Johnson
From: Eric Foner,
Reconstruction America's Unfinished Revolution, 1863-1877

Harper and Row Publishers, New York, 1988
Detail, Thomas Nast cartoon, Harper's Weekly , September 1, 1866 For Republican moderates, the Civil Rights veto ended all hope of cooperation with the President. In a biting speech, Trumbull dissected Johnson’s logic, especially the notion that guaranteeing blacks civil equality impaired the rights of whites. Underscoring the intensity of Republican feeling, the Senate expelled Democratic Sen. John P. Stockton shortly, before the vote on repassage, on the questionable grounds that the New Jersey legislature in 1865 had illegally altered its rules in order to elect him. Early in April, for the first time in American history, Congress enacted a major piece of legislation over a President's veto. A headline in one Republican newspaper summed up the political situation: "The Separation Complete." Johnson’s rejection of the Civil Rights Bill has always been viewed as a major blunder, the most disastrous miscalculation of his political career. If the President aimed to isolate the Radicals and build up a new political coalition around himself, he could not have failed more miserably. Moderates now concluded that Johnson’s policies "would wreck the Republican party.” They also believed the Civil Rights Bill, as Sherman put it, was "clearly right." Whatever their differences, virtually all Republicans by now endorsed the view expressed by the Springfield Republican after the veto: Protection of the freedmen's civil rights "follows from the suppression of the rebellion....” The party is nothing, if it does not do this the nation is dishonored if it hesitates in this."

Cartoons, shopping win out over impeachment proceedings
Clinton
December 13, 1998
Web posted at: 12:51 p.m. EST (1751 GMT) (CNN) Enough already. That seems to be the message the American public is sending out over Congress's impeachment proceedings and while the House of Representatives continued its work, the broadcast networks were listening to their viewers. Instead of the House Judiciary Committee's consideration of a fourth article of impeachment against President Clinton, CBS, NBC and ABC stuck with their traditional Saturday morning cartoons. Political junkies wanting a taste of the debate had to have cable to find the proceedings on CNN, C-SPAN, Court TV, MSNBC or Fox News. "If there is any indication that the public wants more, we have yet to hear it," said CBS News spokeswoman Sandra Genelius. "We've heard all of this stuff many times over." In malls across America Saturday, shoppers racing for holiday purchases said much the same thing even those who favor impeachment were weary of the process.

Tuesday, November 05, 2002 With friends like these I just don't get it. Sharon asks us to take out Iraq for him. We go all out stoking up the blood lust for a war and before we even get it started Sharon is already asking us to start another against Iran. I just hope that Safire and Co can keep this out of the papers, last thing we want is for our base to start asking questions about who the war is intended to benefit. 9:53:12 AM Comment [ commentCounter (19) Monday, November 04, 2002 Keeping the wrong sort of voters at home Fred from Baltimore sent me a copy of the flyer they have been sending out in the black areas: Come out to vote on November 6th Before you come to vote make sure you pay your:

The Impeachement of William Jefferson Clinton?
*Impeachment* There seems to be a rising possibility that the sitting President of the United States, William Jefferson Clinton, could be impeached. Proceedings had already been proposed even before the present scandals of possible subornation of a witness (Monica Lewinsky), and possible bribery by the Chinese Red Army. Congressman Bob Barr along with 18 other congressmen requested that the house judiciary committee begin the process. At the time he submitted that request, the president may have been guilty of accepting bribes, in the form of campaign contributions, for access to his power. It may be time to read up on the issue. The Conservative Bookstore staff has put together a list of a few books that you will want to take a look at. Click on a title for more information or to order: The Federal Impeachment Process: A Constitutional and Historical Analysis (hb) by Michael J. Gerhardt is a good place to start. Besides a thorough explanation of the process, it goes into the historical background of impeachment up to the present day. Presidential Impeachment by John R. Labovitz is a good book to peruse in the present political crisis. All manner of government officials can be impeached, from judges to presidents. This book focuses on the latter.
