The name change came about as, although clinical histopathology remains an important component of the work that we do, we recognize that we have evolved into what is principally a cutting edge centre of excellence for the study of Cancer Biology and Infection and Immunology. We have therefore changed our name in order to reflect better the activities of the department and its staff in this new age.
I hope you enjoy your visit to our web-site and that you find it useful and interesting.

Welcome to the University of Glasgow Division of Immunology, Infection and Inflammation.
The division was formally constituted in August 2002, merging the three cognate areas returned in the 2001 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE), in which the division was awarded the top (5*) rating. A major theme of Immunology is to understand the delicate balance between the various components of the entire immune system, and its applications to infection (vaccination) and autoimmune diseases (eg. asthma and rheumatoid arthritis). The research work carried out in the Division addresses some of these key issues. The undergraduate Immunology course , the first of its kind in the UK, has achieved world-wide recognition for its quality and scope. Immunology is taught in the second, third and fourth years of the BSc course, with the last two years focusing entirely on immunology. The course is conducted by leading world-class immunologists from within the Division as well as guest lecturers.

Wellcome witnesses to twentieth century medicine : childhood asthma and beyond This is the eleventh volume in the 'Wellcome Witnesses to Twentieth Century Medicine' series. The Wellcome Witness seminars are organised by the History of Twentieth Century Medicine Group at the Wellcome Trust Centre for the History of Medicine at UCL. In this series significant figures of twentieth century medicine provide an oral history as they discuss and debate the important medical events and discoveries of the century. The transcripts of each of these seminars are available as PDF files through the Centre's Web site. This volume is the transcript of a seminar held in April 2000 looking at developments in the management of childhood asthma including subjects such as the development of the pressured inhaler and the work of Dr Roger Altounyan. Description
This series of books reflects the trend towards a core curriculum and self-directed learning. The content is restricted to the 'must know' core information presented in a synoptic style. The diagrams that support the text are in a style that the reader can remember and reproduce in examinations. Each chapter ends with a selection of self-assessment material and full explanatory answers. These consolidate and expand on the chapter contents. This volumes presents an integrated coverage of basic and clinical immunology. Despite the use of problem- and/or topic-based curricula students still respond to the security of a well-ordered presentation of the basic information by traditional discipline.
Contents
The normal immune response. Inflammation and hypersensitivity. Immunisation. Immunodeficiency. Allergy. Autoimmune disease. Inflammatory arthritis and connective tissue disorder. Vasculitis. Immunological therapies. Transplantation. Lymphoproliferative diseases. Use of immunology laboratory. Glossary.

Careers in Medicine: Specialty Information
Allergy and Immunology
Nature of the work
An allergist-immunologist evaluates, diagnoses and manages disorders involving the immune system. Selected examples of such conditions include asthma, anaphylaxis, rhinitis, eczema, and adverse reactions to drugs, foods and insect stings as well as immunodeficiency diseases, defects in host defense, and problems related to autoimmune disease, organ transplantation or malignancies of the immune system. As our scope of the immune system develops, the scope of this specialty is widening. Allergist and Immunologists can can receive training in the following subspecialties:
  • Clinical and Laboratory Immunology - utilizes various laboratory procedures to diagnose and treat disorders characterized by defective responses of the body's immune system.
Training/residency information
Residents certified through a three-year residency in Pediatrics or Internal Medicine are eligible to apply for Allergy and Immunology and Clinical and Laboratory Immunology training programs. Fellowships in allergy and immunology and clinical and laboratory immunology training programs are approximately 2 - 3 years.
Workforce and salary information
According to a report prepared for the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology by SUNY-Albany’s Center for Health Workforce Studies, "the demand for allergist/immunologists is likely to rise over the next several years driven in part by the increasing prevalence of allergy and asthma related conditions and the increasing complexity of treatment interventions. The expansion of managed care is unlikely to reduce demand for services by formally trained allergists." The annual salary for allergy/immunology ranges from $91,000 to $181,000.

  • Graduate Program in Immunology The Immunology Research Group in the Faculty of Medicine at Memorial University offers comprehensive graduate programs leading to the Master of Science and the Doctor of Philosophy degrees. These programs are designed to provide individualized training oriented towards basic research and a solid scientific background in the discipline of immunology. Entering students complete two core courses and they participate in interlaboratory research seminars, journal clubs and seminars presented by visiting speakers. The Immunology Research Group has an interdisciplinary character and consists of faculty from basic medical sciences, clinical sciences and oncology research of the Faculty of Medicine. Research laboratories are housed within the Health Sciences Centre, which also provides for laboratories performing research in other basic science discipline, and contains the General Hospital and the Health Sciences Library. This setting provides an excellent opportunity for collaborative interactions between scientists and easy access to the published source materials. To be considered for admission, applicants must have a bachelor's degree and have a superior academic record. Students entering into the program are assigned a faculty supervisor and a supervisory committee to monitor the student's progress and assist in the research project. The students in the program are also required to take a minimum of two graduate courses. The required core courses for all students are Medicine 6127 and Medicine 6128. Some students may be required to take additional courses, depending upon the thesis topic. Foreign students may also be required to take a course in English as a Second Language.

At ITL Cancer Clinic we use alternative and complementary cancer medicines to treat cancer aggressively with few or no side effects . The core alternative cancer treatments at ITL are state of the art immune therapies to train the patient's own immune system to recognize and destroy tumor tissue. Our team of M.D., and Ph.D. scientists offer the most advanced immune treatments for cancer. These alternative cancer treatments are similar to those offered experimentally to a very limited number of patients at some of the world’s leading cancer treatment centers. The major difference is that at ITL no person receives a placebo. We rely heavily on cancer vaccines to stimulate a patient's own immune system to recognize and destroy tumor cells. We utilize the following strategies in an overall individualized alternative cancer treatment program: Dendritic Cell Therapy
    Heat Shock Protein Therapy

    Cytokines

    Photodynamic Light Therapy
    ...
    Cachexia Vaccine
    (to help prevent wasting syndrome)
