In the patient care area, the section conducts two subspecialty clinics at the Asthma, Allergy, Respiratory Disease Center, housed at 2020 Gravier Street. This is tertiary care referral base for Allergy and Clinical Immunology. Furthermore, the section also runs a large subspecialty clinic once a week at the Medical Center of Louisiana (MCLNO), Charity Hospital Campus. Finally, the section is also responsible for all inpatient subspecialty consults at MCLNO as well as other university affiliated private hospitals. I can say with confidence that the section, despite skeleton staff of one full-time and a part-time faculty, has been providing superior clinical service. Mentoring ambitious and bright premedical college students is one of the major strengths of the section. The student workers actively participate in research projects, prepare abstracts, and present the research at the regional meetings (eg, AFMR). This year Emile Picarella presented an abstract at AFMR and received student research award. More than 90 percent of student workers in this section are admitted to this or other medical schools to pursue their career in medicine.

Dear Visitors, staphylococcus/pseudomonas infections in the eye, developing vaccines to fungi such as Candida and Cryptococcus , as well as using toxoplasmosis and chlamydia as models to study immunologic responses. We also teach in the Medical, Dental and Graduate schools. There are 18 faculty directly in the department and totally 30, including groups with secondary appointments in Infectious Disease, Pulmonary and the Research institute at Children's Hospital. MIP is probably the fastest changing area in the science arena, as we have seen from the SARS outbreak to the anthrax and other bio-defense concerns. The recent solution of about 70 microbiological genomes has also opened up the field to cutting edge technology. Microbiologists tend to be adventurous souls, trying to constantly perform research at the interaction between host and pathogen. Welcome again!

The A-I division originated over 75 years ago when voluntary faculty cared for economically deprived patients under the leadership of the late Leon Unger, MD and subsequently Samuel M. Feinberg, MD. Since the early years, primary objectives of the Division of Allergy-Immunology have been high-quality patient care and education of patients, students, residents, and fellows. In recent decades under the leadership of Dr. Patterson, a vigorous research program was added to the core of programmatic goals of the division. Clinically, the A-I division is a referral center of local, regional, and national stature. Areas of clinical excellence include asthma, allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis, idiopathic anaphylaxis, drug allergy, occupational immunologic lung disease, and allergen immunotherapy. The A-I Division maintains a federally licensed CLIA laboratory which provides diagnostic testing for allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis, hypersensitivity pneumonitis and occupational immunologic lung disease, and testing for other markers of disease is available upon request. This is an exciting time for those who pursue a career in medicine and medical research. Transforming the fruits of genomic and proteomic research into information and medicines that have a positive impact on humans in health and disease will be highly gratifying. As our appreciation of the impact of the immune system on disease continues to expand, the field of Allergy-Immunology will expand in relevance to the practice of medicine and the understanding of disease.

For a more comprehensive view on this topic read this accompanying article Since the times of the Greeks conventional medicine has traditionally utilized the biomedical model. This model focuses on dualism involving the mind and the body interactions. The biomedical model treats disease as a pathology that occurs within the person. The doctor's function is to control the pathology, repair the body and restore health. The limitation of this model is that it excludes any psychological, social or ecological factors. [1] In contrast, the humanistic model utilizes a pleuralistic approach considering interactions and the interconnectedness between the mind, the body and the spirit when treating "dis-ease" within a person. The health or well-being of the body can no longer ignore the impact of the mind, the emotions or the spirit on the process. [1,2] This pleuralistic model, considering mind-body-spirit is being scientifically supported in the relatively new field of study—

    1. Summary of Research Interests.
TNF-receptor family members play a key role in inflammation, innate and adaptive immunity and apoptosis. The goals of our lab are two fold. First, we are addressing fundamental questions about how the prototypic receptor, TNF-R1, initiates different responses. Second, we are investigating how TNF-R1 and other family members regulate apoptosis in pulmonary myofibroblasts. These latter studies are aimed at furthering our understanding of the mechanisms that lead to the development of pulmonary fibrosis.
    2. The subcellular localization of the TNF receptor, TNF-R1, determines signaling responses.
    3. TRUSS, a TNF receptor scaffolding protein.
in vivo . In addition, we are collaborating with Dr. Gongyi Zhang's lab to determine the 3-dimensional structure of TRUSS. Figure 1.
