Clinical Director: Clin. Assoc. Prof. Trevor Williams
    Research Areas
Academic and research interests have developed along several different lines:
    • Application of basic cellular immunological and molecular biological techniques to the understanding and management of allergic and respiratory immunological diseases, with emphasis on the development of novel approaches for the down regulation of unwanted or aberrant immune responses. The cellular and molecular basis of specific interactions between T cell antigen receptors, major histocompatibility class II molecules and antigenic peptides are being examined using human CD4 + T cell s reactive with house dust mite allergens, grass pollen allergens, and latex allergens.
Molecular biological research of grass pollen and latex allergens for novel diagnostic and therapeutic reagents. Genes encoding major allergens are being cloned and expressed in bacterial and yeast cells while synthetic peptides base d on their deduced amino acid sequences are used to identify B cell (or IgE binding) epitopes. Such pure and standardised recombinant proteins and synthetic peptides are useful for more accurate diagnosis of allergy. B and T cell epitope information is al so useful in the modification of the allergens so that they are no longer IgE reactive but still possess their T cell activating capacity. Such hypoallergenic variants of allergens will be useful for immunotherapy without the associated risk of systemic allergic reactions.

Yale University School of Medicine IMMUNOLOGY Faculty Research Interests. The Section of Immunobiology has a long tradition of interdisciplinary training in immunology. Pre- and post-doctoral trainees can receive research training in a combination of laboratories, allowing them to acquire a unique range of technical skills and concepts to be applied to a focused problem. In addition, trainees receive formal course work, attend seminars at which the research of outside experts or fellow trainees is presented and critiqued, and are free to exploit the considerable intellectual resources at Yale University. Each student selects his/her course of research and study in consultation with a mentor and a committee of advisors. Predoctoral training in Immunobiology leads to a Ph.D. degree and is designed to train individuals to perform independent research. For more information, see the home page for the Immunology Graduate Program. A wide variety of shared facilities are located within the Section: Facilities Available Cell Sorter Facility
In TAC 613 are 5 user-operated analyzers (4 BD FACSCaliburs and 1 BD FACScan). The Caliburs can analyze up to 4 colors with 488 nm and 633 nm excitation lasers while the FACScan can analyze 3 colors from a single 488 nm laser. Plans are in place to install sometime in spring of 2004 a multicolor analyzer which can do up to 14 colors from 4 lasers with a digital acquisition and analysis system. Also some of our machines are equipped with the FACSFlow fluidics stabilization system and the FACSLoader for automatic processing of samples. Machines are checked daily for optimal performance and Geoff Lyon is available during working hours to troubleshoot and can arrange training by appointment. The Brisbane Inflammatory Bowel Diseases Research Centre seeks out key issues related to understanding and treatment of inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) by assembling, supporting and managing teams to advance knowledge in epidemiology, genetics, immunology and pharmacokinetics. Our aim is to be recognised both in Australia and internationally for basic and clinical research in gut immunology, colonic microbial ecology, IBD (Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, indeterminate colitis) and other immune based gastrointestinal disorders. We run specialised IBD clinics and have active research programs in IBD epidemiology, genetics, immunology, microbiology and pharmacokinetics. Go to other pages on our site if you want more details.
