The activities of the Center for Cancer Research Nanobiology Program (CCRNP) fall into several broad areas: macromolecular structure and function; membrane structure and function; immunology; phamacokinetics and computational and modeling methodology. The work is both theoretical and experimental. Application of theoretical understanding to these biological systems is accomplished through the use of advanced computing. Many of the theoretical studies are possible only through use of the supercomputing facilities at the Advanced Biomedical Computing Center, NCI-Frederick. Note the name of the lab has been changed as of August 1, 2005 from Laboratory of Computational and Experimental Biology (LECB) to Center for Cancer Research Nanobiology Program (CCRNP).

Rheumatoid arthritis is a complex autoimmune chronic inflammatory disease.  Work in this department over the past 17 years has unravelled important cellular and molecular aspects of the pathogenesis which have culminated in the definition of TNFa as a therapeutic target.  This has reinforced the department’s interests in TNF, how it is regulated in health and disease, how it signals target cells and initiates inflammatory processes.  Work is focused on understanding how TNFa production is disregulated and how to develop intracellular targets whose inhibition may mimic the benefits of TNF blockade. Much of the work of this department involves human disease tissue and extracting information about disease processes as they actually are in humans, not in cell lines or animal models, with a view to furthering understanding of pathogenesis, aimed towards more effective therapy.

Building on the existing strong programs in Immunology, Microbiology and Vaccine Biology at the University of Rochester, the Center for Vaccine Biology and Immunology focusses on basic research into immunological mechanisms, and also on the long-term goal of helping to design the next generation of vaccines. The Center occupies 31,500 square feet of research space on the top floor of the recently (1999) constructed Kornberg Medical Research Building at the University of Rochester Medical Center. In addition, faculty throughout the Medical Center, including those in the new research building, share state-of-the-art core facilities which are housed in the new research building and elsewhere. Selected Programs which interact extensively with the Center include the following:
