CHAPTER 9: War, Prosperity and Depression
An Outline of American History
"The chief business of the American people is business."
President Calvin Coolidge, 1925

WAR AND NEUTRAL RIGHTS To the American public of 1914, the outbreak of war in Europe came as a shock. At first the encounter seemed remote, but its economic and political effects were swift and deep. By 1915 U.S. industry, which had been mildly depressed, was prospering again with munitions orders from the Western Allies. Both sides used propaganda to arouse the public passions of Americans a third of whom were foreign-born or had one or two foreign-born parents. Moreover, Britain and Germany both acted against U.S. shipping on the high seas, bringing sharp protests from President Woodrow Wilson. But the disputes between the United States and Germany grew increasingly ominous. In February 1915, German military leaders announced that they would attack all merchant shipping on the waters around the British Isles. President Wilson warned that the United States would not forsake its traditional right, as a neutral, to trade on the high seas a view of neutral rights not shared by Germany or Great Britain. Wilson declared that the nation would hold Germany to "strict accountability" for the loss of American vessels or lives. Soon afterward, in the spring of 1915, when the British liner Lusitania was sunk with nearly 1,200 people aboard, 128 of them Americans, indignation reached a fever pitch.

Irish Immigrants in America during the 19th Century
hough life in Ireland was cruel, emigrating to America was not a joyful event...it was referred to as the American Wake for these people knew they would never see Ireland again. Those who pursued this path did so only because they new their future in Ireland would only be more poverty, disease, and English oppression. America became their dream. Early immigrant letters described it as a land of abundance and urged others to follow them through the "Golden Door." These letters were read at social events encouraging the young to join them in this wonderful new country. They left in droves on ships that were so crowded, with conditions so terrible, that they were referred to as Coffin Ships. Even as the boat was docking, these immigrants to America learned that life in America was going to be a battle for survival. Hundreds of runners, usually large greedy men, swarmed aboard the ship grabbing immigrants and their bags trying to force them to their favorite tenement house and then exact an outrageous fee for their services. As the poor immigrant had no means of moving on, they settled in the port of arrival. Almshouses were filled with these Irish immigrants. They begged on every street. One honest immigrant wrote home at the height of the potato famine exodus, "My master is a great tyrant, he treats me as badly as if I was a common Irishman." The writer further added, "Our position in America is one of shame and poverty." No group was considered lower than an Irishman in America during the 1850s.

    Americans Protest "La Reconquista"
Over 300 Americans from across the U.S. gathered in Washington, D.C., April 22-25 for Immigration Reform Awareness Week '98. Meeting under the banner of a U.S. map with the word "FULL" across it, they fanned out to the offices of congressmen and senators and presented the case for immigration reform.
One of their key arguments dealt with the wholesale invasion of the American Southwest, especially California, by Mexicans, legal and illegal. Many of these people see themselves as part of a process called "la reconquista" the reconquest or retaking of land that once belonged to Mexico. These raiding parties, at least according to some of their leaders, will retake these lands and re-establish Spanish.
Discussing a new Mexican law permitting dual citizenship. Jose Angel Pescador Osuna, Mexican Consul General in Los Angeles told an audience at the Southwestern University School of Law, February 6, 1998: "I think we are practising la Reconquista in California."
Glenn Spencer warns of Armed Conflict with Mexico
"The Mexican government is actively supporting the invasion of the United States, while our government looks the other way," says Glenn Spencer who heads the California-based Voice of Citizens Together.

About 2,000 Iranian-Americans protested outside a federal building in west Los Angeles on Wednesday. Story Tools
LOS ANGELES, California (CNN) About 2,000 Iranian-Americans protested outside the federal building in west Los Angeles on Wednesday to denounce a new immigration policy that they say has resulted in the unfair detention of immigrants. The demonstration was peaceful, and police reported no arrests. Most protesters carried signs such as "Detain terrorists, not innocent immigrants." Another sign read: "What's next? Concentration camps." Protesters were demonstrating against a Justice Department policy implemented after the September 11, 2001, terror attacks that requires men 16 and older who are not citizens to register with U.S. immigration officials if they're from one of more than a dozen mostly Muslim and Middle Eastern nations, including Iran. Kayhan Shakib, the president of the Iranian-American Lawyers Association, which helped organize the protest, said the Immigration and Naturalization Service was ill-prepared to handle the hundreds of people who went there to register, resulting in the unnecessary detainment of individuals.

America, they implied, was made not by settlers, but by Catholic and Jewish immigrants, especially the gangsters of the big cities Gangster movies had long been popular for the same reasons as cowboy movies: both mobsters and frontiersmen live in a Hobbesian state of nature, beyond the reaches of the law.
