FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE UIS awards public policy grants to 23 Illinois high schools October 30, 2003 SPRINGFIELD - The University of Illinois at Springfield's Public Policy High School Initiatives program has awarded Public Policy Classroom Grant Awards for the 2003-2004 school year to 23 secondary schools across the state. Under this program, students and teacher teams, under the direction of a lead teacher, research public policy issues affecting their own community and determine the feasibility and resources for potential solutions. During the course of the project, students learn about local community government and their role as citizens, often creating working relationships with local and state officials in the process. Students and teachers will also have the opportunity to come to Springfield to meet with their state legislators, watch government in action on the floor of the House and Senate, and visit committee hearings and other sites of interest in Springfield related to governing Illinois. The program is designed to help students become aware of issues facing their communities and the state, develop a better understanding of the public policymaking process and the roles of citizens, explore career interests that may include public service and government, strengthen research and technology skills, and develop potential solutions to current public policy issues that impact their home communities.

Illinois Universities, Colleges, Junior Colleges, Technical Schools Because there are a number of post-high school educational opportunities for students, it is important to understand the difference between the types of institutions available. Generally, the following is true:
  • Universities offer 4-year Bachelor's degree programs. In addition these schools offer degree programs beyond the Bachelor's, most commonly Master's, Professional (MD and JD), and Doctorate degrees. Colleges offer 4 year Bachelor degrees. Some may offer 2-year associate degrees as well. Many Junior Colleges use the term "college" even though they do not offer Bachelor degrees. Junior and Community Colleges offer a wide range of degree programs leading to the 2 year Associate degree, which is the most common. Many students will attend these schools for 1-2 years and transfer to a 4-year college or university. Students also attend these schools for vocational and technical education and training. Technical/Vocational Colleges generally do not offer degree programs but do provide vocational or technical training and certification in a specific career field.

    DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION PROPOSAL
Create a new Illinois Department of Education responsible for the administration of education in Illinois. Utilize the Department to launch an initiative that will streamline state-level education administration and reduce non-instructional costs for districts, saving as much as $1 billion over four years for reinvestment into classroom instruction. HOW WILL IT BE IMPLEMENTED?
Legislation will remove all administrative powers and responsibilities from ISBE and place them in the Department of Education under the Governor. Creating a Department of Education that is directly accountable to the Governor will profoundly improve the way education services are delivered in the State of Illinois. The Department can transform education by eliminating rules and procedures that force districts to spend money and time on compliance activities. It will partner with education entities to reduce a host of administrative and non-instructional costs for districts, and will generally operate more efficiently. Streamline Rules and Bureaucracy
Projected Outcome: A Marked Reduction in the 2,800 Pages of Rules

Things to consider before you enroll in a private vocational school:
Is the school promising you a job when you graduate?
It is against the law for private vocational schools to use any business name, logo or insignia that is designed to be deceptive and mislead potential students about affiliations the school might have. Did you answer an employment agency ad for a job and found you were really calling a school?
Is a course necessary to get a job?
Check the newspaper to see who is offering the jobs you want. Call the human resources departments of some of the companies and ask if you really need a course. How are you going to pay for the course?
Depending on which type of loan you get, you may have to start repaying the loan as soon as you finish school.
It can take many years to pay back the loan, depending on the cost of the course and how high the interest rate is.
Unlike many other types of loans or debts, school loans are very difficult to discharge in bankruptcy.

Planning for College is not a simple process, but it is well worth the time and effort it takes. As a student at West Chicago Community High School, you have already been confronted with choices and and questions from your Counselor about your interests, career plans and educational goals. These are important things to think about before you look for a specific College. Once you are ready to look for specific colleges to contact and/or apply to, your Counselor can be of significant help to you.
To send a transcript to any College, we must have your written permission. If you click here, you can see a "Transcript Release Form" which you can print. Then fill out the form, sign it and mail it (by regular US mail) to the school address (326 Joliet St., West Chicago, IL 60185) or bring it in to your Counselor.
The links below can also be helpful in contacting individual schools, or doing a search to identify schools that might be good for you. Of course, it's always a good idea to contact Your Counselor.
