May/June 2003 Student sex offenders: What's a district to do? by Shayne L. Aldridge and Pamela J. Kennerly When it comes to protecting students from convicted sex offenders, new registration and notification requirements would seem to help school districts to do just that: protect students. But provisions in the law may complicate the situation when the sex offenders are students themselves. The Sex Offenders Registration Act [730 ILCS 150/1 et seq.] requires convicted sex offenders to register with the local law enforcement office and, among other things, prohibits offenders from free access to areas where children are usually present. Once registered, the Sex Offender and Child Murderer Community Notification Law requires the local law enforcement agency to post the sex offender's information on the Internet and mandates that school officials and certain community members receive notice of the sex offender's presence in the area. Are these statutes so far-reaching that they apply to minors judged as juvenile sex offenders? In

Safeguarding Children
School Violence Tipline:
Fact Sheet for Parents and Teachers Background
The School Violence Tipline provides a means for students to anonymously report threats of violence and weapons violations on school grounds. The tipline is answered by trained Illinois State Police telecommunicators who will refer the reports to local law enforcement agencies. Moreover, if the caller is distressed or overly agitated the telecommunicator can immediately forward the call to a local mental health crisis worker. When discussing the tipline with your children or students,
stress the following: In the event that you feel threatened, know of a possible act of violence, or find out about a weapon but are unable to confide in a trusted adult, the tipline is an anonymous way to relay the information. However, you should call the tipline only of you feel it is impossible to talk to a trusted adult first. Confiding in a person you trust is by far the best way to deal with information about school violence. The School Violence Tipline was created to give you an anonymous way to report any threats of violence or weapons you might know about. You should call the tipline only in those situations where there is no immediate threat of violence to you or your fellow students. (For example, if the student heard one classmate threaten another or saw a weapon in a classmate's locker.)

Safeguarding Children
School Violence Tipline When our children are at school, we assume and hope that they are in a safe environment. However, we know that violence in schools has become a serious problem. The best way to prevent this type of violence is to empower students who are usually the first to hear about impending violence at school. While the best way to prevent violence is to inform a trusted adult, students can report threats of violence anonymously to the statewide, toll-free School Violence Tipline. Promoting the tipline is a collaborative effort of the Office of the Attorney General, the Illinois State Police, and the Illinois Parent Teacher Association. The tipline is answered by members of the Illinois State Police. Additional support is provided by the Springfield Mental Health Center. If you think someone is planning a violent attack at your school, please call the School Violence Tipline at 1-800-477-0024. The iTransfer.org website is the visual home of the Illinois Articulation Initiative (IAI), a voluntary effort among over 100 Illinois colleges and universities to ease transfer among schools for the 30,000 Illinois students who transfer each year. Beginning May 1, 1998, you can enter any participating Illinois school as a freshman, finish the IAI Transferable General Education Core Curriculum, and have it accepted and applied to degree requirements of any other participating school after transfer. The Illinois Transferable General Education Core Curriculum is a package of 12 to 13 lower division courses (37 to 41 semester credits) providing the foundation skills (oral and written communication, math) and breadth of knowledge (humanities and fine arts, social and behavioral sciences, physical and life sciences) expected of every college graduate. 57. Things To Know
The illinois Transferable general Education Core Curriculum (IAI GECC) is in more than 1 illinois school can satisfy lowerdivision general education
http://www.itransfer.org/IAI/Other/ThingsToKnow.taf
Things You Should Know About the IAI GECC and IAI Major Recommendations
IAI GECC
  • The Illinois Articulation Initiative (IAI) agreement and the iTransfer website are designed to make transferring to any IAI participating school as smooth as possible. When making transfer plans, always seek the advice of an academic advisor or admissions counselor at your current school and at the school you plan to attend.
  • Articulation is the process of transferring courses from one school to another and the way the classes will be used at the receiving school.
  • The Illinois Transferable General Education Core Curriculum (IAI GECC) is for transfer students only, not native students.
  • You should complete the Illinois Transferable General Education Core Curriculum (IaI GECC) as a package before transferring to be guaranteed full general education credit. When the full package is not completed before transfer, each college or university decides how to apply each individual course.
  • The Illinois Transferable General Education Core Curriculum (IAI GECC) requires a total of 12 to 13 courses (37 to 41 semester credits) or a total of 12 to 14 courses (56 to 61 quarter credits).
