" More money is put into prisons than into schools. That, in itself, is the description of a nation bent on suicide. I mean, what is more precious to us than our own children? We are going to build a lot more prisons if we do not deal with the schools and their inequalities

The Glencoe Parent Teacher Association is officially a thing of a past. On April 12, a portion of the association's 1,240 members voted to dissolve the group for the purpose of creating a new parent teacher organization or PTO. Wendy Serrino, co-president of the Glencoe PTA, said 94 votes were counted, including 50 absentee ballots, during a meeting at Central School's Young Auditorium. The vote was not without its share of controversy. PTA bylaws mandate that two-thirds of a membership has to approve the dissolution. Fewer than 8 percent of Glencoe's membership voted on the matter. Jean Matthiessen, spokeswoman for the Illinois PTA, said the result wouldn't be contested. "We regret their decision," Matthiessen said last week. "They will always be welcomed back with open arms should they reconsider." To an outsider, the disbanding of one parent teacher group to form another may not appear to be anything of note. But the group's members say the changeover will have a direct and positive impact on the 1,370 students in Glencoe Elementary School District 35. "We're thrilled," Serrino said. "It's wonderful news for Glencoe."

How am I ever going to get the time to take down that tree and get rid of the poison ivy along the cabins, put up wood duck boxes, sink new brush in the lake for the fish habitat, paint the edges of the miniature golf course, and redo the orienteering course. PLUS, now we need a new foot bridge across the creek, a platform on the water by the campfire ring, and dozens of bat boxes. Since we lost so many trees from last year's ice storms, our bats have lost their natural homes. Does this sound like your camp? Two challenges face most camps todayfunding and time. Where do you get the needed money to maintain and improve your aging facility? Many nonprofit camps depend upon donations to help keep the camp afloat. If your camp is like many that I have visited this year, then your camp donations are down. A great way to overcome declining cash contributions is to develop project partnerships.

Alice George I f you are interested in working with me to design a program, please email me . Here are some options to consider:
  • One-week intensive residencies , where I work with a core group of students each day. This can be an effective way to jump-start students' creativity and language fluency, especially if there are complementary activities before and/or after the residency. I may consider traveling outside the Chicago area.
Two to eight-week residencies within the Chicago area, where I see core classrooms of students one to 3 times/week, coordinating with classroom teachers to design units which reinforce curriculum or emphasize particular skill sets. In elementary settings, I often see students in both their classrooma and during 'specials' (music, art, etc.) to minimize time taken from classroom scheduling. Adult or multi-generational workshops within schools, libraries or community centers. One option is a half or full-day collage/poetry workshop (visit the
