Why Mascots Have Tales
From Appleknockers to Zippers
by Fred Willman
About the Book How to Order Cover Excerpts ... About the Author The Complete Guide to
Illinois High School Mascots
What do Bunnies, Orphans, Midgets, and Pretzels have in common? What is a Caxy, a Tar, a Whip-Pur, or a Piasa Bird? All of them are Illinois high school mascots and their stories are all explained in a new book by Fred Willman called Why Mascots Have Tales. The 788 high schools of Illinois are represented by 250 different mascots, 144 of which are very unusual. Why Mascots Have Tales examines what they mean and how they got their names. In addition, Illinois mascots are compared to mascots nationwide. Two other ingredients of school spirit, school colors and enrollments, are also examined. Mascots reveal much about Illinois geography and history as well as the diversity, distribution, character, and careers of its people. Why Mascots Have Tales is a reference book, a humorous book, a trivia book, a geography book, a history book, a sociology book, and an anthropology book. It is also a non-fiction book, but is greatly affected by fiction. High school mascot names are real, but why they were chosen involves history, natural surroundings, folklore, and that powerful emotion called school spirit. It is a carefully collected and organized storehouse of information about the montage of emotional symbols of all the high schools representing the communities of our state, making it both fun and academically significant.

Northern Illinois "When we first got started," said George Bellovics, landscape architect and Grand Illinois Trail coordinator for the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, "the Grand Illinois Trail really was about doing a big project, about having a bold vision which linked Lake Michigan to the Mississippi River. And as it turned out, the idea was so good that we just kept extending it." EVENTS June 15–21, a 175-member group will take to the trail in the first-ever Grand Illinois Trail and Parks Ride ("GITAP") to travel the entire route. Organized by the League of Illinois Bicyclists , this weeklong event is already sold out, but serious cyclists can schedule the trip for next year by visiting the League 's Web site or by calling (630) 978-0583.

Geography
In some towns, you have to drive for hours to take a peaceful walk in the woods or experience the serenity of an afternoon lolling on a riverbank, but in Oregon, Illinois, you are only minutes away from picturesque landscapes, verdant forests, rocky cliffs, and the meandering Rock River. Terrain The Rock River begins in southern Wisconsin and flows south through Rockford, meandering west through Oregon, passing by Grand Detour and ending in the Quad Cities area where it empties into the Mississippi River. The Rock River boasts some of the best smallmouth bass fishing in the state. Along its banks lies some of Oregon's popular natural attractions and recreation areas including Lowden State Park , filled with deep, dark forests, and Lowden-Miller State Forest , 2,225 acres offering hiking, backpacking, birding, hunting and cross-country skiing, and Castle Rock State Park , with trails to the "top of the rocks." Castle Rock, named for its large outcropping of sandstone, is one of the few places in Illinois where the sandstone is exposed at the surface. A diversity of natural environments is found here including ravines, upland and floodplain forests, prairie, streams, and sandstone outcrops.

Welcome to the Department of Geography-Geology at Illinois State University.
You are invited to explore our Web site, to learn about our programs, faculty and students, upcoming events and opportunities as well as other useful and interesting information. The Department of Geography-Geology has fifteen tenured or tenure-track faculty (including the chair) and three support staff. We offer three degree programs, a B.S./B.A. in Geography, a B.S. in Geology, and an M.S. in Hydrogeology. This program is highly specialized; it involves assessing and solving socially relevant, scientifically important problems through applied and theoretical research in the broad field of groundwater science. Recognizing valuable overlap among disciplines, the Department is a principal contributor to three interdisciplinary minor program. These are the Environmental Studies, Tourism Studies, and Urban Studies Minor programs. The cornerstones of the Department are our traditional B.S./B.A. programs. Our educational philosophy is firmly rooted in the liberal arts tradition. The common goal of each of these programs is to graduate broadly trained-students who are equally prepared to pursue an advanced degree or obtain suitable employment as professionals within or outside of the discipline. These cornerstones are strengthened by our involvement in the interdisciplinary minor programs, which allow us to service students who pursue degrees in other programs. The Department is an essential contributor to the General Education curriculum.

Sanborn maps were made to assist insurance underwriters in determining fire insurance rates for individual buildings by examining the buildings' construction methods, heat and lighting sources, manufacturing uses, and the same attributes of nearby buildings. The maps primarily provide information on the downtown areas of cities and adjoining residential areas. They are especially useful in providing a record of urban development from the 1880s through the first half of the twentieth century. Family historians may also find them interesting. Map and Geography Library personnel will retrieve Sanborn maps for patrons upon request. Sanborn maps are available for consultation Mondays through Fridays, 9:00am-4:30pm. The Map and Geography Library can also provide information about other libraries that have Sanborn map coverage of cities in states not included in the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Library Sanborn collection.

For over eighty years, the Department of Geography has a proud tradition of producing quality graduates who serve in positions of education, industry, business, and government. Many of our graduates go on to pursue Masters or Doctoral degrees. In fact the number of our M.A. graduates going on to earn a Ph.D. ranks in the top 20 of non-Ph.D.-granting Geography departments in the United States.
The Department of Geography offers: The department's meteorology program is one of two meteorology programs in Illinois that meet the National Weather Service requirements for employment as a meteorologist and it is the only meteorology program in the state with its own weather radar system (one of the few in the United States having this state-of-the-art technology). The department also is home to the McDonough County GIS Center, a partnership between WIU, the City of Macomb and McDonough County. The Center is responsible for compilation, execution, and management of GIS projects for the city of Macomb and McDonough County. The department offers planning courses at the graduate level. Students can specialize in one of several emphases including economic development, environmental planning, land use regulation, housing, and community development. The planning track is designed to prepare students to take on complex and challenging issues. Most planning students go on to positions at local, regional, state, and private-sector agencies. Others move on to pursue doctoral degrees.
