CHAPTER 10
THE AGRICULTURAL CORE
T he Agricultural Core ( Map 9 : 18K) is a culture region based on an accumulated mix of habits, attitudes, and reactions to the traditional opportunities for livelihood and contact with other groups within the region. Basically, the Agricultural Core is small-town and rural America specially flavored with the agricultural patterns of this region. The population of the Agricultural Core is politically and socially cautious yet independent, secure in what has proven successful and not strongly exposed to the pressures for change found in major urban centers or in the transition zones between regions. "Middle America" is a popular term applied to the region. The Agricultural Core population received contributions of foreign-born migrants, most of whom originated in northwestern Europe, until late in the 19th century. Later immigrants, from eastern Europe and Mediterranean countries, found the better agricultural land occupied, and settled in the nearby metropolitan areas of the Manufacturing Core. THE ENVIRONMENTAL BASE The settlers who moved across the Appalachians and onto the eastern interior plains were concerned with survival and pursuit of a livelihood. Except for the resistance of the local American Indian population and the usual vagaries of nature, the environment was supportive. Most of Ohio, Indiana, and lower Michigan was covered by a mixed hardwood forest. The trees encountered indicated to the experienced easterner where the best soils were located. They also provided considerable local fuel and building material. Near the western margin of Indiana and farther into Illinois and southern Wisconsin, the small openings and glades in the forest were larger and more frequent. Except along the rivers and in hillier country, Illinois, Iowa, and parts of southern Minnesota and northern Missouri appeared to be as much open grassland as forest. By the time settlers reached north-central and western Iowa, the dense woodlands had been left kilometers behind.

68. Geography Of St. Louis
The City of St. Louis is located on 61 square miles just south of the Meetingof the where the Missouri and illinois Rivers join the Mississippi River.
http://stlouis.missouri.org/citygov/planning/research/data/about/geography.html
ABOUTST. LOUIS: GEOGRAPHY LOCATION The City of St. Louis is located on 61 square miles just south of the "Meeting of the Rivers," where the Missouri and Illinois Rivers join the Mississippi River. The City is at the center of a 12 county, 7,000 square mile metropolitan area that includes approximately 2.5 million people. The area is a relatively short distance by airplane, automobile or train from such other cities as Kansas City (250 miles), Chicago (300 miles) Indianapolis (250 miles) and Memphis (300 miles). PHYSIOGRAPHY GEOLOGY DEVELOPMENT PATTERNS The City of St. Louis is 100% urbanized. However, as a result of abandonment, dereliction and contamination of properties, there are many opportunities for redevelopment of small sites within the city limits. More challenging is combining small sites some publicly-owned by the city's Land Reutilization Authority (LRA) or other agencies, and some privately owned to create substantially sized sites for new residential and industrial development. Office Space: Retail: Traditionally, downtown St. Louis was the premier retail center of the metropolitan area. Although that role has declined, downtown retains a substantial selection of unique shops, as well as two department stores (Dillard's and Famous-Barr) and two enclosed shopping malls (Union Station and St. Louis Centre). Outside downtown, City retail generally consists of corner stores and strip development along major arteries. Significant retail strips include the Central West End shopping and restaurant district along Euclid Avenue, the Grand South Grand area just south of Tower Grove Park, and Cherokee Street with its Hispanic businesses west of Jefferson Ave. and "Antique Row" east of Jefferson Ave. A few major auto-oriented shopping centers are located in the City. They include the Hampton Village Shopping Center at Hampton and Chippewa, Lindell Marketplace at Lindell and Sarah, and City Plaza at Union and Natural Bridge.

ArcView GIS
Illinois State Police GIS
Works on Many Levels
By Monica Pratt, ArcUser Editor

It's no accident that traffic fatalities have declined in Cook County since 1996. GIS has helped the Illinois State Police (ISP) Department pursue a vigorous enforcement program that reduced traffic fatalities 42 percent during its first year in operation. The Department found GIS a powerful tool for managing and using data and has employed a many-faceted approach for implementing GIS use throughout the organization.
"This information is helping our Chicago district office and our patrol sectors get a better idea of when they need to have their manpower available and where the problem areas are," says Bitner. Map-based traffic information has been both effective and popular. Using maps helps target patrol assignments and make the best use of resources. GIS Customized by District Mapping for the Masses The Internet offered a less costly and labor intensive way to distribute some types of data to the public and the Department. The Illinois State Police Interactive Crime and Crash Mapping Daily and Monthly Fatality Reports Web site, part of the general ISP Web site, has been up since August 1999. The site uses MapObjects and MapObjects Internet Map Server technology to let visitors access traffic data that is updated daily.

Introduction
What kind of data is available?
The Census 2000 data comes directly from the surveys sent out. In the spring of 2000 the Census Bureau sent out questionnaires to all households in the U.S. Everyone was asked these questions, known as the short form or 100-percent characteristics. September 1, 2005 - the 1930 Census returns were recently released to the public) Sex Age and date of birth Household relationship Race Spanish/Hispanic/Latino origin Tenure (whether the home is owned or rented) The results are compiled in the SF1 data tables . You can find data for all of these questions down to the block level, which is the smallest unit of Census geography.
