Geography
In some towns, you have to drive for hours to take a peaceful walk in the woods or experience the serenity of an afternoon lolling on a riverbank, but in Oregon, Illinois, you are only minutes away from picturesque landscapes, verdant forests, rocky cliffs, and the meandering Rock River. Terrain The Rock River begins in southern Wisconsin and flows south through Rockford, meandering west through Oregon, passing by Grand Detour and ending in the Quad Cities area where it empties into the Mississippi River. The Rock River boasts some of the best smallmouth bass fishing in the state. Along its banks lies some of Oregon's popular natural attractions and recreation areas including Lowden State Park , filled with deep, dark forests, and Lowden-Miller State Forest , 2,225 acres offering hiking, backpacking, birding, hunting and cross-country skiing, and Castle Rock State Park , with trails to the "top of the rocks." Castle Rock, named for its large outcropping of sandstone, is one of the few places in Illinois where the sandstone is exposed at the surface. A diversity of natural environments is found here including ravines, upland and floodplain forests, prairie, streams, and sandstone outcrops.

WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO………?
Many Geography alumni have written, asking “what ever happened to…?”
The following update on full-time faculty and long-time part-time faculty who have taught or are teaching
in the Department of Geography at SUNY New Paltz
has been assembled from publicly available sources, such as websites,
in an effort to help answer “what ever happened to….?”

George Schnell
, the founder of the college’s Department of Geography and ID-PLUS, served a quarter century as the Department’s first chair. At SUNY New Paltz, he initiated the Geography Internship Program , which most majors participated in over three decades, and taught Physical Geography Problems of Population , and Geography for Teachers , among other courses. Although George “retired” in 1999, he continues to teach one graduate course each semester—alternating Problems of Population , and Geography for Teachers —while writing and publishing about Pennsylvania. His major concern at the moment is staying out of the kitchen—except during mealtimes. Email: GeorgeSchnell@msn.com

    The Manufacturing Core
United States Geography Manufacturing is an important economic activity in the United States. The evidence of this is everywherein articles of clothing, items of preserved food, residential structures, means of transport and communication, and many other things. In spite of the presence of items manufactured outside the country, domestic industry remains paramount, and it is rare for any medium-sized U.S. town to be without at least some local employment in manufacturing. The northeastern United States, excluding northern New England, is the country's single most significant region of manufacturing. This region is loosely defined on three sides by the Ohio River Valley, Megalopolis, and the southern Great Lakes. The western margin of the region is less clear; it blends gradually with agriculture-dominant landscapes across southern Indiana, Illinois, and beyond. In spite of the region's moderate extent and the growth of manufacturing elsewhere, the Manufacturing Core continues to be of tremendous economic significance in American geography. Its factories produce most of the country's steel, as well as a significant percentage of its motor vehicles and motor vehicle parts. Most of the important ports, the main centers of communication, and the primary financial centers are within or near the region, and the country's political capital is on the immediate margins.

The United States owes much of its national character and its wealth to its good fortune in having such a large and varied landmass to inhabit and cultivate. Yet the country still exhibits marks of regional identity, and one way Americans cope with the size of their country is to think of themselves as linked geographically by certain traits, such as New England self-reliance, southern hospitality, midwestern wholesomeness, western mellowness. This chapter examines American geography, history, and customs through the filters of six main regions:
    • New England , made up of Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Rhode Island.
    • The Middle Atlantic , comprising New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, and Maryland.
    • The South , which runs from Virginia south to Florida and west as far as central Texas. This region also includes West Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Arkansas, Louisiana, and parts of Missouri and Oklahoma.
    • The Midwest , a broad collection of states sweeping westward from Ohio to Nebraska and including Michigan, Indiana, Wisconsin, Illinois, Minnesota, Iowa, parts of Missouri, North Dakota, South Dakota, Kansas, and eastern Colorado.

The village of Chicago became the country's second largest city in 1889 because it captured many of the fastest-growing sectors of that economy. Businessmen and politicians enhanced Chicago's geographical position at the eastern edge of the nation's agricultural heartland, making it the center of multiple transportation networks. These supported wholesale trade and manufacturing which spurred the city's growth. Industry determined the physical development of the city itself, preempting space for zones of commerce and manufacturing and channeling the expansion of residential neighborhoods. During the twentieth century, new economic trends undermined Chicago's position; decentralization favored suburbs over cities, and the rise of the South and West created new centers of competition for the most dynamic sectors of the economy. Chicago developed because its site was convenient for commerce. For hundreds of years, American Indians gathered each summer to trade where the
