"Old Kaskaskia, the seat of the empire of France in America in the seventeenth century, the point contended for by Spain for many years, the western stronghold of the British at the beginning of the revolutionary war, but captured by Colonel George Rogers Clark, and held ever afterward by the Colonists, the earliest settlement in the Mississippi Valley, the first captial of Illinois and the home of many of her greatest sons, has been much written about, and yet the public knows little about this place than of any other old historic landmark in the country"...excerpt The Daily Inter Ocean, Chicago, October 6, 1883
The village of Kaskaskia is located in Randolph County. Many of the early French, Indian and Colonial settlers lived in Kaskaskia, and the village was, at one time, the center of Illinois travel, business and affairs. It is now a State landmark where visitors can find historic remnants regarding Kaskaskia's history.

The Database contains information about each person's birthdate, deathdate, highest non-honorary degree, degree date, degree place, degree advisor, scientific accomplishments, and references from which the information was compiled. Hi, my name is Nancy Piper and I am the host for Putnam, Bureau, Woodford, LaSalle and Marshall Counties. My ancestors came to Illinois over 150 years ago and settled in the tiny village of Florid, which is no longer even a name on a map. I've always been a "history buff" and these pages let me help share the world my "findings". On these pages you will find the information pertaining to the history of Putnam County. Our goal is to have available free of charge as much information as possible and will be adding continuously to these pages, so check back often. Due to increased responsibility and I change in hours at my "regular" job, I am unable to do any personal research. NOTICE:

After WWII My Pop,"Buck Beck" and Grand Dad, "Ewen Beck" Decided to visit the old folks at Herrick. The roads were awful and I would have stayed home. However someone mentioned "we were to see Oz" A 10 year old never dreamed a better dream. Ozero Beck was my Grand Dad's Uncle. Being a city Kid I truely was in the Land Of Oz. Uncle Oz allowed me to ride a hog, play in the barns and ride the hay wagon. He told me tails of Oxen that were used to make the trip to South East Missouri in 1900, when John Wesley Beck took his family there to settle on Government Sale Lands. I didn't make more than three trips to Herrick but I never think of it in any other way than the land of Oz.

Research by Mrs. E. S. Walker
Published by the Illinois Historical Association
    http://www.iltrails.org/
This material may not be copied, in whole or in part, and resubmitted to any mailing list, bulletin board, website (personal or otherwise), archive, pay per view website or published in any other manner without Illinois Trails' express, written permission Prior to 1920, the Illinois Historical Association published the research of Mr. E. S. Walker, regarding the Revolutionary War soldiers that were buried in Illinois. We hope to complete this project, listing all soldiers by county listed in Mrs. Walker's research.
Also included here is a listing of Revolutionary Soldiers buried in Illinois from the "Genealogical Records, Illinois, 1938-1938, Illinois Society DAR" book compiled by Mrs. Edward J. Filbey and transcribed by Kim.
Introduction, circa 1912 Illinois can claim but few spots famous in the era of the American Revolution; but around the names of old Fort Massac, Kaskaskia and Fort Gage, cluster priceless historic memories. Now that Fort Massac has become the property of the State of Illinois, and has been transformed into a beautiful State Park, the people of the entire State may take pride in its preservation. To The D. A. R. of Illinois, this old fort becomes a point of more than ordinary interest; it was fitting that they should have been actively engaged in building a Monument there, which stands to-day an object lesson for us and for future generations, a reminder of what George Rogers Clark and his band of faithful followers did for the nation, for Virginia, Kentucky, Illinois, Indiana, and the whole Northwest.
