Updated September 11, 2005 Hi, my name is Nancy Piper and I am the host for Putnam, Bureau, Woodford, LaSalle and Marshall Counties. My ancestors came to Illinois over 150 years ago and settled in the tiny village of Florid, which is no longer even a name on a map. I've always been a "history buff" and these pages let me help share the world my "findings". On these pages you will find the information pertaining to the history of Marshall County. Our goal is to have available free of charge as much information as possible and will be adding continuously to these pages, so check back often. Due to increased responsibility and I change in hours at my "regular" job, I am unable to do any personal research. NOTICE:
Because of spam email, I have had to put a code on my emails.
IN ORDER FOR ME TO RECEIVE AN EMAIL FROM YOU, YOU MUST INCLUDE THE INITIALS NJP in the subject line.

The Genealogy Society of Southern Illinois
  • The Genealogy Society of Southern Illinois (GSSI) was organized in Carterville, Illinois in March 1973, for the purpose of encouraging the science of genealogy; helping others gather genealogical information; and preserving, protecting, and publishing information of importance to Southern Illinois genealogy. GSSI includes in its geographic area the twenty-eight counties of Illinois south of interstate 70: Alexander, Clay, Clinton, Edwards, Franklin, Gallatin, Hamilton, Hardin, Jackson, Jefferson, Johnson, Lawrence, Marion, Massac, Monroe, Perry, Pope, Pulaski, Randolph, Richland, Saline, St. Clair, Union, Wabash, Washington, Wayne, White, and Williamson. The Society issues a monthly Newsletter , and publishes a quarterly journal, The Saga of Southern Illinois , both of which are distributed to all members of the society. In addition, GSSI has an extensive list of book publications relating to the Southern Illinois region. Meetings are held on the second Sunday of each month in the GSSI library section of John A. Logan College in Carterville, Illinois, except in July, August, and October. On meeting days the GSSI Executive Board convenes at 1 p.m. and the general meeting, which includes a speaker or panel, begins at 2:15. The genealogy library is open on those days for browsing and research from 12:30 to 4 p.m. The October meeting is an all day conference and book fair co-sponsored by John A. Logan College held on the college campus, traditionally on the second Saturday of the month.
