State-wide Resources Genealogy in the IL State Archives IL Records and Depository System Cyndi's List: Illinois Brief History of the State The first Europeans to explore what is now Illinois were Frenchmen Jacques Marquette and Louis Jolliet, who reached the area in 1673. The area was controlled by the French until 1763, and was then controlled by the British. In 1778 it came under the control of the Commonwealth of Virginia. The Territory of Illinois was created by an act of Congress in 1809. On December 3, 1818, Illinois became the 21st state admitted to the union.

Genealogical Researchers at the Illinois State Archives will assist patrons with genealogical research free of charge, although there is a fee for photocopying. This archives contains mainly state records of permanent value, but also has some federal and local records. Archives staff jreinhardt@ilsos.net can assist with state and federal censuses, military service records, WW I draft registrations, veterans' homes, death records between 1915-1947, and early Illinois land sales. Please send only one e-mail question at a time. Search below before you request help.
