Teacher Aides get draft guidance for meeting requirements of federal No Child Left Behind Law
School districts will soon get draft guidance from the State Board of Education on ways that current teacher aides can meet the requirements of the federal No Child Left Behind law. NCLB, signed into law by President Bush January 8 of 2002, requires paraprofessionals with teaching duties hired after that date to meet specific qualifications outlined in the law. All paraprofessionals with teaching duties must meet the new requirements by January 2006. The draft guidance that the State Board approved for distribution to school districts outlines short-term and long-term procedures for teacher aides to meet the NCLB requirements. NCLB establishes three ways that teacher aides may meet the qualifications in the law:
    • Complete at least two years of postsecondary study at an institution of higher education (60 semester hours) or Obtain at least an associate's degree, or

News Board Budget Agency Information ... ISBE Home FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE            Further Information: 217/782-4648 January 4, 2002 State Board Budget Targets Funding Gap of Schools The State Board of Education today approved a recommended Fiscal Year 2003 state budget for elementary and secondary education that targets most of the state's scarce resources to address the funding gap facing schools. By realigning funding for other line items, the proposed budget would ease the funding gap by increasing General State Aid to meet the recommendations of the Education Funding Advisory Board to increase the foundation level by $120 per pupil; fully funding mandated categorical programs, such as special education and transportation; and funding teacher retirement at the statutorily required level. General State Aid, including the extension of the hold harmless provision that ensures no district gets less than in 97-98, would receive a $67.6 million increase.   The foundation level moves to $4,680 per pupil from the current level of $4,560.  Mandated categorical programs would be fully funded for the fourth straight year with a $75 million increase.  General State Aid and mandated categorical line items provide the bulk of funding local school districts receive from state appropriations.  An additional increase of $123 million would fund teacher retirement at the level set by state law.

Year after year, graduating seniors in Interdisciplinary Studies say the high level of accessibility of their professors is what they value most about their UW-Green Bay experience. Our students enjoy the same quality of teaching and one-on-one access as their on-campus counterparts because the same UW-Green Bay faculty who teach on campus also teach the Extended degree courses. Currently, about 35 UW-Green Bay professors from an array of disciplines teach in the Extended Degree Program. Breznay, Peter T.
