This acitivity is for youth groups, who are encouraged to participate in fall, winter, and spring bird censuses. When completed, the data is compiled and shared with all groups participating. Junior Winter Birdfeeder Challenge
School classes, scout troops, homeschool students and others participate in this data-gathering project which takes place from November through February. Students maintain bird feeders and make observations, and then send data in for compilation. When completed, each participating class gets a newsletter with project results, and a certificate to be duplicated for all of the students. A related art project, "After Winter, Spring," allows classes to send an art entry from their birdfeeder observations to be judged in the state-wide competition, and prizes are given to the winners.

That's what we'll have if the Capital Resources Development Corporation gets its way. The CRDC has applied for a permit to strip coal from a 643-acre area between Rice Lake State Conservation Area and Banner Marsh State Fish and Wildlife Area, just southwest of Peoria. The proposed site is less than a mile from the Illinois River. Not only would mining activity disrupt and threaten the habitats used by bald eagles, white pelicans, and many other birds and wildlife, but heavy metals and other mine waste has the potential to pollute both groundwater and waterways in the future. Local residents are also fearful that the mining may drain their wells and rupture Banner's sewage treatment plant. The two state-owned areas offer a wide range of recreational activities and nature-based tourism. This area was threatened once before, back in the early 1970's, and is now once again endangered with incompatible use of neighboring land.

A COMMITMENT TO ILLINOIS EDUCATION Barry Sweeny, President of Best Practice Resources, has been an Illinois teacher and administrator for 22 years and then worked for 6 years at two Regional Offices of Education in Illinois. He has also been a part of the three year effort to establish mandated, state-funded induction for new teachers. He lives in Wheaton, Illinois and is very committed to making education in Illinois all it can be. WHY A WEB PAGE JUST FOR ILLINOIS EDUCATORS Barry has served on all three of the Illinois State Board of Education Teacher Induction Panels meeting in 1998, 1999, and 2000. These panels have researched quality new teacher induction and mentoring programs all over the world and have developed recommendations for the ISBE and Illinois General Assembly proposing mandated mentoring programs and mentoring for every initially certified teacher in Illinois. Barry was a co-author of each of these panels final reports. Barry's knowledge of these developments led him to create this section of the web site to help Illinois educators find out about these proposed changes and to locate the resources and assistance they need to address this emerging initiative. You do not want to begin learning how to deal with this challenge should it become the law. Proactive educators and schools should take full advantage now of these resources to improve the ways in which you address the needs of your beginning teachers and support their success.
