We believe that parents and other significant adults should be the first and most influential sexuality educators of children. We support open family communication around sexuality issues, and we encourage discussion of values and ethics affecting sexuality decisions. Our programs also encourage sexual responsibility and thoughtful consideration of reproductive health issues. Planned Parenthood of East Central Illinois has a large and active education department. It serves 12,000 people a year, more than 50 of them in long-term, intensive outreach programs. Services are based at three service sites: Bloomington, Champaign, and Ottawa, although educators travel to reach a much wider geographical area. Education Resource Centers PPECI offers Education Resource Centers (ERCs) in Bloomington, Champaign, and to a limited extent, Ottawa and Effingham. ERCs contain extensive information about sexuality, reproductive health, and related topics. Information can easily be sent to other sites. Each ERC will be able to give more specific information. Resources in the ERCs include videos, books, periodicals, curricula (cannot be sent out), topic files, birth control kits, and interactive and group activities. Membership in the ERC for a minimal annual fee allows for items to be checked out at no cost.

This effort places a primary focus on helping to ensure that students with disabilities are educated in the regular education program and master the regular education curriculum, consistent with the most current federal law (Individuals with Disabilities Education Act or IDEA) and with the Corey H. Settlement Agreements. The ABLE Coalition:
Advocates Behind Legal Education
DFC encourages parents of children with disabilities to take advantage of training opportunities and join a parent support group. A parent support group will provide needed emotional support and valuable feedback and information from other parents. You will also get a better idea of systemic issues and how they impact on other children with disabilities. Parent group meetings are a great place to compare strategies and share stories from the field! Parent Training and Partnerships Project
DFC is a Parent Training and Information Center. Each Parent Training and Information Center provides training and information to parents of infants, toddlers, school-aged children, and young adults with disabilities and the professionals who work with their families.

HOW TO HELP

A Parent's Guide to Special Ed / Special Needs Part II - Resources Friends of Special Education does not endorse any of the groups or agencies listed, nor do we make any representations as to how effective or ineffective they are in providing services. The following list of resources includes federal, state and local agencies mandated to provide services to children with special needs; legal assistance agencies and programs that specialize in special education and/or human rights/discrimination/disability issues; and advocacy and support groups. Some listings and descriptions of services provided were obtained from the Directory of Self-Help and Mutual Aid Groups (8th Ed.), 1996-97 edition of the Human Care of Metropolitan Chicago Services Directory, Directory of State Services for People with Disabilities, and a resource list compiled by the Family Resource Center on Disabilities. For some listings, there may be several addresses and phone numbers if the agency or group has several offices throughout the state. Other listings that may have more than one office may only list one address and phone number for intake and referral to the office closest to you.
