Public Opinion Data: Americans Want School Choice
In independent public opinion surveys conducted during the last several years, Americans have expressed consistent support for school choice. Support is notable even in polls whose design might be questionable or expected to elicit negative views.
Mayhem in the Middle: How middle schools have failed America, and how to make them work
It's in middle schools that U.S. student achievement "begins its fateful plunge" and "a growing number of other nations begin to outpace us in the contest for a well-educated population, skilled workforce, and long-term prosperity." From the foreward by Chester E. Finn, Jr.
A School Choice Certificate Program Could Save the State Budget $32 Million over Eight Years
NEWS FROM OTHER STATES
The basic financial calculus of a school choice certificate proposal is that if the per student cost of each child receiving a school choice certificate is less than the per student state aid cost associated with these children if they attend public schools, then the program will save the State of New Hampshire money.
Charter Schools: Findings from the City of Big Shoulders
"Last year researchers Jonah Rockoff from Columbia and Caroline Hoxby from Harvard rocked the education establishment by releasing a study on the positive effects of charter schools on student achievement in the Windy City of Chicago. They did it again this year. Their newly published study, released this fall, finds similar results – charter school students outperform comparable students in Chicago conventional public schools." The Youth Culture Survey
Working with Dr. Cathy J. Cohen from the University of Chicago, NORC will conduct the Youth Culture Survey. Young people from all over the nation will be contacted and asked to complete a telephone interview that covers political, cultural, and social ideas and experiences in order to help understand and begin to represent the perspectives and opinions of young people in the United States. Often, a youth perspective is missing in public policy debates and decisions that have significant influences on young people’s lives. Further, the researchers want to understand the connection between younger people’s attitudes and their actions. This important research effort is sponsored by the Ford Foundation, the University of Chicago, and NORC. To learn more about the Ford Foundation, please visit their website at

"The six bodies that grant accreditation to colleges and universities in the United States are near agreement on guidelines for evaluating distance education that differ from traditional accrediting standards by focusing on how much students learn. If enacted, the regional accrediting agencies would use the guidelines to set standards for granting accreditation to distance-education programs and institutions."

Accrediting Groups Issue Recommendations for Distance-Education Programs
"Representatives of the six U.S. regional accrediting bodies have finalized a set of recommendations for building and evaluating online-education programs. But the recommendations won't become accreditation standards, says Charles M. 'We've always considered them testimonials, not a new set of standards,' he says. 'It's always been the local regions' option of how to adopt them.'"

Washington, D.C. – March 21, 2005 – Nearly 150 education technology advocates from 37 states fanned out across Capitol Hill today to demonstrate to Congress their strong opposition to the Administration’s proposal to eliminate the Enhancing Education Through Technology Program (EETT). The education technology advocates held meetings with the offices of their respective Senators and US Representatives and explained how pivotal the EETT program is to complying with the No Child Left Behind Act’s goals of closing the achievement gap and ensuring that all teachers are highly qualified. The joint Advocacy Day was sponsored by the Consortium for School Networking and the International Society for Technology in Education. Advocacy Day participants, hailing from different points on the map and with vastly different technology needs, were unified in their message of support for EETT: Norton Gusky, coordinator of education technology for Fox Chapel Area School District in Pennsylvania, stated that: “EETT funds have been used to provide materials and training for teachers and administrators to deal with the mandates of
