Our list of "Most Liberal Places in America" is based not on opinion polls, which have come under fire in recent elections, but on votes, political contributions and demographics. A Curriculum of United States Labor History for Teachers. Sponsored by the Illinois Labor History Society [Table of Contents] Introduction The United States has the bloodiest history of labor of any industrialized nation on Earth. It is a story rich in human drama and tragedy. It is also one of progress and hope. This is a resource that teachers of United States history can use to incorporate our rich social and labor history into their courses. Using the ideas employed here teachers will increase student understanding of the American economic system and the important issues we all face as workers today. The concepts and lessons will build on each other so that at the end of the school year the student should have a working knowledge of the importance of labor in society. A guiding theme of this work is how laborers have earned a voice in the workplace and increased their share of the economic pie. Teachers should highlight the stark contrast between today's working environment and the relationship between workers and owners of the past. The scope of United States history has been divided into eleven basic periods. These will correspond with the unit divisions that many modern textbook companies use. In each period the main events and issues of US labor history are introduced. Concepts, ideas and resources are presented to aid the teacher. In several of the units specific lessons are available for immediate use.

Purpose and Need In the 1990s, Illinois was struggling against vanishing open spaces, decaying urban infrastructure, increased traffic congestion, and declining quality of life in many of its communities. A lack of balanced growth was seen as the key to the problem. All too often, new transportation projects failed to take into account their impact on nearby land uses, while new development projects failed to take into account the heavy demands they would place on the existing transportation system. "Collectively, we didn't see how far-reaching the impacts of our actions could be until it was too late," recalls Carl Mikyska, Corridor Planning Grant Program Manager at the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT). To address these concerns, Governor George Ryan created the Balanced Growth Cabinet in April 2000. The cabinet was intended to serve as an advisory group to the governor regarding growth and planning strategies. One of its first actions was to launch the Illinois Tomorrow Initiative, a smart growth initiative designed to ensure existing state programs affecting growth were effectively implemented, and new solutions to growth-related problems were given serious consideration. Under the initiative, a grant program was established to assist community land development and growth projects. "Urban areas have experienced phenomenal population and economic growth and that trend is projected to continue," Governor Ryan announced in January 2001 press conference. "We not only have an opportunity but a responsibility to direct that growth in a way that promotes livable communities."
