The largest city of Illinois, in the northeast part of the state on Lake Michigan. It is a major port and the commercial, financial, industrial, and cultural center of the Middle West. It is also the third-largest U.S. city. Chicago was nearly destroyed by a disastrous fire in 1871. Population: 2,860,000. Chi·ca go·an n. WORD HISTORY People from Chicago ought to like onions. The name Chicago is first recorded in 1688 in a French document, where it appears as Chigagou, an Algonquian word meaning “onion field.” In explanation of this name, the document states there that wild onion or garlic grew profusely in the area. The name of the field or meadow was first transferred to the river and then was given to the city in 1830. var tcdacmd="cc=edu;dt";

The Effects of Immigration, 1970-2020 By Leon F. Bouvier and Rosemary Jenks
Center Report
March 1996
Introduction The state has not grown much for some decades. Its 1960 population was just over ten million, compared to 11.4 million in 1990 (see Figure 1). However, it is important to bear in mind that, in reality, Illinois is a state that has long been divided within itself. Over half of all Illinoisans reside in the Chicago metropolitan area, with the remainder spread out through the rest of the state. "When the 'down-stater' visits Chicago...he travels in and out of the city by train or expressway, rarely seeing deeply into the city and the problems behind its swift-paced, modern facade. When the Chicagoan seeks a relaxing weekend, he is most likely to drive to Wisconsin or Michigan, thus never developing a feeling for the 'other Illinois.'" In this study, while we will look at the state as a whole, considerable attention will be given to the Chicago area in particular. The components of population growth are fertility, mortality and migration. This study is focused primarily on migration. Migration out of Illinois to other states has been increasing in recent years, contributing to the low population growth rate. More important, however, is immigration and how it is contributing to changes in Illinois's

by Kristyn Conner What state do you know of that was no more than a large widerness 200 years ago and today is home to the third largest city in the United States? If you haven't figured it out already, the answer is Illinois. Illinois entered the Union on December 3, 1818, making it the 21st state to join our beloved country. The name "Illinois" comes from a group of Native Americans called the Illini or the Illiniwek who inhabited the area. Besides being known as Illinois, however, this state is also called The Prairie State or the Land of Lincoln because Abraham Lincoln, 16th President of the United States, was born and raised here. Illinois ranks 25th in size out of all fifty states in the Union . It covers a total of 57,918 square miles. If you ever visit Illinois, you will know how diverse each and every single city can be. Most of the state is flat with gently rolling plains that were once covered by tall prairie grasses. Those grasses are now gone because they were cleared to make room for raising crops. In urban areas, however, the land is covered by railroads, highways, waterways, air routes, and many buildings and skyscrapers. The capital, Springfield, is a mixture of both. It is a main manufacturing and financial city as well as the richest crop-farming and livestock raising area in the U.S. In the western area of Illinois you can find the Mississippi River and to the northeast you can find a short stretch of Lake Michigan.

Ground-Water Studies in Illinois
Why do we study ground water?
Ground water is an important source of water supply in Illinois. About 2.5 million people in Illinois are supplied from ground-water resources. Total ground-water withdrawals in the State was approximately 953 million gallons per day in 1995. Ground-water withdrawals account for about 21 percent of the total water withdrawn for public-water supplies in Illinois. Tens of thousands of persons in the State rely on ground water from residential wells as their sole source of water. The largest amount of ground-water withdrawals is in the northern one-third of the State where large supplies of potable water are available in aquifers that range in depth from about 10 feet to about 1,500 feet. Ground-water quality is a major concern in Illinois. Water-quality degradation or contamination results from point and nonpoint sources throughout the State. In many industrialized parts of the State, including the metropolitan areas of Chicago, Rockford, and St. Louis, ground water in aquifers in the glacial deposits and bedrock has been degraded by improperly contained or disposed chemicals. In many agricultural areas, the quality of ground water in the underlying shallow aquifers has been degraded by the routine application of agricultural chemicals. Surface-water quality has been degraded in some areas because of the influx of contaminated ground water.
