Plunging In: Adjusting to the Northwestern Culture by Lauren Murrow and Cara Walsh Now that the fall quarter has ended, the realities of life at Northwestern have set in. Bi-weekly exams, eccentric roommates, and blustery lakefront weather all bring major adjustments to inexperienced students. Curriculum Considerations Supreeti Behuria had 14 people in her high school senior class at boarding school in India. Her intro-level chemistry class fall quarter at Northwestern contained 500. Although she was accepted into many colleges in the United States, Behuria said she chose Northwestern because it had the best academic reputation. The demanding pace of the quarter system is a major source of concern for students, said Greg Cera, assistant director at the University Academic Advising Center. Some students said they feel the pressure of studying for midterms just two weeks before finals, and material is often more condensed than it would be in a semester system, he said. But Cera said the quarter system allows for a wider variety of course and gives students room to try out classes that interest them.

Native children were taken away from their families and communities, which caused a destruction within families, a destruction within tribes and also added to the destruction of the Native community as a whole. Authors' note: This March, Debbie Reese (Nambe), a doctoral student who studies representations of Native Americans in children's literature, saw My Heart Is On the Ground: The Dairy of Nannie Little Rose, a Sioux Girl in a local bookstore. She picked it up, put it down in distaste, but then decided it couldn't be ignored. Reading through the book, she was outraged and called Beverly Slapin of Oyate and read excerpts to her. Beverly did not look forward to reading it herself. A day later and equally outraged, Beverly called it the "worst book she had ever read." Both women began talking about this book to colleagues. Debbie wrote to Barb Landis, a research specialist on Carlisle School, the Native American boarding school that is at the core of the book. Barb had also read the book and also felt it was an outrageous depiction of a tragic period in Native American history. We are fully aware we have used the word "outraged" three times in this piece so far, but there is no other word that captures the intensity of emotion we all feel about this book. Board member asks what's the deal with posters I am a board of ed member in [a Chicago suburb], and am wondering where the current craze for having students spend an inordinate amount of their time making posters came from. I appreciate the fact that some small percentage of them will become graphic artists, but I question the value for just about everyone else. I recall last year an 8th grade poster my son had to do for a book he'd read. The requirement was to think of 8 different phrases that would describe one of the main characters in the book, and then find those words in magazines (of course, newspapers were not allowed because the print isn't "shiny"), and place them on the poster. The rubric was that the letters had to be of a certain size, so that people in the back could still read them. They had to be of complimentary colors, to produce an overall esthetic effect. They had to be of different styles, so one wouldn't become bored seeing the poster. I could go on and on..... I had no problem with reading a book, obviously. I had no problem with finding key words or phrases to describe one of the characters. I did have a problem with sitting on Mother's Day all day on the floor helping my son find these particular words in magazines. The net effect, other than a very sore back and a short temper, was that the posters ended up looking like ransom letters. I should have complained on the fact that that may promote violence amongst the student population.

Colleges and Schools Cherry Grove Scene of 1st Schoolhouse Six years before the community of Abingdon was founded the family of Joseph Latimer migrated from the Volunteer State of Tennessee in 1830 to a place which later became known as Cherry Grove, Knox County. Here in the same year when her immigrants were laying the cornerstones of Abingdon community just barely a mile north of Cherry Grove, Latimer established the first school in Abingdon area. In June 1835 the Cherry Grove Cumberland Presbyterian Church was set up in Latimer's residence. In 1836 a church building was built and at the same time the school held in Latimer's house contained the name of Cherry Grove Seminary. It was a boarding school and had children of all ages. Interest Increases When interest in education and the population in the Abingdon area increased, a two-story frame building was erected near Latimer's house in 1849 to be used both as a church and a school. That year about 100 pupils registered in the school. The seminary lasted in Cherry Grove for 30 years. In 1866 the Cumberland Presbyterian Church established a college in Lincoln and this institution was to take the place of the Cherry Grove Seminary and two other small educational institutions supported by the church in Illinois. Thus the seminary closed that year and its records were transferred to the new college. While in its bloom, the Cherry Grove school had students from Iowa, Missouri, Kentucky, central Illinois and a great number from the neighboring community - Abingdon.

It was determined that Nathan Day will go to trial for allegedly beating a student at his boarding school. The date for arraignment and setting request for trial was set for May 5 in a Pulaski County court. Judge Wiggins will preside. After a civil suit was filed by a former student's mother, Pulaski County Prosecuting Attorney Laura Kriebs filed child abuse charges against Day in August 2003. Day allegedly beat at least one of his boarders, 16-year-old Christopher Jensen, of Marseilles, Ill. According to investigators with the Missouri State Highway Patrol, Day tied Jansen to the back of a lawn mower and an all-terrain vehicle and made him run behind it. The investigators continued that each time Jansen fell he was dragged a few feet before Day would stop. In the petition filed last August by Jansen's mother, Deborah Stedman, there were several incidents of abuse while Jansen was in their care.

"It offered employees facing layoffs the chance to work at nonprofits for a third of their pay-and the hope of returning to the company one day." Many of the fellows went to nonprofits Cisco had already worked with to develop Internet technology on-site, while others went to work for nonprofits with no Cisco ties. The Cisco-turned-nonprofit employees had a great impact. Their projects included helping Catholic Charities of Santa Clara County in California create an information system that tracks the group's 30,000 clients, and giving Second Harvest Food Bank a total tech makeover that "can alert Second Harvest to sudden changes in demand and other trends." He’s an ethnic minority member." That’s how the former Vietnamese headmaster was introduced to Church World Service’s representative in Vietnam, Joanne Fairley. It’s hardly the first thing you’re told when meeting someone, but Tien’s minority status is significant for several reasons. Improving services for ethnic minorities has been a CWS goal since 1990. Before that, the organization had already contributed over $8 million to the country’s post-war reconstruction, after resettling over 80,000 Vietnamese refugees. More than a third of CWS Vietnam’s $1.4 million budget for the next three years — funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture — is aimed at educational support for ethnic minority students. Ethnic minorities make up 20 percent of Vietnam’s 77 million people. They speak more than a dozen distinct languages and many dialects. Eleven groups have their own writing systems. Although animistic beliefs are common, a large number are Catholics or Protestants, while the Khmer practice Buddhism and the Cham are Hindu or Muslim.
