Uxmal: "don't upset the iguanas"
8 March 2003 I'm a little late posting this; got distracted by Martin Bashir's Michael Jackson interview, which Televisa aired tonight. Nevertheless, still buzzing from our visit Friday afternoon to the majestic late Classic Mayan site at Uxmal in the Puuc hills. We left at 2:45pm and reached the site little more than an hour later, passing many tour buses travelling in the opposite direction. For an hour we gawped in awe at the Pyramid of the Magician The setting sun cast a warm glow on the 1,000 year old structures and intensified their elegant sense of geometry. Pets Gone Wild: Iguanas Spread Rapidly In South Florida
Filed under Research on Monday, January 31, 2005. Wild adult iguanas, which can be dangerous, never tame sufficiently and rarely make acceptable pets, he said. Iguanas eat valuable landscape plants, shrubs and trees as well as orchids and many other flowers. They do not eat citrus, but they like fruit such as berries, figs, mangoes, tomatoes, bananas and lychees, Kern said. Mike Maunder, director of Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden in Coral Gables, said hundreds of iguanas in its garden are a major problem because they feed on important plant collections. Maunder said their plant collection will be subject to continual damage from iguanas until an effective and humane management system can be initiated. Iguanas also dig burrows that undermine foundations and sidewalks, Kern said. Iguana burrows next to seawalls cause erosion and eventual collapse of the walls. Droppings from iguanas litter areas and may be a source of salmonella bacteria, which causes food poisoning.

Iguanas Selecting An Iguana
Things to Consider Before Buying an Iguana: The single most important factor in keeping a healthy iguana is to start off by selecting a healthy iguana from the beginning. The first step is to select a healthy well established juvenile that appears to be outgoing, alert and active. Their bellies and tail base should be well rounded and their bodies should be free of lumps, bumps, scrapes and scratches. Always check their vent for a build up of dried fecal matter and look for any swelling in the limbs. Their eyes should be well rounded and they should move about in the cage flicking their tongues. A healthy young iguana will be curious about its surrounding and will not be lying on the floor of its enclosure. Natural History
Male and Female Iguanas
Mating
Iguanas mate in January or February. After a pregnancy of about 2 months, the female digs in moist sand or soil, usually near the base of a tree, and deposits 25-45 eggs. The hatchlings, measuring 25-30 centimeters long, emerge in about 2 weeks. They grow 15-24 centimeters a year and attain sexual maturity in about 3 years. An interesting, but unfortunate, fact is that the iguana is widely hunted throughout its range for its tender white flesh and for its alleged aphrodisiac properties. Central American natives refer to the green iguana as "bamboo chicken". Because it is timid and relatively slow, it is easily captured. Its eggs are also collected and eaten by local hunters.

Endangered in Galapagos Courtesy of The Charles Darwin Foundation for the Galapagos

Land Iguanas resemble mythical creatures from the past - dragons with long tails, clawed feet and spiny crests. In reality these harmless lizards are alive today, but endangered in their own native land - Galapagos. TERRITORIALITY The males defend specific areas, which usually include more than one female. Male iguanas can be highly aggressive towards each other. Territorial displays involve rapid nodding of the head and, sometimes, biting and tail-thrashing battles.

Leaping Lizards: Pet Iguanas Can Grow To 6 Feet
COLLEGE STATION - Kittens grow up to be cats, and puppies grow up to be dogs.
And then there's iguanas - they can grow up to be the size of a small alligator. This and other important facts should be carefully considered before making an iguana part of your household.
"Under the right conditions, iguanas can live eight to 12 years and grow up to six feet long."
In Texas' moderate climate, iguanas can thrive outdoors, but they still require a few special arrangements. According to Binkley-Hodges, iguanas require a temperature range of 65 to 95 degrees Fahrenheit. This can be achieved by locating iguana enclosures where they can receive both shade and direct sunlight.
Thermometers should be placed at both ends of the enclosure and monitored to ensure temperatures do not fluctuate beyond these parameters, Binkley-Hodges adds. To maintain a safe environment, make arrangements for indoor housing for your iguana for the winter.
"Since iguanas are cold-blooded, they need light to regulate their body temperatures and to process food properly," said Binkley-Hodges.

http://www.greenigsociety.org/adoptanig.htm
If you are interested in adopting or rescuing any iguana, please make sure you learn as much as possible about the proper care they require. Even experienced iguana owners can learn more and we urge all iguana owners to continue learning more. We strongly urge you to read the information on the following pages before you consider adopting or rescuing any iguana....
The iguanas available for adoption or rescue are listed on our adoption board The Green Iguana Society is not a shelter. We are solely a group of on-line volunteers. We do not personally take in iguanas as a part of our affiliation with GIS. We do not have a veterinarian on our team. We have no regular source of income, and cannot assist individuals or organizations with any of their expenses. All iguanas listed are in the care of either their current owners or a temporary foster parent. All iguanas require an adoption application to be filled out and submitted to us. We will forward your completed application to the owner/caretaker of the iguana you are interested in. Some owners have asked us to screen potential adopters, for which we will forward completed applications along with our comments, thoughts, and suggestions, based on the answers provided in the application. The Green Iguana Society would like to thank you for helping us find homes for these iguanas.
NOTE ON SHIPPING IGUANAS: Shipping iguanas has become extremely difficult and the Green Iguana Society highly recommends that people adopt an iguana that is within driving distance.

Editor's Review Artist's Description
The Iguanas continue their illustrious underground trajectory as the renowned house band for the world party. They blend elements of brown-eyed soul with traditional Americana for a dual-saxophone, dance-floor-filling sound. After more than a decade of rocking, the Iguanas are nowhere near slowing down. Most bands start repeating themselves long before they pass the decade mark, so at 13, the Iguanas can certainly be forgiven for reuniting with their first producer to make an album that’s a marked departure from all four of their previous studio recordings.

Jamaican iguana making a comeback
(CNN) Biologists at Jamaica's Hope Zoo are working to bring the nation's largest native land animal, the Jamaican iguana, back from the brink of extinction. Until a hunter's dog cornered one of the iguanas in 1990, the rare reptile hadn't been seen in about 50 years. The zoo biologists are now raising the lizards and preparing them for reentry into the wild. CNN's Natalie Pawelski looks at the iguanas fight for life. The Newsletter of the Colorado Herpetological Society
Volume 28, Number 7; July, 2001
Iguanas in Heat
Reprinted from Ark'Type , the Newsmagazine of the WSPCR (the Westcoast Society for the Protection and Conservation of Reptiles), February/March 2001 Domestic iguanas go into their breeding season at any point of the year, but spring always seems to be the time when a majority of iguanas enter their cycle. Some iguanas will not go through a noticeable breeding season, while others will be very noticeable! Often poor health or an enclosure that is too small will prevent the cycle. This is for the best (though even unhealthy iguanas may try to lay eggs and this can be fatal) since a female needs to be in optimum health to survive egg production, which she will do with or without a male to copulate with (the eggs of course would not be fertile if there was no copulation). Often an increase in the health or environment of an iguana will spontaneously stimulate the onset of breeding season. This is common in a rescued iguana or an iguana who suddenly gets exposed to proper UV (or even just boosted UV such as when the old UV light is replaced). Age-wise an iguana typically reaches sexual maturity by 2 years. Size, however, rather than age is the true measure of sexual maturity. A snout to vent length of six inches in a male and 10 inches in a female makes them big enough to start cycling.
