The green iguana (Iguana iguana) has always been one of the most popular reptiles kept in captivity, but recently interest in these beautiful animals has increased even more. Approximately 2 million baby iguanas were legally imported into the United States between 1989 and 1994. Iguanas attain impressive size and coloration, are easy to maintain, and many become "tame" with proper handling. The escalating popularity of this big, beautiful lizard may be explained in part by the influence of the film Jurassic Park and by current popular interest in dinosaurs and reptile keeping as a hobby. In recent years, healthy hatchlings raised on Latin American iguana farms have become quite affordable and widely available. If you are serious about owning an iguana, invest in a good care book and read it thoroughly. With proper care, iguanas are hardy and long-lived in captivity, and may provide endless opportunities for students to study the biology and complex behaviors of one of the more fascinating and spectacular lizard species.

On their fifth album since 1993, New Orleans' Iguanas swing even closer to the Latin/Mexican Los Lobos sound they have referenced previously. The more prominent yet still bubbling-under percussion and a low-boil, near ominous feel on tracks like "Mexican Candy" can easily be mistaken for East L.A.'s Lobos. Plight of the iguana: Studies of the Galapagos population show that the herbivorous reptiles shrank as much as 2.7 inches, or 20 percent of their body length. January 7, 2000
Web posted at: 1:12 p.m. EST (1812 GMT) By Environmental News Network staff Nature MESSAGE BOARD Evolution In two studies of Galapagos marine iguanas, one spanning 18 years and the other occupying eight years, scientists found that the herbivorous reptiles shrank as much as 2.7 inches, or 20 percent of their body length. "Many people working with amphibians have seen this phenomenon but have not reported it because they don't believe it, or because the thinking is that vertebrates can't shrink," said Judy Stamps, a professor of evolution and ecology at the University of California at Davis. "In 1997-98, the animals had shrunk too much to ignore," he said. "We thought this couldn't be an artifact, so we plotted out the data. It turned out to be very interesting."

Pet Sitting is a great alternative to kenneling your pet or having your neighbors or friends watch your pet.
Kennels restrict pick up times, they can be very expensive, they usually do not conform to our pets schedules and most importantly they often make our pets uncomfortable by being away from home.
Asking neighbors or friends to watch your pets can create a difficult situation because you often feel like you are imposing on them, so you don't lay out clear guidlines as to what you want, how many visitis you want, and how often they need to be feed and walked.
Consider Pet Sitting. Your pet stays at home, where he or she is comfortable. When you arrange for us to visit your pet, feed your pet, and exercise your pet you arrange them based on your pets schedules, not at the whim of the kennels, and not when your neighbor or friend remembers to show up.

BellaOnline's Reptiles and Amphibians Editor Metabolic bone disease in Iguanas (MBD)
Signs that your iguana may have Metabolic Bone Disease include:
-hard protruding lumps on the back, tail, joints and legs.
-Brittle bones that break easily.
-swelling of the jaw area. -malformed legs -difficulty walking, eating Most of this can not be corrected once it has already happened. But, Adding these provisions now will help prevent furthur deteriation. The best way to prevent this from happening to your iguana is to make sure it recieves 8 to 14 hours of UVB light.Flouresent bulbs with full spectrum, UVB 8% and UVA light can be found at petstores online or at home ,and also at some home and hardware stores. The other place to expose your iguana to UVB light is with direct sunlight. That means it can not be filtered through glass. So if your cage is by a window that is not UVB light. If you live in a warm enough climate you can build or puchase a screened cage to take your iguana outide during the day. Be sure to provide a shelter in case your pet gets too hot.

The Sanctuary - Home for Abandoned Animals
Welcome to the virtual home of our Sanctuary for Abandoned Animals!
Our Cover Kids Sam and Camellia, Raga and Bruce lay together in the Downstairs Warren. They are four of more than two hundred and fifty Animals who have found their way to The Sanctuary. Camellia, one of the butterscotch colored Rabbits, was one of 23 Rabbits who were rescued from a Golf Course where many had been born after residents near the course dumped adult Rabbits. Her apparent twin, Samantha, is really not a relation. Sam along with her three sisters were found in a box in a shopping center's parking lot. Luckily, concerned employees of nearby stores called the Shelter and Humane Officers were able to pick them up quickly. One of her sisters, Spot can be seen on our Rabbit's Page
Bruce and Raga are related, sister and brother, though they came from different litters. The humans who were responsible for allowing their parents to breed were desperate to place them along with their siblings. They claimed, and this is a direct quote, "We didn't know what would happen if you put a male and a female together." It took them five litters to figure it out.
The Sanctuary no longer accepts Animals from private individuals. We are committed to working with our local Shelter, where we are making a real difference for the abandoned Rabbits and other Animals in our community.

After several weeks of debating I finally decided to give Spike to someone who could spend more time with her and take better care of her and also give her more room than what I could provide (Free Roam). I really hated doing it since I had her so long but I just felt it was the best thing. With that said I do not know that I should keep the website up now since I have no Iguana.
I have left the ICQ Mailing list alone and will leave it there forever if nobody objects, Since it pretty much takes care of itself. Either that or someone on the list can take it over for me. Same goes for the ICQ List, just send me e-mail

http://www.usask.ca/wcvm/herdmed/applied-ethology/behaviourproblems/iguana.html
Physical Aggression in Captive Iguanas
As iguanas grow in popularity, due mainly to their personality (Iguanality), unusual looks, and low maintenance and spatial requirements, the chances of physical aggression between iguanas and owners becomes more likely. Iguanas are usually shy, passive, solitary creatures, but under the right conditions, they can aggressively defend themselves. Physical aggression in iguanas usually manifests itself in the form of biting or tail wiping (neither of these should be taken lightly as the whip-like tail of an Iguana could seriously injure an eye and their jaws are strong enough to sever a mouse's head from it's body in a single bite). There appears to be two basic reasons for why iguanas can become physically aggressive towards their owners; defensive response to a stressful situation and sexual aggression. Both of these situations can easily be avoided.
Aggression due to Stressful Situations (Fear and Discomfort)
Sexual Aggression
The key to avoiding physical aggression in your iguana is to have a basic understanding of iguanas in general, as well as keen understanding of the "iguanality" of your particular animal. Pay close attention to your iguana and remember to always approach and handle your iguana with care . Further reading that may help you in your understanding of your iguana can be found in a book called, Iguanas: A Guide To Their Biology and Captive Care, by Frye and Townsend. In addition, you may want to read the information provided by Patrick J. Morris, D.V.M. from the San Diego Zoo, Department of Veterinary Services on

Iguanas
The Green Iguana (Iguana iguana) is the largest of the family (growing up to 6.5 feet) in Central America. It is found in low elevation forests, often in trees on the banks of rivers but occasionally on the ground. It feeds mostly on leaves and flowers but will also eat insects. When threatened, Iguanas will let themselves drop from trees into the river where they will escape underwater. Iguanas are one of the popular animals that visitors to Belize hope to observe and photograph. We asked our guide Pedro from Blue Creek to take us on his naturalist hunt. Twice I went, and twice I was amazed by this fantastic experience. If the following text and photos pique your curiosity, there's only one solution, go to Blue Creek and ask Pedro to guide you.
Hunting History
Throughout history, many people in Latin America have fed and still feed on iguanas. The ancient Mayas were believed to eat iguana meat regularly, the remains of which were found next to major excavation sites. Today Mayan people still feed on iguanas and their eggs in many places, but in Blue Creek where the population around the river is dense, guides like Pedro prefer to protect them and only do catch and release for enthusiastic visitors.

Marine Iguanas When Charles R. Darwin (1809-1882), a British scientist best known for his thoughts on the theory of evolution and natural selection, visited the Galapagos Islands, he described the marine iguana as "a hideous-looking creature, of a dirty black color, stupid and sluggish in its movements."
Are marine iguanas really as Darwin clamed them to be? Well, to be fair, marine iguanas are not pretty. But, Darwin's assessment of marine iguanas' low intelligence and clumsiness is unnecessarily harsh.
Like all reptiles, marine iguanas cover their bodies with scales. To add a ferocious look, they have pointy spines running from the top of their heads, down along their backs, to the base of their tails. Their snouts are blunt, and their faces are white. The light color on their faces, however, is not their natural appearance. Rather, it is the result of excessive salts expelled from marine iguanas' salt glands near their nostrils.
