Naturalists initially thought damage had been avoided
Scientists say an oil spill off the Galapagos Islands last year has caused the death of more than 60% of marine iguanas - a species unique to the Pacific Ocean islands. The spill happened when an Ecuadorian oil tanker ran aground in January 2001 depositing around three million litres of crude oil into the sea.
We came back after a year and were astonished to find a large number of skeletons on the coast
Scientist Martin Wikelski Yet compared with other tanker accidents, the concentrations of oil found just offshore were fairly small, and the prevailing view at the time was that Santa Fe, one of the Galapagos Islands, had escaped serious contamination. But now researchers have concluded that even this small amount of pollution can have severe effects on wild animals.

84. The Jamaican Iguana Page
A page dedicated to the conservation of these wonderful lizards. Also has a forum pertaining to all subspecies of iguanas and Iguana breeding, or keeping.
http://www.kingsnake.com/iguana/index.html

The Jamaican Iguana belongs to the subfamily Iguaninae, within the family of Iguanid lizards comprising 31 species. Many of these lizards attain very large body size and all feed predominantly on plants. The genus Cyclura has eight species and is restricted to the northern part of the Caribbean. The Jamaican Iguana is endemic to Jamaica and reaches a body length of up to 150cm. or more, making it the islands largest native land animal. It was believed extinct since a remnant population on Goat Island, off Jamaica's south coast, disappeared in the 1940's. However, a carcass of one was discovered in the Jamaica's Hellshire Hills in 1970. Then in June 1990 a hunter and his dog cornered a male specimen which was brought to Hope Zoo. As a result the Jamaican Iguana Research and Conservation Group was founded. Supported by large numbers of volunteers, some 7500 man hours were spent methodically surveying the forest. Animals heard and seen provided estimates of at least 15 iguanas surviving in the area and the very first photographs of Jamaican iguanas were taken in the wild. The Hellshire Hill's, which represent an outstanding example of unspoilt dry limestone forest, are located west of Kingston, froming a peninisula which measures abou 10 x 15km. The area where most sightings have been made is some 4 kilometers long, much of which forms a steep sided natural crater.

Iguanas - Reptiles - Distribution
There exist many subspecies of Iguanas, some of which are unknown to people. The most popular are Green Iguanas, which are found in the rainforests of Central and South America and in drier areas along the coast. They can live high up in the trees or near the ground as their green stripped coloring blends with its natural habitat. There are also Marine Iguanas that are found in Galapagos Islands. They prefer rocky coasts, mangrove swamps, and beaches. Our prehistoric ancestors hunted iguanas for food, today some tribes still eat Iguanas.

Iguana males are large and bright, and the females are smaller and gray or black in color. Males have harems of several females and protect them from other males. Fights are occasional and harmless. The breeding season lasts for three months. Iguanas reproduce prolifically: mature females produce up to 30 eggs per year for about 10 years. The eggs are laid in sand-filled chambers or in volcanic ash.

Caring for Green Iguanas Ron Hines DVM PhD 7/27/04 Iguanas have become a common pet in the US. These pet iguanas are being collected in South and Central America. Iguanas grow into very impressive pets when kept in captivity. Pet Iguanas are vegetarian lizards. Pet Iguanas adapt to temperature conditions in most of the United States if suplementary sources of heat are provided. Iguanas do best when kept alone. Pet iguanas are very territorial and maintain their agressiveness in captivity. Pet store iguanas are recent hatchlings. Pet iguanas should not receive animal protein in their diets. Pet iguanas do best when kept in a terrarium when small. Pet iguanas suffer most from nutritional deficiencies. General
About a third of green iguanas (Iguana iguana) sold in pet stores survive to maturity. This is due to the stress these creatures receive during transport from South and Central America and inadequate care and nutrition. Of those that survive, more than half are surrendered to rescue agencies or simply abandoned due to their large size, activity and aggressiveness. So one should think twice about purchasing the cute, baby iguanas for sale inexpensively at pet shops. Given good environment and diet, they rapidly grow into formidable pets. Caging Requirements
The best cleaning and sanitizing agent is a 1:20 solution of common household bleach and water.

    • Remember that green iguanas start out as small, cute babies ( figure A ) but they can reach a length of six feet ( figure B )! Are you sure you want a pet of that size?
    • Do lots of research on iguanas before you make up your mind. There are many good books available that cover all aspects of raising these animals,
    • You should also find a vet before you bring an iguana home: don't wait until you've already adopted the animal to start looking for an expert.
    • How do you know whether your child is ready to take on the responsibility for the care of an iguana? Since all iguanas can carry salmonella, ask yourself this: Is my child responsible enough to wash her hands every time she's touched her pet?
    • Also try this test: Let her grow a sunflower from a seed (or a pot of catnip, if you don't have a yard). If she can nurture the plant from a seed to full growth, she may be ready to assume the care of an iguana.
    • Finally, decide whether you want to buy your iguana from a pet store. A better choice might be to rescue a "used" one one that's been given up for adoption.

    Iguanas
The Green Iguana (Iguana iguana) is the largest of the family (growing up to 6.5 feet) in Central America. It is found in low elevation forests, often in trees on the banks of rivers but occasionally on the ground. It feeds mostly on leaves and flowers but will also eat insects. When threatened, Iguanas will let themselves drop from trees into the river where they will escape underwater. Iguanas are one of the popular animals that visitors to Belize hope to observe and photograph. We asked our guide Pedro from Blue Creek to take us on his naturalist hunt. Twice I went, and twice I was amazed by this fantastic experience. If the following text and photos pique your curiosity, there's only one solution, go to Blue Creek and ask Pedro to guide you.
    Hunting History
Throughout history, many people in Latin America have fed and still feed on iguanas. The ancient Mayas were believed to eat iguana meat regularly, the remains of which were found next to major excavation sites. Today Mayan people still feed on iguanas and their eggs in many places, but in Blue Creek where the population around the river is dense, guides like Pedro prefer to protect them and only do catch and release for enthusiastic visitors.

    Are Iguanas good pets?
How to properly care for a pet iguana.
Iguanas are not easy to care for. The iguana has become a very popular pet but few people are aware of the difficulty of caring for them. Iguanas are very expensive to care for. They require a very large cage, a varied fresh diet, proper temperatures and UV lighting. Adult iguanas can become very aggressive. UV light An iguana requires at least 2-3 hours of direct UV light a day. If they don’t receive this light through direct sunshine they must receive it through artificial UV-B lights. Direct sunshine means direct, not through glass. Iguanas that don’t receive UV lighting will suffer from MBD (metabolic bone disease). Without UV light iguanas will also have off-colored skin, shedding problems, and appetite problems. If artificial UV-B is used the iguana will need a full day’s lighting. A full day’s worth of lighting is a twelve-hour light cycle. The UV-B tubes must be no further than 18” away from the iguana for the iguana to receive the UV effect from the light. The reason why UV light is so important to the iguana is that the UV light triggers the release of vitamin D3. Vitamin D3 is the vitamin that allows the absorption of calcium. Iguanas cannot utilize dietary D3; in fact it can be harmful. They must receive it from UV radiation
