The iguanas of the world are a truly unique group of animals inhabiting North, Central and South America, the Galapagos islands, the Antilles, and Fiji and Tonga.
They are among the most endangered of the world's creatures, primarily because much of their habitat has been eliminated by human develop-
ment or severely degraded by invasive species. Because iguanas are likely to be important seed dispersers for many native plants, their loss has serious consequences for the ecosystems to which they belong. IUCN SSC Iguana Specialist Group

Through partnerships with government agencies, conservation organizations, and research institutions, the IUCN Iguana Specialist Group seeks to help design and implement immediate and effective conservation measures for this magnificent group of lizards. Thank you for visiting!

n a ledge in a cliff face, a small brown iguana raises his head and says to the chartreuse iguana perched above him, "So, you wanna piece of me or what?" Soon the iguanas, joined by some toucans and macaws, burst into song: "Right here in the jungle mon, that's the life for me." Lights strobe, the toucans flap their wings, and the iguanas bob their robotic heads. On cue, waiters and waitresses join in the singing, waving strips of brightly colored fabric. A toucan shouts, "Hasta la vista baby!" as our waiter leans over and asks, "Who had the shrimp?"
Coming here was my idea. I had returned to Salt Lake City from a summer of outdoor experiences while millions of my fellow humans tuned into "Survivor" and hundreds stood in line at the new Mayan theme restaurant in the suburbs. A combination of stifling late August temperatures, unhealthy levels of smoggy ozone, and thick smoke from dozens of wildfires raging in the West left me feeling lethargic and listless. I called a colleague. "Chris," I said, "as people who teach environmental communication, we really ought to check out this restaurant with the Mayan jungle theme." To my surprise, she didn't hesitate.
Our table is on the third level of the restaurant next to a railing with a good view down to the "stage," a cliff face about two stories high adorned with tropical plants made of plastic. A gentle waterfall pours from the cliff into a large aqua pool. The rocks are molded concrete and the pool reeks of chlorine. Under clear resin, our tabletop bears a colorful design of the Mayan alphabet and calendar. Down one level to the right is an area with carpeted steps and a large video screen playing cartoons a sideshow for children not sufficiently captivated by robotic iguanas. High above in the middle of the cliff wall is an office window, light seeping from behind closed blinds.

Marine Iguana
Perhaps no member of the Galapagos fauna has met with as much revulsion by historic visitors as the marine iguana, Amblyrhynchus cristatus . In 1798, Captain James Colnett wrote: " The guanas are small, and of a sooty black, which, if possible, heightens their native ugliness. Indeed, so disgusting is their appearance, that no one on board could be prevailed on, to take them as food." Indeed, even Darwin himself was much replused by it, calling it "a hideous-looking creature, of a dirty black colour, stupid, and sluggish in its movements." In his diary, he noted that : "The black Lava rocks on the beach are frequented by large (2-3 ft) most disgusting clumsy Lizards. They are as black as the porous rocks over which they crawl & seek their prey from the Sea. Somebody calls them 'imps of darkness'. They assuredly well become the land they inhabit." Marine iguanas are widely distributed throughout the islands. Although the different populations vary in size and color, they are all considered to be a single species. The smallest are found on

Beginner's Guide to Pet Iguanas
Hi! I'm Steve Ford ("I'm not an expert, but I talk like one") and this is my iguana care guide for new iguana owners. It is intended to be short enough to be read at one sitting. It should get you started on the right track, but you will need to obtain more complete information as time goes on. Si prefieres leerlo en Español, vayas a http://www.geocities.com/RainForest/7031 por un buen tradución de Gastón Cassus. (MUCHAS GRASIAS Gastón.) If you're just thinking about getting an iguana, please read: http://www.geeky-boy.com/buy_ig.html (it's very short). If you're curious about what your iguana thinks about you, then you might like my iguana story . If you like that one, then you might like my second iguana story . Like it or not, I now have a third story , but this one is a true account of my iguana's recent trip to the vet. And if you still haven't had enough, you can read my iguana poem . Or you can run while you have the chance. http://www.geeky-boy.com/standard.html then please check it out now. Table of contents:

Darwin was not much impressed with the land iguana: "...they are ugly animals, of a yellowish orange beneath, and of a brownish-red colour above: from their low facial angle they have a singularly stupid appearance." The land iguanas are typically divided into two species, Conolophus subcristatus and Conolophus pallidus, although there are some data to suggest that the later is merely a local variant, a subspecies, of the former. C. subcristatus is more widespread throughout the archipelago while C. pallidus is restrected Santa Fe C. subcristatus is pretty much as Darwin described it, but since he had not visited Santa Fe he never saw C. pallidus , which is much more uniform and paler in color, and possesses a more pronounced ridge of spines. C. subcristatus once once had a much broader distribution and higher population numbers than it does today. In 1835 Darwin was impressed with their numbers, remarking that:

Some iguanas enjoy living in trees, such as the green iguanas of Central and South America. Because they are farmed for food there, these iguanas are called gallina de palo In the Animal Kingdom , males often have the brightest colors, but not among green iguanas. Here, the males are a dull green color with an orange chest, females are brighter, and the juveniles are the brightest green. A male iguana's long, erect

Anegada iguanas: buddies or siblings?
When six confiscated Anegada iguanas were given to the San Diego Zoo by authorities, it was a mixed blessing. On one hand, these six individuals were the only representatives of the critically endangered species outside of the British Virgin Islands. And if keepers at the Zoo could get them to breed, the iguanas would become the founders of a captive population, serving to safeguard against the loss of the few hundred individuals left on the Caribbean island of Anegada. But first the Zoo had to know if and how these iguanas were related. To get to the bottom of this mystery, scientists knew they would have to compare the genes of the six iguanas to those of the wild population. For determining relatedness, scientists look at parts of the genome called microsatellites. Microsatellites are strings of DNA that repeat a sequence of nucleotides (the building block of DNA). For example, one microsatellite could be AGAGAGAGAGAGAG, which could be written as AG (AG repeated 7 times). Like most animals, including humans, iguanas have two microsatellites at each locus, or point, where a microsatellite occurs: one microsatellite from each parent.

The Green Iguana
The green iguana, scientific name Iguana iguana , continues to remain one of the most popular pet lizards in this country today. Over a half million hatchling green iguanas are imported into this country every year, most of which are captive bred in El Salvador. It's easy to see the appeal of these handsome lizards. They are beautifully colored, with a stately ridge of dorsal spines and large, expressive eyes. People that like lizards but find feeding live food distasteful like that green iguanas are vegetarians. It tickles me to see iguana owners carrying a harnessed green iguana riding on the shoulder like a parrot. To me this truly signifies the attachment that an owner has to his pet iguana. Other lizard species may be somewhat high strung and unhappy about being handled, however, the green iguana often seems to really enjoy human interaction, and will often seek out human companionship for a bit of attention. Some iguanas like being scratched, some prefer gentle stroking on the head or on the dewlap, and others really seem to enjoy having dead, shed skin picked off from around the dorsal spines. (Please note that helping an iguana shed can be dangerous, as too vigorous of picking may remove or damage the live skin layer underneath the dead tissue, so this should only be carefully performed). Because the green iguana seems to often enjoy interaction with its keeper, the bond that develops is often a strong one.

House Index Pets Caring For Iguanas
Submitted by: Fantasia Contrary to popular belief, iguanas are far from the easy pet they are said to be. When considering iguanas as pets there are many things you should think about.
HOUSING:
First of all, iguanas require much more than an aquarium in the corner. They are natural climbers and need space to do just that. Aquariums are usually the first choice of any reptile owner (probably because they allow for more visibility of your friend). Should you choose an aquarium, be sure to purchase a screen top rather than the traditional closed top. A better choice would be a "basking cage". You can either purchase or build this house.
Any enclosure should be at least 3 feet tall with plenty of branches and rocks for climbing and basking. Any branch or rock you decorate his home with should be free of sharp edges and splinters.
You don't want him getting anything stuck in his scales. Although carpet looks nice on your floor, your green friend will be much happier with folded newspaper on his. Carpet holds bacteria and germs and requires frequent cleaning. By saving your old newspapers you will have an endless supply of floor coverings for him, and he will have a much more sanitary home. Using corn cob, pebbles, sand or mulch are also no-no's when it comes to his floors. You may think they are more "natural" coverings for him when in reality they are dangerous materials. Should any of these things become lodged in his mouth or under his tongue you would have a very sick creature to contend with.

Related Books and Items Recent studies indicated that the iguana iguana or known as the rainforest common green iguana is one of the few completely herbivorous (plant-eating) lizard in its natural habitat. Therefore, the information on iguana care and its food supply should be based on that aspect. It is important then, to consider physiology, environment and diet in order to keep an iguana in the picture of good health. Iguana management is dependent on the understanding of the digestive system of a pet. They are considered Hind-Gut fermenters which means the general well being is directed by the lower intestinal tract. The lower intestinal tract is responsible for vitamin production, fatty acid production, water reabsorption, etc. It is essential then that, even in juvenile iguanas, a crude fiber of 14-16% should be observed to satisfy this requirement. Older iguanas should receive a greater proportion of 16-18% in their diets. It is noteworthy to caution that many iguanas suffer for malnutrition and inappropriate management resulting in unwanted, sick or abandoned lizards. It is difficult to get an accurate guide for care since many recommendations are based on personal experience and not scientific research. So the best way to approach it is to examine the wild iguana's natural habitat and food supply.
