http://www.greenigsociety.org/handlingigs.htm
One of the most challenging aspects of iguana ownership is taming your iguana. Iguanas are not domesticated animals the way dogs and cats are – that is, they have not been bred in captivity for many years to breed out traits that are unsuitable in captivity. Iguanas still have all the instincts and behaviors that help them survive in the wild, and that means that you should expect it to take some time before your iguana becomes comfortable and tame. In addition, it is important that you continue to work with and handle your iguana in a positive way on a daily basis, or it will tend to revert back to its wild behaviors again. Iguanas that are not handled properly and with care will never tame down well, because they will associate handling with fear or discomfort. Therefore, it is important that you learn how to handle your iguana safely and comfortably.
Handling babies -
Picking them up:
When you handle your baby iguana, you should always remember that it will be much more squirmy than an adult iguana. Generally, a healthy baby green iguana is active and jumpy, although there are the few individuals who have always acted calmly.
It is important that you handle a baby iguana daily. Until you are certain that the iguana won't jump off, run away, and possibly get stuck somewhere, handle the iguana in a small iguana proof room, such as a bathroom. Wedge a towel under the door so the iguana can't squeeze under it, make sure the toilet seat is down, and if the garbage can has a plastic bag or edible things in it, place it in the vanity or put it outside the door.

Plight of the iguana: Studies of the Galapagos population show that the herbivorous reptiles shrank as much as 2.7 inches, or 20 percent of their body length. January 7, 2000
Web posted at: 1:12 p.m. EST (1812 GMT) By Environmental News Network staff Nature MESSAGE BOARD Evolution In two studies of Galapagos marine iguanas, one spanning 18 years and the other occupying eight years, scientists found that the herbivorous reptiles shrank as much as 2.7 inches, or 20 percent of their body length. "Many people working with amphibians have seen this phenomenon but have not reported it because they don't believe it, or because the thinking is that vertebrates can't shrink," said Judy Stamps, a professor of evolution and ecology at the University of California at Davis. "In 1997-98, the animals had shrunk too much to ignore," he said. "We thought this couldn't be an artifact, so we plotted out the data. It turned out to be very interesting."

Galapagos iguanas die off
Galapagos iguanas LONDON, England Sixty-two percent of the iguanas on a Galapagos island have died since an oil tanker ran aground in 2001 spilling 800,000 gallons of oil. Most of the exotic species of Santa Fe were unharmed initially, but scientists have said the spill has had unexpected consequences. The percentage of iguana deaths within a year of the accident proves that even a low-level spill can cause serious damage. Martin Wikelski, an eco-physiologist at Princeton University in New Jersey, told Reuters: "It is quite devastating. At the wrong time it could have totally wiped out this population." Most of the 800,000 gallons of oil that spewed from the tanker was dispersed by strong ocean currents, sparing the world's rarest sea creatures and birds which inhabit the islands west of Ecuador's coast in the Pacific Ocean. But by carefully monitoring the number of iguanas before and after the accident, Wikelski and his colleagues discovered that enough trace oil remained to kill more than half of the iguanas on Santa Fe.

Two dozen endangered iguanas released to wild
Feral cats, loss of habitat threaten once-flourishing species
Story Tools THE SETTLEMENT, British Virgin Islands (AP) Scientists have released 24 endangered Anegada rock iguanas into the wild, the culmination of six years of work to protect the rare reptile, scientists said. YOUR E-MAIL ALERTS Virgin Islands Caribbean Area or Create your own Manage alerts What is this? The iguanas, once a common sight on the sparsely populated British Caribbean island of Anegada, have fallen victim to a growing population of feral cats, which eat young iguanas after they hatch. Although there were once thousands of the iguanas living in Anegada, a dry, scrubby island of 15 square miles (39 square kilometers), current estimates put the wild population at fewer than 300. The Anegada rock iguana, or Cyclura pinguis, is related to other rock iguanas that live throughout the Caribbean island chain. The World Worldlife Fund lists the iguana as an endangered species. "This is a very special iguana," said Rick Hudson, biologist with the Fort Worth Zoo in Texas. "The Anegada iguana is the most primitive. All the other rock iguanas evolved from this animal. In terms of preserved evolutionary potential, this is the most important one of the whole group."

Land Iguanas: A Natural History
The males usually defend specific areas, which usually include more than one female. Male iguanas can be highly aggressive towards one another. Territorial displays involve rapid nodding of the head and, sometimes, biting and tail thrashing battles.
Land iguanas reach maternity between 8 and 15 years of age, depending on their size. They congregate and mate during specific periods, which vary from island to island. The females then migrate to suitable areas to nest. After digging a burrow about half a meter deep, the female lays 2 to 20 eggs in the nest. She then defends the covered nest site area for some time to prevent other females from nesting in the same spot.
The young iguanas hatch 85 to 110 days later and then take about a week to dig their way out of the nest. These small, speckled iguanas are a bit larger than male lava lizards. Normally if hatchlings survive the first t year of life, when food is often scarce and native predators such as hawks, egrets, herons and snakes are a danger; they can live for more than 60 years. However presently, the predation by feral cats is far worse for the young because they must survive and grow for at least 3 to 4 years before they become large enough so cats will not kill them. This is an incredible handicap against the natural success of Land Iguana populations.
Land iguanas live in the drier areas of the islands and in the morning are found basking beneath the hot equatorial sun. During the midday heat, however, they seek the deep cool shade of cactus, rocks, trees or other vegetation. To conserve their body heat at night, they sleep in burrows that they dig in the ground.

Zoonotic diseases are those that can be passed from animal to animalthus from your pets to you. Salmonella, toxoplasmosis, Lyme disease, rabies, and bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE, better known as "mad cow disease") are some of the most publicized zoonoses. Knowing that there is the possibility of becoming infected with a zoonoses is half the battle. Being smart about the steps you take to reduce the risk to you, your families, students and others youand your petscome into contact with is the other half. The articles here will help you find out what you need to know to best take care of, and make the best decisions, for your petsand humans. Please note that I am using the term pets rather than reptiles or herps for a reason: all animals, including dogs, cats, parrots, rabbits, etc., may carry one or more zoonotic organism. While the following articles were written and selected with herp keepers in mind, the precautions and concerns extend to all animals kept as pets or encountered when interacting with animals of all types in all situations.

"Building Boundaries for the Blues"
The Blue Iguana Captive Facility in the QE II Botanic Park now holds 280 critically endangered animals. It's a testament to the success of our breeding program over recent years, and to the many donors and volunteers who have made it possible for the captive facility to grow as fast as the iguana population has!
Now our rapidly expanding facility urgently needs a fence to help safeguard the animals as well as help us to manage tours of the facility. In the long term, paying visitors will help to make the Blue Iguana Recovery Program self sustaining and the fencing is critical in our efforts to achieve this goal.
Buy a foot or buy several! Contributor's names will be honored on one or more panels on the fence, in the main visitor gathering area. Get Details and other Fence Lengths Here
